Me and my boyfriend’s, first time here and I have to say… please give this place a try if ever in the cedar rapids area. My boyfriend had the two meat platter with brisket, ribs, fried rice and waffle fries. I had the fritio pie loaded fries. The ribs, rice and fries were fantastic, on my boyfriend plate. The loaded frito pie was good…. i will just omit the sweet beans future order. But please give them a try.

Went out with a group a friends during the week and we all were impressed. Everyone ordered something different ( just worked out that way) and everyone said they’d definitely come back.

The ribs were very meaty, moist, and filling. The Frito appetizer was amazing. A great variety of sandwiches for everyone to choose from and the bigger dinner portions also provided a great variety and good-sized portions. There’s also chicken strips, a variety of side dishes to choose from, and a kid’s menu. Don’t let the words BBQ scare you away – pulled pork or brisket is on the menu and you get to add, as much sauce as you want to your food ( or don’t want) when the food arrives at the table to those items.

You’ll find it very clean and bright with their open atmosphere. Plenty of tables ( high and low) and the option to push a few tables together to make a longer table, if need be. There is a bar, with beer on tap, a selection of hard alcohol, and some canned alcoholic drinks. On the menu, they do have some specialty mixed drinks. Coke products are served.

Plenty of televisions on the wall but they’re not loud, so you can talk with the individuals at your table. They are very handicap accessible (parking, entrance, tables, restrooms). Parking is right outside their door. They do seem to do a lot of carryout business.

If you haven’t checked them out, you really should. Great BBQ for dine in or carryout.

Our waitress Sandy was quick to greet us. I had the Frito Pie with Brisket and Pulled pork per Sandy’s suggestion. My dad and husband had the brisket slamwhich with mac & cheese and beans. Everything came out quickly and the flavor was great. We were pretty full but I couldn’t leave without trying the banana pudding (which my husband said was better than my own, and I’m a southern gal)
This is a great family owned Texas-Trained BBQ place and I love that they repurposed the old bowling alley wood to make the tabletops!

The brisket at least had a smoke ring but where’s the flavor? Portions were small for the price. BBQ sauce was bland.

When a places prices out 3 bone ribs for one price then double that amount you only get 5 pieces for double the price the math doesn’t add up. Pork and beans mildly sweet nothing really stood out.

Pulled pork lacked in flavor.

Just being honest but it was a one and done for me.
When I go for BBQ I want bold flavors.

When you open the front door to the building you walk in and look around then you step in further and on the other side of the upright cooler there is a sign. Going into building I did not realize it was a multi use building. I had only heard about this place.

Brisket was great, wife likes her smash burger. The waffle fries are good, need more salt, and skip the Mac and Cheese. The ranch has bite and is thick and the Tangy is amazing and I don’t like mustard but I enjoyed this sauce. The sweet is very mild. Good food overall, will be going back.

And I weighed the brisket and they gave me a little more than I paid for so I was happy they are honest.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Fantastic First Visit!
From the moment I walked in, the service was warm and welcoming. The food arrived beautifully plated and tasted just as incredible as it looked. Every dish was flavorful and thoughtfully prepared. The entire experience—from ambiance to service—was top-notch. I’ll definitely be returning!

Great service and good food. Nice restaurant with nice decoration. They have a bar with four or five TVs but it’s more restaurant than bar. The tacos were good but I didn’t realize they were that small.

Backyard is the best TX-style BBQ in Eastern Iowa. The brisket is the only one that I’ve had locally that doesn’t just taste like roast beef (and the fattier the better). Their ribs and pulled pork are great as well. The tacos come with this fantastic salsa and their BBQ sauces are perfection. Hoping they’ll expand the menu into smoked turkey or chicken, but this is our go to spot for sure!

This is my first swing at Backyard and received what I expected. I was very excited knowing I had some high level BBQ on the way (Door Dash). Ordered some brisket & only (3) ribs which was more than enough. Waffle fries & Cole slaw. I thoroughly enjoyed it even after getting it trucked over. For a single meal price it is more than reasonable and if gluttony is your game then go for it.

We stopped by when in the area and loved this place! It’s been open less than a week. We tried brisket burgers, ribs and shredded pork. All of it was delish. That was one for the best burgers I have had in years! We will definitely go back when in town.
