Lots of places, actually. Hunan Bar or Mala Hotpot in Oakland, though the latter is more of a build-your-own place that serves it by the bowl.

Pretty solid mala hotpot place. I came by with my family for a weekend lunch recently and there were plenty of seats (some customers coming in and out while we were there).

For the malatang, it’s all self-serve for the ingredients, and you weigh/tell them what soup base you want at the counter. The selection of veggies is pretty large, and the meats were pretty good quality. Price point of $20/lbs (it says $1.25/oz on the wall which required some mental maths XD) is a bit high, but nothing crazy. Each of our bowls came out to be in the $15-20 range.

I think they have some credit card surcharge (like 3%? which is unfortunate.) Overall good experience and would come back.

Probably the most authentic mala tasting hotpot experience in Pittsburgh. You grab a bowl and choose all the toppings you want and pay by the pound. The portion can get pretty filling when grabbing all the things that look appealing, so pick well. Cost comes out about $22.50 per person.
The space is average, food decently quickly prepared, and the taste solid.

the food was really good, but EXPENSIVE!!! only other issue is we could not find ANYWHERE where it said “mala hotspot” outside or even on the menu, so we were unsure if we were at the correct location, but we were. the sign outside says “Love Ramen”. some clarity on the name would be very appreciated.

The food was very yummy. I like how I can choose as much or as little as I want in a bowl, and this place offers so many great and authentic options. It was my first time there, so I asked a few questions, and the lady was patient with me. When my mala hotpot was served, the bowl immediately caught my attention. It was designed around Chinese traditional theatrical elements, and I found it a cute way to learn about the culture. I will definitely visit this place again.

Total Score: 5.94

Bathroom: N/A
Didn’t use the bathroom

Customer Service: 4/5.
Not really customer service cuz it’s like more of an eat n go kinda place. However lots of self service stuff and liked how there was water readily available. I also liked the beepy thing to call you when the food was ready

Ambiance: 2/5
Very cramped and not too clean

Food: 4/5
Very good food! It was the right amount of spice for what I chosen and I was able to pick everything I loved. Had wide variety. I wish I had gotten a bowl of rice though.

Wow: -0.25/1.
Normal restaurant. However, it’s a bit overpriced and crowded

Total Score = (CS + 2*AM + 5*FOOD + WOW)/0.9

$23. Cost by weight. Always wanted to try this place since moving to Pittsburgh and finally got to try it today. I got medium spicy male tang and it was a good level of spice. Would recommend

This is a self-service Souping joint. Choose the ingredients and the soup base, weigh-and-pay. It’s a chance to have as much (or as little) proteins and/or noodles one wants.

This place has indeed lots of potential to be an outstanding Souping joint . The soup base choices are certainly flavorful. The variety of soup ingredients is commendable.

However, many of ingredients are frozen, pre-processed items. Worst amount them is spam meat, an unhealthy nitrate-preserved material that should be avoided . Then there’s what is labeled as crab, but it’s that awful FAKE surimi concoction manufactured to look like crab meat☹️☹️☹️. There’s even a processed vegetable patty (vegetables are meant to be eaten whole).

Several of the noodles are also dried factory-made very starchy material (useless calories!!!).

Why not add more fresh ingredients? Fresh slices of meats for example, and maybe be get rid of those various balls that are made fillers.

Their prices got more expensive. Now a bowl of ramen with some meat is easily $20-30! Which is way overpriced. They charge $17 per pound of raw material.

A great place for malatang, aka you pick ingredients and put in a bowl and pay by ounces and they will cook for you. The food quality and taste is 3/5. The ingredients are good, but nothing more than supermarket stuff. However, the vibe is pretty good so I will pump it up to 4/5. It is definitely very comforting, like eating a bowl of ramen.

Expensive since you have no other choices in Pittsburgh. You need to order over $20 to be full. The taste was okay though.
