The pork was good the sauce it came with was too sweet for my liking. Beans were nothing to write home about. Cole slaw was a mustard based slaw that was a first ever for me, again not to my liking. Was definitely authentic hole in the wall. I guess you must be from here to really appreciate.

Moving reviews over from Yelp and loved this place when we were there in 2017:

This was the barbecue meal we had on our long weekend in Memphis. It was nothing short of spectacular!

A few really important things up front:

1. Bring cash!
2. You’re going to carry the beautiful smell of their smoke with you for several hours – dress accordingly.
3. Don’t expect any frills – you’re there for the smoked meat.

This is a hole-in-the-wall family owned and staffed place in a sketchy neighborhood. That said, it is a place you NEED to go if you’re from out of town and on the prowl for some fine smoked meat.

Their menu is simple. How simple? About 4 items simple…chopped pork, ribs, bologna and sausage. There are some sides but unless my memory is failing me that’s it. No brisket, no burnt ends, no poultry of any kind. And that’s alright moma, yeah, that’s alright by me!

I had a miniscule bite of the ribs and found them to be flavorful, smoky and moist. They belonged to Kid 2 and she’s pretty protective of her ribs so I can’t render more of an opinion than that.

I had their chopped pork sandwich, regular size, with hot bbq sauce. The sandwich comes on a large bun that in no way manages to contain the pile of meat heaped upon it. There is a smaller pile of their mustard slaw served atop the meat as well. Yep, get a fork.

The meat was chopped pretty uniformly which made it easier to eat. I really liked the amount of bark that was mixed in and the extra sweetness and slight crunch in each of those bites. The meat itself was something to behold. Tender, juicy and moist enough to make it a pleasure to eat. The great smoky flavor permeated into the meat beyond the bark. I’m not usually one who likes my slaw on my sandwich but in this case it really worked. The vinegary zip of the yellow mustard really did bring out even more flavor from the meat, something I didn’t think possible.

Yep, this is a place you NEED to try when you’re in Memphis.

I was really disappointed with this meal. The presentation was sloppy, and honestly, the food looked more like dog food than something served to customers. The ribs were drenched in sauce with no care for appearance, the sides looked unappetizing, and overall it didn’t give the impression of a quality BBQ plate. For the price and expectations, I was hoping for something that not only tasted good but at least looked decent when served.

Drove two hours just to eat here. My favorite Memphis BBQ. That chopped pork sandwich with their amazing slaw is singularly incredible. My only question: why did it take 50 years for Payne’s to make the BBQ Hall of Fame? Belated but richly deserved.

Paynes is definitely one of the best BBQ in Memphis!
At first glance, it is a little sketch because of the building however, it is all about the culture. Once you get into the building and greeted by the employees, it resolves all second thoughts about going excellent customer service and so down to earth.
The Ribs were falling off the bone till you could eat them with a fork, but go ahead and get messy lol. I will say, the only problem I had with the sauce was the vinegar. It cured all possibilities of any future colds I had coming on. It was extremely vinegary, but nothing a slice a bread couldn’t cure.
This place is unique, cultured and overall a place to go back to if in the area.

I was told to try this place because they have some of the best Bar-B-Q. Well, I ordered a half slab for $22. It was definitely wasn’t fall off the bone ribs. It was actually crispy like fried chicken and extremely tough and chewy.

This is my favorite neighborhood barbecue restaurant when I’m at home in Memphis. The food is delish and the customer service is like family. My favorites are the BBQ Smoke Sausage and the Chopped Shoulder Sandwich. Flo and family have done a phenomenal job keeping Payne’s Legacy Alive❣️

My niece brought me here when I returned to Memphis. This was the best barbecue I ever had in my life. I can still taste it 15 yrs later. They would make a killing if they opened another shop in Vermont. Oh but it wouldn’t ever be the same . Southern pigs are feed different.

Recently visited Memphis for the first time. Leaving the airport, I was driving downtown via Lamar Ave. when I happened to pass an unimpressive BBQ joint. It was lunchtime, so I immediately turned in for the fun of it. The interior is dated and open with a few tables for inside dining, but I kind of expected that. I soon learned that Payne’s is renowned as one of the most favorite BBQ joints in the city. I ordered their most popular jumbo pork sandwich with their unique, homemade mustard-based slaw & BBQ sauce. The sandwich was loaded with freshly cooked, chopped pork. It was sloppy and with a great taste! I thoroughly enjoyed eating it. It was fun to read the framed news articles posted on the ” brag” wall. Then turn to see the owners behind the counter serving up their food. Great BBQ in a simple family environment. Stop the next time you drive by.

The rating is for the food not the building or the neighborhood. We loved the pork sandwich with the yellow coleslaw/chow chow sauce on it..it was the best thing there and would get it again..then beans were great also. The baloney sandwich was the same as the pork with the coleslaw..but not quite as good..still good though…both the sandwiches were very messy. Last of all were the ribs.. just not my style..sauce was very good..and the crispy parts were good .but the rest was fatty..I guess I like baby backs better. The people inside were very nice..don’t be scared away by the building.
