Classic Dive Bar Done Right

Ms. Mae’s is everything you want in a great dive bar — no frills, no fuss, just strong drinks and a laid-back vibe. It’s cash-only, so come prepared, but the prices are more than fair and the atmosphere is unbeatable if you’re looking for something real and unpretentious.

It’s the kind of place where you can grab a cheap drink, relax, and just enjoy the scene — nothing fancy, just good times. A true New Orleans classic that keeps it simple and does it right.

I am not available regular and was treated like an outsider. The bartender came to my end of the bar, only once, and that was when I was done drinking. I had to flag her down n to get service. Don’t get me wrong, she was nice.

We had the strangest experience here last night. From the minute we walked in the bartender wanted us out. We were fired up for a local dive bar but the lady bartender wanted nothing to do with us before we said a word. Looks like it has a lot of potential for a cash only dive bar but beware of the bartender with the dog collar. She bites.

I didn’t want a drink I was walking to work and stop in to use the restroom and apparently they don’t allow you to unless you buy a drink. So I still asked for a bottle water the little white cashier karen type lady said CASH ONLY!!!! I’m pretty sure the color of my skin play a big role in being refused and treated like such. Crazy thing is been living in the neighborhood for years and this is how they treat the very same community that supports them. Smh SPEND YA MONEY SOMEWHERE ELSE. Racism has to stop at some point

I am going to be honest and first say that I have had to refrain from writing this review for almost a month now, because of how upset I feel from my horrible experience here. November 20th was the second time I had been to Ms. Mae’s. The first time I had went was uneventful although felt uncomfortable from how standoff-ish the bartender seemed to me which did not make me feel ever welcomed. The second time left me thinking of the lack of compassion and understanding humans can be.
On November 20th, I had been on my way to a physical therapy appointment when I had been hit with a suddenly intense wave of nausea. I had no choice but to pull over and rush to nearest restroom I could find which happened to be Ms. Mae’s. I was immediately carded (which is no a problem of course) and I had to keep my lips tightly shut because the nausea kept increasing and the last thing I wanted was to was to get sick publicly. I made it to the bathroom and became violently ill which no choice but to call two of my friends to come by to help me home and cancel my appointment. Unfortunately, events like this is not uncommon for me due to my diagnosis of gastroparesis (paralysis of the stomach and delayed gastric emptying). After 30 minutes, my friends had arrived and tried to get into the restroom to help me. That alerted the bartender that I believe had not been aware of the situation. She had then began banging on the door and shouting for me to come out to which I had replied that I needed a moment to, ya know, not embarrass myself further by having a stranger witness this. She then proceeded to unlock the door and aggressively enter despite my request. I sat there trying to gather myself to leave however, the bartender continuously and relentlessly proceeded to yell, shout, and berate me which only caused me to stress therefore making me feel more unwell. My friends tried to explain to her that I have a chronic gastric illness and to let them help me, but she was not having it and refused to listen. At this point, the whole bar began silent and all eyes were on me because of her harsh attitude and raising her tone higher and higher as she threatened to call the police if I did not immediately leave. It angers me how she did not listen to or try be even slightly understanding and rattled on hateful comments. I have never felt so embarrassed before and am still deeply upset about what had accrued. If she had listened or even looked at me as I attempted to show her my medical ID necklace that explained everything she could have *perhaps* realized she was acting in poorly. I strongly believe that everyone who works at this bar needs to have at least some knowledge of how to handle communicating with customers and learning how to better handle this situation rather than causing a hurtful, embarrassing, and hateful scene and threats. I don’t know if I had upset her, however I think I am justified in saying that I am definitely more upset and honestly disgusted. Like I’m sorry that I have to deal with a freaking broken stomach and was unwell???? Sorry for the inconvenience??? Sorry you don’t know how to listen??? Truly repulsive and you can bet that I will never be stepping back into this dumpster of place.

Good drinks, prices, and people.
Friends and I hang out and get food outside, play air hockey and pool, have fun.

Heather and Damien make the best food, hands down, to sate that late night food urge.
Veggie, chicken, shredded beef, fish, shrimp, pork, steak, and more.
Tacos, burritos, nachos, and quesadillas.

One day, in the past,… the “male” bartender, stopped serving me, and “IGNORED” me… when I tried to order a drink.
When I inquired about his behavior, he said that I wasn’t “TIPPING”,… while he continued to IGNORE me, and not serve me.

When I asked for a MANAGER, he took it as a THREAT,…
… told me to “LEAVE”, or he would call the POLICE, and when I didn’t leave,… until the POLICE came…
… took my PHOTO, on his phone…

Subsequently, I’ve been “BANNED”, SINCE…
– Two (2), to three (3) months ago…

“FOR NOT TIPPING, HIM…!”.
I’m on a “FIXED INCOME”, a U.S. MILITARY VETERAN,…New to New Orleans, Louisiana, and am waiting for HOUSING…(BASICALLY, HOMELESS…), with things on my mind…
…and without a “DAYTIME” PLACE, to get out of the HEAT, the WEATHER, and to gather my thoughts…

“BANNED”, … for “NOT TIPPING”,…
… without being “DRUNK”, nor “DISORDERLY”…
…”PERMANENTLY”…!!!?

DIVE BAR. Cheap drinks and neon pink lighting. Perfect hangout place to drink with friends and to make some new friends.

The place is really chill. Cash only bar. Seating available indoors and outdoors. We settled on the plastic picnic table outside. My friend started conversations with locals and another friend bummed a cig off another dude because beer and smoking apparently is his thing. Otherwise, the air outside was nice and we all just chilled and vibed there after dinner.

No southern hospitality. Cold service. Didn’t have I.D. or cash. Made to feel like a criminal. I wouldn’t go here if a had 100,000 in cash and 20 I.D.s now .
