At Blue Heron Bistro, we believe:
People who eat together, keep together.
But that sentiment runs deeper than just filling our bellies.
Each day, as we plan your meals, we make every effort to support local producers wherever possible. From sourcing our ingredients to collaborating with other local businesses, we strive to contribute and help strengthen the Lopez food economy and community at large.

Our first stop on Lopez Island didn’t disappoint. The servers were friendly & efficient. The food was outstanding! So fresh – it’s apparent that they use local ingredients. Hubby had a bistro burger with fries & I had a salmon burger with salad. The house salad dressing is one of the best dressings I’ve ever eaten. Of course we had dessert – brownie a la mode for him & mixed berry pie for me. So, so good! Highly recommend.

We had high expectations based on the reviews, but after dining there I think the review is due to limited choice of restaurants on the island as they are the only one open 7 days a week.
Good: Service was good and friendly and the restaurant has a nice view of the open field.
Bad: The fish of the day was halibut in curry sauce with rice. The fish was small and dry and all the flavoring is from the curry sauce. The biggest problem is the rice which is not cooked properly- they were dry yet lumped together without any flavor. When we got the check we were surprised it was $46! We could have gotten a way better halibut dish in Seattle with that price.
Chowder – mostly potato and again no flavor.
Fried oyster- okay but not great
It’s a cute local restaurant however the food is such a let down and we had minor stomach cramp afterward.
There is also a 3% surcharge for using credit card. In addition the pre-set tip % was higher than normal restaurants. All three options are in the 20% range which is very unpleasant.
We really would like to support local restaurants however we will not return.

Blue Heron catered my daughter’s wedding in the San Juan Islands- and they were AMAZING! The food was extraordinary- absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. All of the guests raved about the food- it was truly spectacular. They did impressive appetizers with grilled oysters, three main courses, fabulous cakes and blackberry galette- I cannot recommend Blue Heron more highly, I need more stars than 5!

Tough to leave a review for this experience. It was a few days after the 4th and clearly the staff was exhausted and I believe this is the only legit restaurant open on Tuesday. Did we have to wait for just about everything, yes. Was it worth it, overall I’d say yes. The food we ordered was very good. All the food we saw being cooked and go out looked fantastic. Is it pricey, yes. Is it worth it, again probably yes. I’d love to go back when they are fully staffed. I’d try everything on this menu.
Edit: Owner makes a fair point, it even says on the menu be ready to wait! Props to the staff here, tough job!

On a recent visit to Lopez Island, we visited the Blue Heron Bistro. Lovely, little restaurant. One of us had the halibut and chips, fabulous! Another had the the dungeness mac and cheese. This was the most amazing sauce and totally decadent!!! Our third person ordered the garden salad with chicken. This was a total disappointment. It was relaid that with the chicken it was substantial for lunch. When it arrived, barely enough lettuce or chicken. Very, very small salad. She had to come home for a sandwich as she was still hungry! This choice needs work!!!! Otherwise, it was lovely!

Get the bacon jam mac and cheese! Crab cakes and ravioli were delicious too, but that mac&cheese is worth the ferry ride alone

Stopped by the Blue Heron Bistro on Mother’s Day. They were packed, we had no reservations, , but kindly made room for us at the bar. Jessica served us and was efficient and delightful. We watched while the whole staff work together seamlessly to prepare and serve dishes that would be welcome in a white tablecloth restaurant. Lobster Benedict, shrimp po boys, crab melt, made it very hard to narrow choices to only one. Food was delicious and seafood was cooked – NOT overcooked- perfectly and plated beautifully. Add to that, one of the best bloody Mary’s I’ve had and it’s a recipe for success. Jessica, Jennifer, Ted and chef Jason made our day! We highly recommend the Blue Heron Bistro. Thank you!

This restaurant should have a five-star rating. We started with the beet salad with fresh local greens, chevre, and hazelnuts. We then moved to a creamy, delicately spiced Dungeness crab sandwich that was complimented by Granny Smith apple slices served on a tender focaccia bread. We had gin and tonic with Aloo Gin, A delicate, juniper forward spirit which I cannot recommend enough. We are very picky eaters, and I cannot stress enough how delicate and complex the flavors were with this food! We finished with a carrot cake with a half inch thick cream cheese frosting, with fresh carrot slices in the cake (likely locally sourced). If you find yourself on Lopez Island, in the heart of the San Juans, do yourself a favor and have a meal at the Blue Heron Bistro. You won’t regret it.

My wife and I celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary at The Blue Heron Bistro on Lopez Island yesterday, and it was an absolutely unforgettable evening. From the moment we walked in, the warm and attentive service made us feel like honored guests—our server was friendly, and went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect without being intrusive.
We started by sharing the creamy clam chowder, which was rich and flavorful with fresh ingredients, and the crab cakes, perfectly crispy on the outside with tender, sweet crab inside. For mains, my wife opted for the chicken Marsala, which she raved about for its tender chicken and deeply savory mushroom sauce, while I indulged in the special of the day: fresh halibut with a delightful curry sauce that balanced subtle spices with the fish’s natural freshness—it was out-of-this-world delicious!
The entire experience was so enjoyable and memorable, turning our special milestone into something truly magical. Thank you to the team at The Blue Heron Bistro for making our anniversary dinner one we’ll cherish forever. We can’t wait to return and highly recommend this gem to anyone visiting Lopez!
