Located on the 2nd floor above a bookshop, Miss Minerva’s sets the stage for afternoon tea with an old Hollywood Art Deco vibe. The menu reflects this with sandwiches and salads named for the likes of Bogart and Hepburn as well as afternoon tea options ranging from the Wonka Chocolate Tea to a classic afternoon tea and seasonal tea featuring soup and salad. We tried both the Wonka tea and the classic tea.
The Wonka tea was a winner with its range of chocolate goodies, ranging from chocolate covered strawberries to a truly excellent slice of chocolate cake (that was also featured in the classic tea) right down to a solid chocolate spoon for stirring the chocolate flavored tea (you could also opt for hot chocolate instead of the tea).
The classic tea was a bit more uneven, with the chicken salad sandwich and an unusual sweet potato sandwich featuring bacon jam and pepper jelly being quite good, while the thick sliced radish and cucumber sandwiches could do with refining of presentation (nobody really likes a thick slab of radish with the skin left on) and more flavor. Even a little extra salt would help.
There are many varieties of tea to choose from for your classic tea and they were uniformly excellent.
Service is leisurely, allowing time to relax and socialize, which is, after all, the point of afternoon tea. We never felt rushed and service was unobtrusive but professional. Our server quickly provided additional hot water for the pots and generally made us feel welcomed and well cared for.
Overall, a very pleasant experience.

This place was disappointing. I made a reservation online and had to get an approval before it confirmed the time. We showed up a couple minutes ahead of time and there were plenty of tables available. We stood at the door for 5 minutes and finally flagged the waitress. She didn’t even ask if we had a reservation and it looks like we didn’t even need one because it was empty at lunch time.
We finally get a table and order but the waitress is overly friendly the entire time. She was up in everyone’s business. She insisted that the other tables go take a photo outside and she would go take it for you. It was awkward. Well we get our afternoon tea with all the sandwiches. The chicken salad is blah, then there was a piece of bread with 3 cucumbers on it and some hummus. The sandwiches were underwhelming. The desserts were a little better with a s’mores brownie, blueberry scone, macaroon, and lemon bar. The tea was actually very good and didn’t need sugar. Every interaction with the waitress was odd and made us feel weird.
The decor was odd – like gothic and great Gadsby at the same time. The room is literally an open room. There are no signs on the outside or walking in. You have to walk through an overpriced bookstore and up the stairs. No signing at all. The bookstore employees directed us where to go. Overall, very disappointing. Two stars because the dessert was ok. But $40 for a couple bites of generic food is not worth it. There was nothing special, the food was blah, and the service was awkward.

Wanted to check it out before spending a couple hundred. Wise decision. The decor/atmosphere is Horrific! Black/Dark walls for a traditional tea house? Gross. The place (upstairs on 2nd floor) looks like cheap stuff that was picked up from a garage sale or goodwill, not a carefully curated, thoughtful & pretty decor; (image Grandma’s beautiful heirloom wedgewood china.) I’ve heard the owners are nice & that may be, but they need to realize putting their own spin on what they’re marketing as a “tea room” is a mistake. Not everyone likes your style. For me is was giving depression energy lol. Harsh but no way we’d spend tea house prices there. The owners need to hire a designer who takes a cue from other VA tea houses. I regularly go to 2 in Richmond. So much fun! Remember atmosphere is at probably 75% of a happy tea room experience.

Much too expensive for not great service/ food. Small portions for high prices.
We arrived a bit after 11am for the supposed walk in hours of 11-3pm the tea room was dark and not ready for serving.
We waited a bit and then were seated. Our server didn’t know what seasonal items they were offering. I got the chicken salad on mini croissants, came with a few grapes and piece of a pickle. It was good but, certainly not worth $15.
The dessert plate wasn’t good most things taste stale/old.
The tea selection was good and would be the only thing I would try again still fairly expensive for a not great atmosphere. We were there a few hours and no one else came in the whole time.

Warm Service, Missed Potential

I recently visited this teahouse for a special themed tea event and while the staff were absolutely wonderful—attentive, kind, and impressively accommodating when it came to my food allergies—the overall experience left a bit to be desired.

Let’s start with the positives: the service was truly top-notch. The staff made every effort to ensure I felt safe and welcome, double-checking ingredients and making thoughtful substitutions where needed. In an era where food allergies are often brushed off or misunderstood, this level of care was deeply appreciated.

Unfortunately, the ambiance didn’t match the warmth of the service. The space felt more like a generic hotel banquet room than a cozy, charming teahouse. It lacked the kind of decor and atmosphere that usually makes afternoon tea feel special or transportive.

As for the themed event, it was a nice idea in theory—but poorly executed. Aside from some creatively named menu items, there was little to no effort to carry the theme through the tea blends, presentation, or decor. It felt like a missed opportunity to create an immersive experience.

The food itself was fine, but not memorable. Compared to other coffee shops and bakeries in town, both the flavor and presentation were underwhelming. Nothing was particularly bad, but nothing stood out either—and for the price and concept, I had hoped for more.

All in all, I’d come back if I were in the area and wanted to support a place with kind-hearted, allergy-aware staff—but for a true yummy food experience, I’d recommend trying one of the more atmospheric and flavorful options elsewhere in town.

We had hoped to enjoy high tea and desserts. Sadly we did not. Recommend the owner finds another vessel or means of adding “HOT” water to the tea pots. The tea was barely warm. Even after asking for more hot water it was still barely warm. Selection of desserts was very limited. The experience was not pleasant. Sorry.

OH MY GOSH! I LOVED this tea room! I don’t even know where to begin…they made my 25th birthday feel so special. I can’t remember the last birthday where I genuinely felt special as I did today. I reached out to the tea room to have them bake my birthday cake as well, this sponge cake was great. The staff was super friendly and accommodating even when I felt like we were being super obnoxious and overly excited. Everything went flawless, the food was great, and the tea was super yummy. We had fun trying out each others tea pots. The one that stood out to me had mayfield in the name, it was super yummy. I’m just overjoyed with everything, thank you for your help making this birthday go off without a hitch! It was nice to see everyone try something new, I believe that we have converted a few of my guests to tea lovers!

We’ve been a patron of Miss Minerva’s under 3 different owners over the last 13 years. This is one of our favorite tea rooms across the United States. We were so happy the new owner ensured the business would stay open, especially with COVID when so many businesses are closing. The food continues to be wonderful. The new owner is bringing new tea choices to the menu. The tea room is also getting a refreshed look. This is a wonderful tea room with fantastic food! We appreciate the afternoon tea has more savories than sweets.

Miss Minerva’s is a delightful tea room. The atmosphere embraces you with the warmth of hospitality. The selection of teas is first rate – the offerings include woman owned small business, Serendipity and many others. The tea service is exceptional. For the holiday yea we had chicken salad, traditional cucumber sandwich, fabulous mouth watering scones with clotted cream (truly yummy). With many other scrumptious foods. There were 3 of us this time (3rd visit). Highly recommended
Also the owner pays a living wage with shared tips. Very progressive!

My friends and I went for tea on Sunday and had the best time! The tea selection is extensive, and the food selections are just right. Everything was amazing from the moment we walked in, and the staff even joined us for a few laughs. I highly recommend!
