Social Profile:

Amster’s Prospect Tavern is named for Sol Amster, the founder of the Tavern and grandfather of the current owner. The Amster building was built in 1926 and operated as a grocery store until Prohibition was repealed in 1933. It is one of the oldest establishments in Bergen County and the greater New Jersey area. Referred to by many different names in the community, “Amster’s”, “Sadie’s”, “Norm’s”, or just “The Tavern”, is a place where patrons always feel at home. In 2001, The Patio was built and has since become one of the most popular outdoor dining facilities around. Please join us for lunch, dinner, or just for a drink… you’re always welcome at Amster’s!

Really love Amsters! Great local favorite. Daily specials, always Fresh and Delicious . The friendliest staff ! Great ambiance with dining thats open to the patio, or upbeat bar with booth seating.
Highly recommend….

I’ve passed by this place so many times and assumed it was just some little dive bar. It’s a cozy bar with a handful of tables with great drinks, great food and GREAT service. We were there on a Sunday night. I wish I had asked the waitress her name because she was wonderful- special service, happy and smiling. Perfect burger, Caesar salad, potato skins. Casual and comfortable.

So badly want to love this place. I want there to be a place that rivals Nellie’s.
Better wait staff. Better bartenders. Great beer. Amazing atmosphere.
But the weekday food, disgusting. Got a burger that was red all over. Bar pies was clearly a frozen pie reheated. And no desserts other than ice cream. I know the weekend chef is supposed to be amazing, but they’re better off not serving food during the week if this is what it’s going to be like.
What a bummer.

We loved the old place but also the new management. Very good Moscow mules and the appetizers were delicious, though they had run out of the cauliflower. The waitress was charming and attentive and there was a great piano player who played Sinatra-style greats and Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” unobtrusively while we ate. The outdoor courtyard is perfect this time of year.

Use to be a place of great food and excellent value. In the last few months the portions have become minuscule with missing items like the two onion rings with your burger. Even the pickle is almost invisible .You get charged for a cheese burger even if you order a plain burger. A glass of wine is a tiny measured amount not even close to the generous portion of just a few months ago. Prices have had a large percentage increase. The food is not even close to “Norm’s” – the previous owners standard.

Sparkling clean, under the new owners. 1/2 price appetizers and 1/2 price drinks during happy hour (4-6). Reasonable prices and interesting specials that we look forward to trying soon. Trivia on Thursdays and live music on other days. What a refreshing change from another local place that is also under new ownership. We will make Amster’s our new hangout! Shout out to bartender Brian, great service, and keeps the bar fun.

Skip!!! Very disappointed with the quality of food, portion size and very expensive for a dive bar. Was excited to try this place again after hearing they had made some upgrades. Was confused when entering seeing the bar was exactly the same dive bar it was a few years ago when I was there last. Way overpriced for it still being a dive bar with a dining room tucked in the back and misses the mark in terms of trying to “upscale”. The food was not good and portions were minimal for the price of $15-$18 and dipping sauces were left off. I would equate it to airport food.

Lived in Waldwick 50 years and didn’t know the restaurant existed. Have twice in the past week with different members of my family. Everything we have had has been excellent. People are very friendly and portions are generous. Appetizers, soups, sandwiches, and desserts have all been great. Loved the orange cream soda. Intend to visit often.
