The atmosphere in the shop is always great, really love supporting this business and owner.
The Supreme Bahn Mi is a must try as well. Couldn’t recommend this spot enough. Hidden gem in Washington.
The atmosphere hits you first — clean white walls, warm wood, a space that feels as fresh as the food. Nothing cluttered. Nothing desperate for attention just food, tables and comfy whisky leather chairs. A place confident enough to let its craft speak for itself.
A Marshall Action III amplifier hums from the center counter, filling the room with the honeyed voices of Vietnamese pop stars — SOOBIN, Huỳnh Tú, Hoàng Thùy Linh — a soundtrack that drifts get your blood pumping and grooving before the caffeine even hits your veins. It warms the space in a way no playlist engineered for “vibes” ever could.
Then you notice the altar — Than Tai and Ông Địa tucked into cutouts in the wall, smiling quietly. Incense twisting through the air. Offerings of salt, water, rice, fruit… and of course, coffee. Not decoration. Not kitsch. Just a living connection to the culture that built the food you’re about to eat.
And the food — that Porky banh mi — is everything a banh mi should be.
Bread’s crust that crunches but softens immediately after. Vegetables pickled to perfection. Pork done simply and done right. The kind of sandwich that tastes like someone respected every step of the process.
The menu was a bit of a puzzle. The Z Banh Mi is pork belly, the Porky is regular pork, and unless I blinked, there’s no chicken option yet. But that’s fine. You don’t come here for endless choices. You come here for the choice they get right. There is tofu for vegans too.
Z Coffee & Banh Mi is what all cafés should be; good and honest food, made by good and honest people.
A solid five stars.
