Went with my daughter and it was a fantastic lunch! The chili is was amazing and not like any chili I’ve ever had before. The fresh salad, the greens, the pickled veggies along with the in house made vinaigrette was delightful. The beef tallow chips and chicken salad sandwich was also incredible! Perfect lunch on such a beautiful day! Thank you and we will be back!

Amazing spot! I visited the farmers market with my wife during the holidays and the Pastrami at their booth is excellent. The guy running it, Dean, was super friendly and let me know he had a restaurant inside. We visited some days later and he was there with some girl with dyed hair. They both were super nice and the guy told me all about how it’s made. I don’t do much cooking, but it sounds like they do a lot! Definitely ask for the pastrami moist, that’s the only way to have it.

Food court with several different options. The Howdy child smokehouse I got the chopped brisket. I got a small sandwich to try it out and fries a little pricey, but not more or less than the other places the fries were good and the sandwich it’s OK. not a lot of space if it’s crowded we had to share a table which was fine we actually made a couple of friends . But it was a little awkward anytime I needed to get up that I had to squeeze through people the decor on the inside was nice..

I had the Smoked Turkey Avocado sandwich and it was genuinely one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. So so delicious. I had a tea to drink with it that was perfect. The woman who served me was very kind and was great to chat with. Highly recommend!

I got the half Reuben. I am a reuben snob. I also hate sour kraut. I have to be 100% honest…. this sandwich was epic and I even loved the house made purple kraut. The pastrami was also house made and was super tender and juicy. Stop by to find out why!

Your take is no improvement on the Reuben sandwich. I don’t know what you are trying to do here but it’s not working. If you’re going to call it a Reuben, the flavor profile you are after certainly has a range but is overall, pretty simple. It is supposed to be a little bit tangy, a little bit sweet and a fair bit savory. Unfortunately, traditionally, it is also often a little bit wet.
This sandwich exceeded by not being wet and the herb/Parmesan toasted bread was perfect but those are the only good things I have to say about it.
The Kraut was not at all tangy, the sauce was not at all sweet and the brisket not savory. And none of them was special. The brisket was missing its traditional flavor components of coriander, allspice, mustard and black pepper. Ultimately the sauce, kraut and brisket combined were missing most everything that binds food to pleasure.
The guy putting together the sandwich did a perfectly fine job. This shortcoming of a sandwich goes up the ladder some number of rungs. I expected more from an eatery serving in the Pearl district. I expected more for $19. I expected recognizable flavor or at least creative courage in pursuit of innovative flavor. Neither of those were present here when at least one of them should have been.
The American tastebud has certainly been winnowed down over recent decades to something akin to an emoji where once a meaningful paragraph existed. I only had to see IPA’s (a failed British attempt to create a proper Ale in the stinky hot environs of India) sweep perfectly fine beers off store shelves two decades ago to know that eventually I would meet this sandwich.
Taking advantage of people’s ignorant tastebuds and careless approach to discretionary spending just because you can is a business model worth abandoning.
Just fix the sandwich. It wasn’t actually broken before you decided to fiddle with it. It’s a simple kit of parts that you have swapped out with exotic ill-suited elitist alternatives. So it no longer runs right and ultimately breaks down before it gets to where the name says it was going. It took me as far as the corner of Disappointment & Regret. And then I had to walk the rest of the way home.
I don’t live in San Antonio and so I won’t ever get that late evening meal back. It was a bit like being mugged of a good experience. And I did what I’ve always been told, I handed over my wallet; so no one was seriously injured. But should I return to San Antonio I doubt I’ll walk through that neighborhood again.

The Historic Pearl’s Food Hall at Bottling, otherwise known as the Bottling Department Food Hall, which includes Howdy Child Smokehouse & Delicatessen, is an excellent space to grab a bite + take a break from the Texas heat as you are exploring the Pearl! 🙂 The space is really beautifully curated, and there is lots of seating!! Pearl’s Food Hall, generally, is very clean & well-kept, making it all the more inviting.
My first visit to Howdy Child occurred on a Monday afternoon (during a holiday) with my boyfriend, and we had no trouble getting a table after placing our food order. Their vegetarian sandwich, the Avocado Veg, is absolutely fantastic!! It’s so delicious + extremely flavorful. I’m really looking forward to returning here in the future!

Came here on a Wednesday around 5pm, got their pastrami reuban. We could instantly tell the bread and pastrami were high quality. Great sandwich, would go again.

The rueben was delicious! Texas smoked pastrami is the best mix of Texas Brisket and traditional Pastrami. The Beef fat fried chips were also awesome!
