Became a huge fan of Tacos El Gordo after trying it in Las Vegas, so seeing those iconic red trays still gives me a little thrill. I finally tried the tripa here—something I couldn’t find in Vegas—and it was incredibly good.

I also ordered the Vampiro Adobada since it had great reviews, and honestly… I might just stick to this from now on. It was that memorable. We were originally heading to the main location, but rain led us to this spot instead. No regrets—plenty of parking and the indoor seating made it a comfortable stop.

While visiting San Diego for the first time, I went to Tacos El Gordo on a recommendation, and so glad I did. It ended up being the best tacos of my life. That’s saying a lot, as I am always on the hunt for great tacos. I ate at seven different taco places on this one trip, and none of the other restaurants even came close to the flavor at Tacos El Gordo. The Adobada tacos were so incredibly flavorful, I couldn’t believe it. Every bite was so satisfying. And the carne asada had a nice, strong charcoal-grilled flavor that I couldn’t get enough of. All the meat choices are served in lots of different style options. The tacos and mulas were the best, but I also enjoyed the vampiros. Both their red and green sauce was fantastic. It was all so delicious, I ended up eating here twice.

The tacos here were absolutely fantastic. The staff was very pleasant and welcoming, and they took the time to help explain all the different cuts of meat they offer, which I really appreciated.
Honestly, every meat we tried was great—but the adobada completely stole the show. Hands down the best. They also have excellent hot sauce, perfectly grilled onions and peppers, and then there are the Mulas de Adobada… oh my gosh. The cheese alone is unreal. I can’t even properly describe it—you just have to try it.
Easily the best tacos I’ve had in San Diego. If you’re even thinking about going, do it. You won’t regret it.

Craziness! Asada tacos were good but that was the only line we could get in. Depending on what you want to order dictates what line you get in. So if you want different items, you must move about the various lines creating very very long waits and cold food. Not the best dining experience. While this one taco was good, we would not visit this location again.

Originally went to Tacos El G thinking it was El Gordo…what a mistake that was. This place is absolutely amazing! I got tacos, my partner got carne asada fries. My tacos were bomb, so much flavor, a little wet but idc bc it tastes soooo good. I didn’t give 5 stars cuz my partners carne asada fries were smokey tasting. Wasn’t my or her thing. Comparing to another carne asada fries I’ve ever had. Kinda like beef jerky smokey. Anyways just stick to the tacos and all good! I’ll be back!

Fair prices and great food. Our go-to spot for carne asada and adobada tacos, the other options didn’t really stand out to us.

No self-serve sauces anymore, ask cashier for it. If you want fries, you have to order and pay for them first, then come back to pick them up.

Lines are very long, and the ordering system can be confusing, especially with 1st time customer.

The Tacos here are excellent!! It’s a must have when you come to San Diego
Just be patient, the different lines can get confusing and are very long. Parking can also get crowded and packed. But you won’t leave disappointed.

Always love the quick, friendly service and great food. I usually get the cabeza and lengua tacos but everything is good. They have people dedicated to keeping the place clean so you never have to worry about a dirty table.

We’ve tried several Mexican food during our trip to California and Tacos El Gordo was one of the best, they don’t skimp on the ingredients. We arrived at 5:00 pm on a weekday and it was packed. Ordering was easy and efficient because they had separate lines for the different types of food and everything was labelled clearly. We will definitely visit this place again.

Excellent tacos with all the different type of meat to choose from. Beef tongue melts in the mouth, steak is smoky and flavorful. The fries with choice of meat is also very tasty. Lining up for each type of taco needs to detailed analysis of which ones go on which line, just like in a street market 🙂 It is also very reasonably priced. There’s also a sink near the cashier for washing hands without going to the bathroom. Very convenient.
