This is my Enchanted Cathedral of Culinary Delight!

There are restaurants you like, restaurants you love, and then there’s the rare place that becomes a personal landmark — a place that holds time for you.
That’s Ron of Japan for me.

I’ve been coming here since I was a kid — literally elementary school — and it still has the same magic. That’s what blows my mind: decades later, it doesn’t feel like nostalgia. It feels like the real thing. The moment you sit at the teppanyaki table, the room shifts. The lights, the atmosphere, the traditional decor overhead, the steel in front of you — it’s not just dinner. It’s a ceremony.

And I’ll be honest: I’m not someone who spends a lot of time cooking. But that’s exactly why this hits me so hard. Because here you get a front-row seat to mastery. Watching a chef who truly knows their craft — timing, heat, rhythm, restraint — is like watching a practiced martial art. That’s the best comparison I can make: it reminds me of why I love sumo. The discipline, the tradition, the calm presence… the way something can be powerful without being chaotic. The fire isn’t just a trick — it’s a byproduct of complete control.

And then the best part: the food absolutely backs it up. Everything comes out hot, fresh, perfectly timed, and you feel that rare thing you don’t get everywhere anymore — care. Real hospitality. Real pride.

Ron of Japan doesn’t feel like “a meal out.” It feels like being transported — like you stepped into an experience that’s been refined over years and still respects the craft. I’ve loved this place my whole life, and I’ll keep coming back as long as it exists.

11/10. A forever favorite.

I have so much to say about this place and I’ll be completely honest the atmosphere was really nice it felt like as if you were walking inside of a Japanese museum or something and the staff were really nice especially our chef Gerald. He was really nice and we had a lot of fun chatting with him while he was making our food. The food though, was subpar. The chicken noodle soup was okay but the salad was not that good because they put too much dressing and I wasn’t a fan of the creamy texture of it. The food though was okay but the fact that they cook right in front of you is an amazing experience. I’ve been to similar places like Rokbonki in Arlington Heights and even though the atmosphere isn’t as fancy, the food there is so much better.

Ron of Japan’s in Northbrook is back!!!

From the service from the waitress to the chef to the busser, everything was delicious. Alex, the chef was outstanding! The drinks were phenomenal pours, delicious Manhattans, some of the best I’ve ever had! Everything was wonderful!

What a great experience. Dare I say better than hibachi . Went for Christmas dinner, I did not want to cook so we went out. That may be the move from now on, Ron of Japan for Christmas dinner. I Will definitely be going back and I highly recommend .

Located in what looks to be an office building, walking into the restaurant definitely has time travel to 70s or 80s vibe. This place might have been a novelty place to visit several decades ago, but what they offer today is outrageously high price points for food that is unnecessarily prepared in front of you. After a 30-minute wait upon ordering, one cook came to the table to cook a 9-person meal one at a time, which stretched the dinner to 3-hour ordeal. This meal could have been done in an hour if they had simply prepared it in the kitchen.

Meat and fish were fresh but rice was undercooked and had no flavor. And providing large volume of rice and vegetables does not justify the high cost of each item. Lastly, dousing ingredients in soy sauce doesn’t make it Japanese cuisine. There is a whole lot this place needs to change to update its practices.

Let me start with a quote from the Prophet- me. “Oh Ron of Japan, my stainless-steel flame,
Where onions erupt and chefs know my name. Your spatulas clatter, the shrimp take to flight, and suddenly dinner becomes pure delight. The sizzle, the flip, the choo-choo of rice, the egg roll of fire? Impeccably nice. I’d cross all of Northbrook, traffic be damned, for fried rice so buttery it understands.” So tasty. A delicious night to remember. Get the Mai Tais and 12 oz prime steak. You will not regret it ❤️

I’m not sure why this place has such bad reviews, Ron of Japan has been consistently good for many years and the food is delicious. I went for my birthday and got the Shogun special with filet mignon and lobster, which is a multi-course meal. Everything we had a seasoned and cooked to perfection, and of course, you have to try the Egg sauce on your food and you can always ask for extra. I’d also recommend getting the beef fried rice instead of the white rice with your meal. Yes, it’s expensive to have premium food that’s cooked in front of you, and you may have to sit with others that you don’t know, but this meal is worthwhile.

Just ate here for the first time in years, took the grandkids thinking it would be a special treat, and I must say I was horribly disappointed. The place is old and tired looking from the minute you walk in. There is a koi pond off to one side but it’s empty of water and fish and the entry to the restaurant is drab and dreary. The rest of the restaurant is not bad because the red fencing is festive and culturally different The staff at the front desk seemed miserable and not at all happy to greet customers as if it’s quite a chore and they wish they were anywhere else but there. The wait staff was nice but we did have to ask to clear our first course soup bowls. Our chef could hardly speak English and seemed tired and miserable. The wine selections were mediocre at best but at least for $13/glass they gave a good pour. The food was simply not very good. Relatively flavorless and not of good quality. But it was edible and, so far, no one in our party has gotten sick. It’s a shame that this restaurant no longer offers a window into a different world and I do not recommend it… even as entertainment for the grandkids

OMG, I am a hibachi connoisseur, I’ve been to them all over the US cause I am a regional flight attendant. The atmosphere there is absolutely amazing and the staff was great. But I’ve never been so disappointed in hibachi food in my entire life. The golden shrimp was oily as heck. After the appetizer, I asked the chef to dump the oil off my plate. The fillet was the worst steak I’ve had in my entire life. I love the atmosphere. I would never go back there again. Very disappointed. ❣️

First time in and this place is so cute! They did an excellent job decorating to make it feel more authentic. Our chef was nice but seemed very young… he tried to make small talk with us but we were surprised when he brought up some pretty controversial subjects. The soup and salad were just okay, soup didn’t have great flavor and salad was a little watery. The beef fried rice was excellent and the meat was all cooked pretty well. I don’t like how they piled all the food together on one little plate and how they cooked the veggies first, it would have been nice to eat them with the rest of the meal. The chef was very quick with everything, it wasn’t a show like I thought it would be at Benihana, it was more like quick cook all your food and then leave. My favorite part was the ice cream. The green tea ice cream was excellent!! The other staff who grabbed water and boxed up the leftovers, they were all very nice. Overall I don’t think the price matched the experience. It’s okay to have inflated prices if the quality matches but unfortunately I don’t feel the quality was high enough for the price. If you have money to burn then for sure I would recommend checking out but I can’t say I would recommend this place to those on a budget.
