I seated myself at the bar and was politely greeted by Cassandra. The service and atmosphere rating is NO reflection on her. She delightfully introduced me to the specials and at my request recommended the Pan Seared Pork Chop which was amazing. I also ordered the “wedge” salad.
When I asked Cassandra specifically, to “confirm” it was the wedge, (as the menu describes but this was loose leaf), Kevin, in the background, abruptly spoke over her and proclaimed, “It’s our version of a wedge!” It was truly a spectacular salad regardless.
While enjoying my salad I was entertained with Kevin’s hubris with other patrons before he approached me and stated he would refill my water whilst in the middle of a forkful of salad. I was unable to reply to him, he demanded an answer, to which I nodded affirmatively, as that was my only recourse. Water refill should not be a question and especially not a demand.
Kevin boasted to other patrons he’s “been doing this for years” but Cassandra, 12-total months on the job was the epitome of service. I had no expectations to be treated like royalty, but the last thing I was expecting was to be treated like Kevin’s guest with his gratuitous attitude.
Side note: The burrata is the best I’ve had. It tastes so fresh and light, and I love the pesto it comes with.
Back to the point: I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every bite I’ve had here from the apps (escargot, octopus, fried green tomatoes, mussel special, etc.) to the entrees (pasta, duck, fish like the tuna special this time, etc.) to the desserts. My family fought over the wagyu bolognese pasta like a pack of hungry animals.
Thank you to The Oar for the fabulous food, lovely staff, and wonderful dining experiences that you give to the community!
I was back at The Oar tonight with a friend. 2/27/26
Both of us have used The Union Square Cafe in Manhattan as our bench mark for the best pork chop. Other restaurants have come close, but tonight the chef at The Oar presented us with the most tender and flavorful pork chop. The entire composition was truly extraordinary. The pork chop was nestled in a sweet potato puree and accompanied by perfectly prepared asparagus. Edged along the side of the plate was a sensational sauce which must be part of Chef Christopher’s signature. Once again, The Oar is deserving of a 5 star notation. Other seemingly gourmet restaurants are not even in the running to this gem.
Was very happy with atmosphere and host who seated us was very friendly and outgoing making our visit stat our very positive. But unfortunately thats where the positives for us ended
Our waiter’s performance was poor – first he was very low energy and couldn’t seem less interested when explaining the specials and while taking our drink n food orders – which after he did we never saw him again til we asked for the check – he never asked if we wanted another drink and never came back to ask how our meal was
Which is Probably a good thing because I definitely would have complained about my meal – I ordered the boar sausage Wellington – the menu promised house made pate and mushroom duxelle sautéed spinach and red wine sauce – sounds great right? but what I received was 3 small pieces of very bland underseasoned steamed sausage wrapped in a partially cooked puffed pastry( the pastry was partially raw inside). Also I’m Not sure if they ran out of the duxelle and the pate or someone forgot to put it in the Wellington but it was not present on the dish – also the spinach was way over cooked and the wine sauce was not reduced at all and was very thin and under seasoned -all a definite miss
However, my dinner partner had the wagyu sirloin and said her meal was good except for the very over cooked soggy spinach. I did hear people at the table next to ours saying how good their meal was so I decided to give dessert a try hoping it would redeem the meal for me. I ordered the lemon fritters with blueberry ice cream. The fritters were good although lacked any lemon flavor and the ice cream was over churned and icy – not creamy like ice cream should be and the blueberries in the ice cream were completely frozen making the ice cream very hard to eat and tasting only of ice.
I was very disappointed with the meal and service on this day – maybe they just had a bad night or whoever was preparing the meals wasn’t the chef who created the menu.
I never write these reviews but decided to in this case because I really feel this restaurant has some definite potential as I found the menu very creative – but in our experience on 2/14/26 the meal just didn’t deliver what the menu promised.
Sorry folks…. honestly I intend these comments to be helpful and not hurtful – Good luck to you
