First, the atmosphere is warm and inviting without trying too hard. Sitting behind the pub, the space feels relaxed yet thoughtfully put together, a perfect blend of casual comfort and elevated dining. It’s the kind of environment where you actually look forward to sitting down and savoring your meal.
Then there’s the food. Oh wow — the food. Everything we tried was a delightful mix of bold, fresh flavors and creative touches that highlight local ingredients in the best way possible. Each dish felt beautifully balanced — vibrant without being overwhelming, rich without feeling heavy. You can tell this isn’t mass-produced fare; it’s cooked with real care and intention.
What impressed me most was the kitchen’s ability to take familiar ingredients and make them feel exciting. From the house-made components to the imaginative pairings, every bite had that subtle “wow” factor that keeps you thinking about the meal long after you’ve finished.
The service was equally fantastic — friendly, attentive, and genuinely happy to walk you through the menu or offer suggestions without ever feeling pushy. It made the whole experience feel thoughtful and personal, like dining with friends who happen to be amazing chefs.
If you’re in Willits and looking for a meal that celebrates local flavor, creativity, and genuine hospitality, Hatake Farm Kitchen should be at the top of your list. This place doesn’t just serve excellent food — it delivers an experience that will bring you back again and again. Highly recommended.
Inari and ikura were outstanding. The salmon onigiri might honestly be the best onigiri I’ve had on this side of the Pacific. Black cod bento box was ridiculous: the cod was so incredibly tender, the array of vegetables was a work of art, and the portions generous enough for two! Also, the rice is honestly so good. I could eat that plain. We came here twice in the three days we were at Willits. Can’t wait for their eventual expansion.
Also, I get the sense that the team behind Hatake are wonderful people. Thank you Tony and Chef Ryo for the wonderful food and even preparing dishes on New Year’s Eve.
PS: my gf asked me to write this so she could compliment Chef Ryo and express to him how good his food was. She also wanted to say we only meant to get a roll before we left, but we ended up ordering another bento, an onigiri, the mendo poppers, and ikura. Hoping you read this when you’re less busy, Chef Ryo!
Of course most places serve vegetarian sushi these days but here these items are not merely a part of the menu, they encompass as much affection as the ones containing seafood. I’ve wanted to try this chef’s food for years and am delighted that I did not stumble out with the dreadful taste of let down expectations.
Most of the produce is grown by the chef, and you can surely taste it.
Sampled:
the umami miso shishitos, 9.9/10
mild shittake roll, 10/10 creamy, lightly spiced, salty, with good texture
Shiso roll, 8/10 unique, earthy, nutty, invigoratingly fresh
