We wanted good Mexican food today so headed to Taco Central in Ansonia. When we arrived the open sign was off and the doors were locked. Bummer, as drove 20 minutes in terrible winter weather. I happened to notice the sign Retro next door. On a whim, I googled it. Great reviews. We decided to give them a try. Oh my goodness, the 4.9 out of 5 didn’t lie. Out of 5, we give them a 7. Super cute, uber clean was our initial impression. Emily was behind the bar and quickly welcomed us in. We were their first customers as it had just opened. We told her about Taco Central being closed, no idea why and that this was our first time in. She was so friendly and explained pretty much everything about Retro, from it being family owned and run to what makes it special with recommendations and customer favorites. Her Dad is the owner, Gary and we quickly met him. He shared some history of the area, his background and really made us feel special, but what is special is the crazy delicious pizza we enjoyed. Probably the best pie we have had in the NE. Which is saying a lot. It’s New Haven style pizza at its absolute finest. The dough, the crust, the San Marzano sauce (to die for), coupled with the cheese, and toppings. We built our own. Sausage (which he makes himself), black olives, mushrooms, hot oil, jalapeños omg!!!! The pie was so delicious. A tip, when your pizza comes out, let it sit a minute or two before grabbing a slice to let it jive together. They offer oregano, red pepper flakes, and Parmesan cheese to add. It’s not needed but was so appreciated. They have apx 3 TVs to catch a game as well as tables. The ambiance is casual, retro and fun. Great date night, family friendly and welcoming. There truly wasn’t one thing missing. Plus, they offer great wine choices in six or nine ounce pours at reasonable prices. But unlike so many restaurants, they have lovely long stemmed wine glasses. ❤️ Great selection of beer, including local craft beers on tap and full bar. Go with complete confidence. I don’t know if they have parking behind the restaurant as we parked directly in front street side.

My family and I were in the area on Saturday night and decided to stop in for pizza! We heard great things since they opened, and our expectations were definitely met. Delicious thin and crispy New Haven style pizza without being overly charred. There were so many speciality pizzas to choose from and I can’t wait to come back and try more! All of them were delicious, though if I had one critique, the cheese pizza was a bit greasier than I typically prefer – but it was still great! We loved the mandarin salad too. Super attentive service, and the pizzas came out quickly. They currently serve only 12 inch pies, but maybe once they’re open a bit longer they’ll offer larges. We will definitely be back and wish them the best of luck as they’re still under 2 months old!

Very good pizza. Crispy thin crust and delicious red sauce. The pickle pizza was also the best we’ve had, the pickles were diced which made a huge difference.

Great little place with some fun and well made drinks. For starters we had the pretzel sticks with beer cheese and I highly suggest not skipping them . The pizza was very good , we had the meatball Parm , it had a thin crust and a tasty sauce. Just a bit bigger then a usual personal sized pizza. We had spicy margaritas that were perfectly made by a great bartender. They also have a good amount of drinks on tap including a peach mango cider that was delicious made by down east. Highly suggest stopping in if your in the area.

the food was great ! my sister and i got the nachos to share and we loved them !, the sauce on the nachos was really good. we each got our own pizzas and the pizza was amazing ! cheese to pepperoni and bacon ratio was great :)). the atmosphere was great and lively, all different types of ages in there which i loved ! and of course our server marissa was so nice and attentive. it’s a little out of the way for me but i will 100% be back !

I absolutely had a great time at Retro this past weekend. The food was delicious. The drinks were great and my server Camille was fantastic, energetic, and super attentive to detail. I was however slightly discouraged after seeing a couple incidents between the bartender who seemed to be maybe a shift lead or manager of sorts with the staff working, one including my server as I witnessed her yell at my server in front of a table a couple away from me in front of her guests. The table next to mine even gave me a glare as we were so confused what was happening since we were all seeming to having a great time and everything seemed to be coming out right, drinks were given in a timely manner, and our server was checking in frequently. The hostility and barking given by that staff member towards the other staff made myself and others quite uncomfortable.Regardless of this interaction, I will still be giving this place 5 stars because the food was delicious, the service at my table was fantastic, and I had a great time with my family.

Retro Bar and Char has been a fantastic addition to downtown Ansonia. The atmosphere is laid back and everyone feels like a friend. We’ve been there quite a few times already and the mashed potato pizza has become our favorite. Camille has been our server each time and her fun personality and attention to our every need will make us come back again and again!! Would highly recommend Retro to anyone looking for a fun night, great service and a delicious meal!

Leaving this review while currently eating here for the first time. My husband and I ordered 3 pies. Buffalo chicken, chicken bacon ranch, and mashed potato. Amazing. I have no other words other than amazing. Just what the Valley needed. The perfect cross between New Haven style and colony. Well done. We’ll be back.
