This restaurant is phenomenal and I wish every restaurant had the quality of food that’s coming out of the kitchen at Southern! I love the fact that they fry in beef tallow and according to their menu are trying to become seed oil free. Not only do you get amazing food with complex flavors but you have the joy of supporting local farmers and a local restaurant. When we leave Southern we’re always thinking we can’t wait to go back. Lila was an exceptional server tonight and we enjoyed everything about our dining experience. I’d love to see a Southern weekend brunch because man, I know they’d do it so well! If you want absolutely amazing food that you can feel good about eating, that’s truly nourishing your body while pleasing your palate, then don’t delay, visit Southern, a gathering place.

I’d been wanting to come here for a while now. I chose it for my birthday and was impressed! I enjoyed the shrimp & scallop grits and my boyfriend got the pork chop which was out of this world. Can’t wait to go back!

As outlandish as it may sound, restaurants and chefs like those at Southerns exemplify why we cherish freedom and the spirit of a civilized society. The artistry and passion evident in every dish are truly remarkable. My scallop and grits dish was a masterclass in both flavor and texture. Each component—the bite of the scallop, the creamy grits, and the bacon—blended seamlessly into a single, harmonious bite bursting with flavor.

I have traveled the world and dined at Michelin-starred establishments, yet Southerns is only the second restaurant where I felt compelled to personally thank the chef for an unforgettable meal. Chef Ashley, who is also one of the owners, should be immensely proud of the extraordinary cuisine she creates for her guests. Truly exceptional.

Her son was also our waiter and did a fantastic job explaining the meals and food!

This was our first time here and we were extremely happy with our choice. We were quickly shown to our table, and our first impressions were very positive. The decor and the ambience were lovely. Our server was prompt, and explained the menu and the farm-to-table process, etc. The menu changes daily and there were loads of great choices.

The food was excellent, possibly the best cooked piece of fish (Golden Tile) I have ever had. Presentation was good, the pineapple salsa and potatoes were a great accompaniment. I also had a cup of the butternut squash soup which was delicious.

It’s a cozy space, so make sure you have reservations. This is not fast food and it’s not inexpensive – but trust me, it’s worth it! A menu that changes daily, with ingredients that you will not see elsewhere, cooked to perfection, means high running costs.

A great place for a romantic dinner, or a party of four. I would not bring children or go with a large group.

Oh, and I have to mention the restrooms (always my indicator of the cleanliness and quality of a restaurant overall). They were a 10 out of 10 and that is the first time I’ve ever given that rating. Well done!

We will definitely be back.

I rarely post a review. I’m from Charleston, SC, known as a foodie place. Awesome restaurants! However, I visited Southport….and I gotta tell ya…the food here and the menu are outf’ing standing! I have to say, Ashley is an awesome chef…and our waitress Shea was awesome and knowledgeable. Now how in the world can I get them to come to Charleston?!!!
Thank you for an incredible meal and experience!!!!

We ate here for the first time last night and we absolutely loved it! The food was incredible. We had scallops and grits, chicken and pimento grits, and pork chop with sweet potatoes. Everything was 10/10! The grits were so creamy and the scallops chicken and pork chop were seasoned perfectly and were fork tender. We had bourbon bread pudding with butter ice cream and it was the perfect dessert! The service was impeccable! Yes it’s pricey but worth it! We can’t wait to go back.

Absolutely blown away by our dining experience at Southern in Southport, North Carolina. This was hands down our favorite restaurant in town — and for good reason.

From the moment we stepped through the door, the atmosphere was inviting and full of energy. The decor struck a perfect balance between Southern charm and modern warmth, making us feel instantly welcome. We were fortunate to meet Chef Ashley during our visit, and her vibrant energy and passion for hospitality radiated throughout the restaurant. You could tell she’s created something special here.

As for the food — absolutely phenomenal. I ordered the grouper, which was expertly prepared with fresh, bold flavors that highlighted the quality of the fish without overpowering it. My wife had the filet mignon, and it was cooked to perfection, melt-in-your-mouth tender and beautifully seasoned. We shared the mac & cheese as a side, and I have to say, it was easily some of the best we’ve ever had — creamy, rich, and deeply comforting.

Just when we thought the meal couldn’t get any better, we finished with two unforgettable desserts: the key lime pie and the peach cobbler. The pie was tart, smooth, and refreshing, while the cobbler was warm, perfectly sweet, and full of Southern soul. Both were exceptional.

The service throughout was top-tier. Attentive without being overbearing, genuinely friendly, and clearly proud to be part of such a great establishment.

Everything about Southern — from the food and atmosphere to the people behind it — made us feel like we were part of something truly special. If you’re in Southport, this is a must-visit. We’re already dreaming of our next meal there.

We had a tremendous dinner date Friday night. We were seated in the outside patio area, which was very nice. Starting with a bottle of wine and the crab dip was a very good beginning. I had the bone in pork chop, while my girlfriend had the blackened shrimp. Both meals were very delicious. The presentation was also very good. Although a little pricey, we enjoyed the entire experience and will look to return on special occasions.

WAY overpriced for what you get. I understand they use good ingredients but their is a point when it gets ridiculous. We bought a $20 appetizer that was literally two THIN and SMALL lunch meat size ham slices with basic cornbread which was burnt on the bottom. The ham slice was pretty good but that was not worth the price. They had an over priced sweet apple bourbon drink that was also like $20 and tasted like it had zero alcohol. I’ve been to nice restaurants that make expensive drinks but they are pretty strong and worth it. This drink was basically juices. They also dont give you any bread or salad with your meal which is crazy when you spend insane money at their restaurant to eat and drink. They also have no kids menu and charged us $48 for a child’s portion of only a filet with mashed potatoes! An adult size was only like $10 more! In my opinion this place is not worth the money.
