Full disclosure – I’m not Kosher, nor am I Jewish, so this was a lunch choice based more on convenience/location than anything specific to the food offerings. One of the attorneys in my office (who is Kosher) did speak highly of this place for what it’s worth, and I was intrigued by the classy looking menu I grabbed from them during a lunchtime constitutional. Very impressive, and a legit, albeit premature, selling point. There are a lot of Chinese restaurants in this area, and most of them are indistinguishable from one another, right down to the giant paper menu. This one does set itself apart in that regard, at least.
Despite the menu (which honestly suggests more of a sit-down experience), Kapao’s interior DOES look like every other Chinese establishment, except the proprietors are Jewish, not Asian. I ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken lunch special (about $14). It was okay, though not great, and for the price should be a lot better. This is literally almost twice as much as you’d pay for this specific dish at any other nearby Chinese takeout place, and it’s not twice as good – that’s the bottom line. The presentation factor (similar to the menu) IS above average, so I suspect that’s part of what you’re paying for. Instead of the traditional oyster pail, you’re getting the rice and chicken in a fancier, microwave-friendly container. Other selling points are that the sweet and sour sauce is on the thicker side, which is my preference, and it’s a strong, standalone flavor, almost to the point where it overwhelms the senses and crowds out the chicken. I also liked the rice, which was softer (I guess technically overcooked?) and easier to consume from my perspective. Unfortunately, the chicken is very mediocre. It’s completely tasteless – and that’s where the strong sweet and sour sauce is sort of a gift and a curse – and was almost stringy and too chewy in terms of its consistency. A solid portion of it was also overly fried, so almost every piece had a small bite that was just inedible skin.
If the price point was competitive, this might actually be a tepid endorsement, especially since the supporting characters are a bit above average. In terms of quality it’s not that far off from its nearby competitors, though honestly that’s not a particularly high bar to surpass. But you’re just not getting your money’s worth here unless you place an inflated importance on the to-go containers. My search for a viable lunchtime Chinese option continues.
