Ambience & Service- Loved the barn-style decor and cozy vibe. Andrew was friendly, attentive, and accommodating especially with my vegetarian request and even making an off-menu espresso martini.
Food: Ordered Salsa and guacamole were great, though some chips were overly salty.
Tacos were the highlight cauliflower, mushroom, and fried avocado were perfectly balanced and packed with flavor. Others at the table loved the pork belly, jerk shrimp, and chicken options. My husband loved the coconut sauce on jerk chicken and mentioned he felt he was having something out of a Thai food menu. Glazed pork belly was cooked to the perfection and loved the flavor. Our friends in the table ordered chicken Chorizo and mentioned they will be visiting again to try more. I am looking forward to coming here during warmer weather and trying out more food.
Dessert- Tres leches had a noticeable cinnamon flavor, not my favorite, but not a dealbreaker.
Overall Great food, warm atmosphere, and excellent service. Easy to locate.
So many details in their decor, and in general. Upon arrival right at 4pm at their opening time, we were kindly greeted at the host stand after passing by a beautiful fire out front. We chose to sit upstairs and were given the cutest little nook of a booth right by the servers station. Absolutely blown away by their standards, by even covering the waters with plastic wrap while waiting for its table. Service was excellent, she explained in detail how the salsas worked as well as how many tacos usually are enough for a meal by the server as well as drink reccomendations. However, not realizing I am a blogger she did wonderful, but the food was sub par. We ordered the salsas with an added guacamole, we didn’t really have a favorite of any of them, chips were a cute round shape but extremely salty. If I had to pick a favorite it would be the classic salsa. Street corn was ice cold, pretty display however, and the tacos.. cold…took one bite of the steak and had to put it down, too mushy and soft of a texture as well as cold, like it was just marinating in a food prep bin.The consistency was just awful in my opinion as well as the shrimp being almost to a raw consistency. The fish and chicken tacos were both ok. I was so excited to finally get here to be disappointed, and not having a desire to come back. After all the hype, I was hoping to be blown away. Thank you for your attention to cleanliness, detail as well as a great server.
Also the best, most original cocktails you’ve experienced.
UPDATE:
We came back here two days later because it was so good! I’m still going to give it five stars and a value rating of ten. This visit, we again sat at the bar and we were lucky enough to be served by Natalie, the hardest working bartender in town who was able to singlehandedly keep up with the deluge of customers flooding into one of the best restaurant in the area. Tonights highlight was definitely the Guacamole and Chips, mostly because the chips they are serving are HOUSE MADE and are the best and most unusual corn chips I’ve ever had, and the guacamole was super fresh. The cocktails here are original and unique. I’m ready to move in here and make it my new home!
Food quality / price (value) rating 10. The atmosphere is rustic contemporary. This restaurant is located in the walkable and historic Sandy Hook village located in Newtown, Connecticut, an area experiencing a renaissance of improvements to buildings from the turn of 1the 19th century, and becoming a restaurant haven with at least seven high quality restaurants within a two block area. Tacobarn is extraordinarily unique for its fantastic and original cocktail menu and high quality tapas style tacos and unusual appetizers, entrees and desserts. I had three different cocktails which is very unusual for me, because they were all so very original and can’t be found anywhere else. The first was the ‘Petal to the Metal” (see the cocktail menu photo for description) that included cayenne pepper salt on the rim, an incredible innovation that I’ve never seen anywhere else. The second cocktail was the “Spicy Gardener”, a fresh, cool, cilantro and cucumber creation with a paper thin 8″ slice of cucumber as a garnish. Excellent! The third was the “Smoked Sanguine”, another fantastic and unique offering. All lime juice used is freshly squeezed! For food I had three “Carne Asada” tacos, very flavorful hangar steak morsels with red salsa and pickled onion that was probably the best taquitos I’ve ever eaten. The wife had the ‘Sesame Tuna Bowl” which was super flavorful and also unique. We sat at the bar, where our very experienced, attentive, knowledgeable and talented mixologist, Bekim made our experience memorable. The owner, Chef Adam Greenberg (a four time award winner on the show “Chopped”) has created a wonderful gastro experience that you cannot find elsewhere. The building is a beautifully restored early 1800’s barn that was remodeled so wonderfully that it appears to be brand new. They have a beautiful outdoor seating area with a gas fire pit. We visited on the second day they were open, and things were operating more smoothly than I would have expected especially considering it is almost impossible to staff restaurants in our area. I would recommend this place whole heartedly, and would classify it as a ‘rare gem”. Our bill was 20% less than we anticipated . I can’t wait to come back!
The tacos were incredibly flavorful with a good amount of spice. We will definitely be back!
