The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming—exactly what you want when pairing great pizza with a solid beer selection. Everything about the experience felt intentional, from the food to the vibe, and it’s clear the people behind it care about doing things right.
If you’re looking for excellent brick-fired pizza in a laid-back setting with great beer, The Box at the Rex is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be back.
I was meeting a friend here who bought me a pizza after I said, “chef’s choice” since it was my first time here and I had no idea what they were about. I got there and already had said pizza at the bar waiting for me. As with everything new to me, I didn’t know what to expect, but the smells radiating off it were something to behold. Turns out the surprise pizza was the Burn It Down pizza with pepperonis, sliced jalapeños, and sliced sausage. That first bite felt like the world slowed down for a second as my taste buds caught up with everything. To describe it in one word: Perfect. Perfect amount of spice, perfect crunch from a high temp bake, perfect little bits of char on the pepperonis and browning on the cheese, and perfect smokiness of the sausage they use. Me and my friend nearly ate the whole thing over a few drinks, which were a refreshing variety of local beers, wines, and classic crowd favorites.
There was a blackberry beer that I chose after taking a few samples of their draft selections and it contrasted nicely with the pizza choice. It was pretty fruity, a little sweet, but a definite short lister. Don’t worry about the color, you will be fine.
After I was a few slices in, the head chef, David, came by and asked how everything was. His energy matched very well with Rachel and I could tell there was an excellent team running this place. Even in this first meeting, I could tell he pours over the details and works to perfect his craft every chance he gets. He thanked me for the kind words and asked everyone else at the bar how things were. From the single interaction with everyone here, I can already tell I’ll be back soon.
The atmosphere was very relaxed, but also very tight-knit. I could tell they catered a lot to the armed forces, with a nod to the Air Force with the neon F-18 on the wall. I’ll definitely be back. Maybe with friends, maybe by myself, but I found a new place to hang out that night. Here’s to next time.
The Rex was already a great place to hang with some buddies, or the family, and have a few beers. Adding a pizza kitchen has definitely made this spot even better!
