Recently visited The Madrigal for the first time yesterday and it was a really positive experience. It’s located at 100 Van Ness and is easily accessible via Muni. It’s an art deco style bar with two levels. Though, this is mostly a bar, they have a nice size food menu as well. I highly recommend the garlic bread and cheeseburger with fries. The drink menu is diverse and it’s a great spot to visit for a night out with friends or date night. They also have a few themed nights, one being Halloween night with “ghosts, ghouls, and scary flavored drinks.”

I think the service and atmosphere are top notch. The food is super solid and the reverse happy hour is such a unique idea. Unfortunately, all the cocktails I’ve had here have just been way too sweet for my taste. If you prefer your cocktails on the sweeter side, then you’ll find this place perfect!

Updating for an October 2024 visit:

Continue to love what the Madrigal is offering, especially seasonally themed cocktails and Happy Hour offerings. My friend enjoyed a lamb ragu-type dish, and I had four delicious arianciata. However, the beet hummus is overloaded with salt IMHO. Dial it down by half, and I’d have been happy, but I am sensitive to salt.

Previous visit:

The lobster dog was tender & full of lobster flavor, and the delicate fried calamari sprinkled in the bun added just a suggestion of crunch. Sweet heat came from minced peppers that gave the roll a chow-chow like element, and the bonito flakes were A++ for texture. Each bite savored!

The $10 Happy Hour Zorak was a simple + elegant happy hour holiday cocktail with vodka, mint, cacao, cream, and a sprinkle of pie spices. And cute bruléed marshmallows to evoke s’mores.

Love that this place stays open late and I look forward to return trips.

chic looking cocktail bar on market with knowledgeable staff serving inventive cocktails. the drinks looked great on paper but sad to say they mostly missed the mark and were unbalanced. the ambiance was also lacking with interior felt a little dated, but overall still enjoyed time here with some friends.

forbidden city: spirit forward, pretty unique. enjoyed the rice cracker

clone canyon: too tart, skip

It’s a great place to go and relax after work. The food is amazing and the drinks are fantastic. I’m a sober drinker, and there are 3 non alcohol beverages. I had the Chanson, which was really good.

A really great spot for dinner or drinks before the show. Their cocktails and small plates are really good! Would recommend the garlic bread and onion rings. The honey butter provided with the garlic bread is out of this world.

The mains were pretty good as well, rich in flavor, but couldn’t fully stack up to the truly outstanding starters we had.

If I were to come back, I think I’d opt for the late night Happy Hour (9 – close) as getting all my favorite items for a discount would be dope!

This place just climbed up the charts for me for the best cocktail places in SF. We tried almost every cocktail on their menu, and barring maybe 2, I liked each one of them. My favorite though were dance of danjuro, hell’s atlas, beauty sleep and the palm reader. Palm reader has that unique kashmiri pepper spice taste to it. If you can’t handle spicy drinks, maybe stay away from this one. Pliny’s potion and persimmon prevails were good, but since I am not so much into rum and rye, they were a bit too strong for me. Screen test was surprisingly good. I do not like the taste of  coconut in my cocktails, but they have managed to keep its flavor subtle with basil and other ingredients making up for a perfect blend. The food is amazing. Their beef tartare is not the conventional types, but their rendition is one of the best I’ve had. Its creamy and cheesy, with bursting flavors of oyster cream and the traditional capers and onions. They have transformed something as prosaic as mozzarella bites into a mouthful of deliciousness. The outside coating is thin and crispy, with a generous amount of soft cheese inside. We added the white sturgeon caviar, and it was totally worth it. We also tried their maitake mushroom grilled cheese, which again had their special touch to it. We went here before heading out for dinner elsewhere, and honestly, I enjoyed Madrigal food more than the other place. Street parking might be an issue here as it’s located on busy Van Ness Street,  but there are a few nearby garages if you don’t mind a bit of a walk. This place can get crowded on weekends and after show bar goers, so I suggest making a reservation. The bar seatings are open but it can get a bit tight at the bar. The ambiance is elegant, not too noisy. I will definitely be going back for more cocktails and dinners. I wish they add more main course dishes to their menu. They clearly have nailed the flavors. A definite 5/5 for me.

The Madrigal is more of a bar with food than a restaurant with a bar, but the food that is on offer is mighty tasty. Their speciality drinks are delicious and creative. Their standard drinks (I had a Sazerac) fill the bill. The Madrigal, like so many restaurants/bars is mighty loud. As the music gets louder, the people get louder to talk over it, which is a drag. Still the food was quite good and imaginative. My friend and I had the Caesar Salad (not pictured) which was light and fresh, the Patatas Bravas which I would have again, the Duck Smash Burger which was amazing and the onion rings. Also not pictured is the only dessert they have – warm madeleine cookies with chocolate, vanilla and butterscotch sauce. May I say – OH MY GOD – this was so good! I wish the acoustics were better in the restaurant, but I would return for a good drink and quick delicious bite.

Went in to grab a quick bite to go, the bartender was very friendly and took my order which was the chicken sliders. When I got back to my room I bit into the first one and the chicken was raw on the inside. After that I pretty much lost my appetite.
