Woods Valley just lost our business for life. The last couple of winters we have enjoyed lunch at the picnic tables in the bar area on a Saturday afternoon with our two young kids. There are always other kids in there with their families, it’s never super busy and the kids gather around in the big carpeted central area and dance to the band. The Tap Room, is a bar/restaurant area in a FAMILY ski resort, with NO DOORS separating it from the rest of the eating area, and a sign that says minors are allowed in the company of an adult. Today, it was -5 degrees outside, a very slow day at the lodge, and we came to enjoy what we knew would be a mediocre lunch that cost 80 dollars so that our two young children could dance a little bit to the live music (which is stationed IN the Tap Room, inaccessible to the rest of the dining floor) and get out some of their winter energy. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve done this without issue. Other kids (and their parents too) were dancing with us and that has always been the case. The other patrons are always laughing and smiling, and the band is always vocal about loving the kids dancing too. However, Tyler the manager came over today and essentially kicked us out, saying it’s “an adults only space” and they can’t have kids running around. One of the older girls (not ours) had done a cartwheel which I believe is what triggered him to make his rounds, ruining his own business. But, an adult parent had done a cartwheel before her and the band had suggested people get up and dance or cartwheel – that is how chill and empty it was in there. As a parent (an 8 months pregnant mother, by the way) I am so disgusted by this. We are very on top of our children when we’re out in public. We would never allow raucous or inappropriate behavior or allow them into an adult space with any questionable adult behavior either. Everyone in this room was smiling, and enjoying APPROPRIATE lighthearted dancing at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon. Shame on you Woods Valley.

Furthermore, having worked in the service industry for a long time, I have a few GLARINGLY OBVIOUS recommendations: maybe if you don’t want children dancing to the live band in the Tap Room during broad daylight, install some DOORS to the space? Perhaps on a Saturday afternoon while the sun is still shining have the first band play in the MAIN DINING AREA given that children enjoy music too, not just adults? And finally, on a slow, -5 degree Saturday in the middle of a brutal winter, maybe be thankful for the business you have instead of being a stickler for a non existent rule you made to keep the big empty room “for adults.” We are just absolutely disgusted and will be sharing these sentiments with everyone we know locally and who vacations to ski at the lodge. Unfortunately Tyler didn’t stick around to explain to my 4 year old who is now in tears, why she isn’t allowed to dance to the band at Woods Valley anymore – she said she thinks “he must have a small heart like the Grinch.”
