Review – 2026-02-25 – Mt Ascension Gastropub
For today’s ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club adventure we tried out a new restaurant with an interesting name, “Mt Ascension Gastropub.”

Sadly, our experience began with a series of no’s. Firstly, there were no parking spots available in their minuscule parking lot, even though the restaurant wasn’t open yet.
Secondly, there was no one in the restaurant at all when we walked in. We didn’t know where to sit or where to order. I actually walked over to the attached coffee shop to see if they could shed any light on the situation.

Eventually our hostess showed up behind the counter and apologized for not being there for us when we came in. She advised us that we could just take a seat and that she would be happy to take our orders at our table. She promptly delivered our drinks, (water for Otto and Dr. Pepper for me), but sadly she didn’t provide straws, and I didn’t feel like asking for one.

Chelsea was our waitress and hostess and cashier. In fact, I had to ask her if she was also the cook because it appeared that she was the only employee working. She laughed and replied, “No, there’s a cook back there.”

We both ordered the “deluxe burger with all the trimmings” which, according to the menu included an Avalanche Ranch wagyu beef patty topped with lettuce, red onion, tomato, choice of cheese, and garlic aioli served on a brioche bun. However, she didn’t ask either of us which cheese we preferred. She also didn’t ask how we would like the burger cooked, which is a red flag. That could mean that the burgers are probably not cooked to order but are simply cooked ahead of time and thrown on the grill to warm them up.

The burgers were thin and probably hand-formed. However, mine was noticeably over-cooked. In fact, it left a charcoal flavor in my mouth. In my opinion, the difference between a good burger and a great burger is in the toppings. But even amazing toppings cannot transform a burnt burger into a good burger. To her credit, when Chelsea saw me sitting there with the bun open, analyzing the bottom of my burger, she asked if everything was ok. I mentioned that mine was overcooked and she explained that their cook was inexperienced. I believe that she would have gotten me a new burger if I had asked, but I have not found replacement burgers to be a satisfactory solution, so I said, “I’ll just eat it.” Having said that, they should never have sent that burger out for consumption. It was charred on the bottom.

The fries were nicely cooked, crispy outside and soft inside. However, even doused with ketchup, they were not to Otto’s liking and he left most of his fries on his plate.

This restaurant advertises how great the view is from their third floor terrace, but we ate on the first floor. When we had finished eating and had paid our bills,Chelsea recommended that we take the elevator to the third floor and check out the view. We did and the view is truly spectacular. It would be a fun place to hang out with friends, or to impress a date.

The Mt Ascension Gastropub has a really nice building and a fairly quiet environment with a cheerful, friendly staff, but sometimes you have to figure which items on the menu a restaurant does really well. They may have some other items that are amazing, but based on the quality of today’s burger I would have to try something else if I went back.

Beware when paying at the register. I clicked the 20% tip button on a $35.00 tab. It rang up a $13.00 tip. Which is clearly NOT 20%. Always type a custom tip when eating here. Otherwise you’ll end up tipping 33%.

They made my food and left it sitting downstairs until it was cold. Which I had to go get it. That’s odd. I had to get my own waters too. Also odd. That’s what we pay a tip for is for you to serve us the food and water. I just don’t get the set up there.

The service regarding getting me a new order was nice and very good.

Loved the live music on Thursday. Beef was amazing quality. Views were breathtaking. The inconvenience of bringing food up from the first floor was well worth the view.

I’ve been here a few times and always love the beer and food, and you can’t beat the views from the top patio. I love that I can get a black bean patty in any of the burgers/sandwiches. Favorite brewery in Helena!

I think it must be true that when you’re poor, you appreciate good food more. You know how you can spend $13 at Wendy’s for comfort food you crave on a whim? Well, if you pay $7 more at a gastropub called Mt. Ascension’s in Helena, you can actually get healthy, delicious food that sustains you for a good long while. I justified spending that money because I relied on prepared snacks and sandwiches from home the rest of my weekend trip. I had a Portobello Swiss burger with garlic aioli (which I guess is code for a flavored sauce with the consistency of mayonnaise). The burger was so juicy and tender, it made you almost want to let out a sigh of delight! I also got a house salad. The lettuce? Red-leaf, so nutrient-rich and fresh it almost looked black in color. That might sound bad, but I promise, it was appropriately light and crisp. The dressing was creamy tarragon oregano on the side. Nice. Some sprouts, too. The small grape-size tomato halves were firm, but tender and sweet. It came with tender lavender-colored onion pieces that I removed since I’m not an onion fan. But they still looked fresh. And my favorite part? The salad included candied pecans. Mmm! Now, Wendy’s is overpriced as it is. And Wendy’s recently changed their lettuce on their sandwiches from single leaves to shredded—bleh. But paying even more than their prices for a [significantly] better level/quality of food? Last night: totally worth it!

Great views but if you want food, you have to go down 4 flights of stairs and walk back to the kitchen to pick up your food. It would have been OK but the chicken Satay and the Schnitzel were,,,, literally gross. The salad and fries were good but being prompted for a 20% tip at the end for 100% self service was the kicker. I hope they get it figured out, nice atmosphere.

Awesome spot here in Helena. Love the rooftop bar, the mountain view really enhances the whole experience. Big crowds on a Friday evening in August but the service was still on point. I enjoyed the Kolsch, looking forward to trying the rest.

One of the nicest breweries I’ve visited on our current road trip through Washington, Montana and British Columbia. The roof top terrace is spectacular and the beers are tasty. Nice selection of meals for a brewery. Love the place. Live music was an added bonus.

Great people, great view, and the best beer in town! The Pay Dirt milk stout on nitro is fantastic! They have a really good food menu, including $5 appetizers during their generous happy hour.

I cannot say enough about this new Helena brewery! The beer and food are outstanding! The view…. no words! You can see the entire westside of town! They have a space upstairs and downstairs… it’s huge. The wings are SO GOOD! Staff are friendly and welcoming. Kid friendly and best part…. it’s just a stones throw from my house! You must try their burger and wings… TO DIE FOR!
