Yummy food perfectly seasoned. I absolutely loved the onion soup & the ancient grains salad. The pie they had today (it changes) was pork & cider and was hot, filling, & flavorful. Our server was friendly and attentive as well as the owner & chef. Felt like I’d known them for years. When we come back to Black Mountain we will definitely be back. I love the fireplace & all the games available for fun if you want to do that.

I had the veal stew and my daughter had the fish and chips. Everything was divine! We also had the trout mousse as an appetizer and pumpernickel bread.

I think this may be the best fish and chips I’ve ever had and I ate every bite of the stew. Tons of gravy and delicious flavor!

Hung out here for a good while a few Saturdays ago. Good beer with a trend towards British brands. Food was excellent and served in huge quantities. The fish and chips were so large that none of our party could finish them. Excellent, friendly service. Over all a really good find and a little different than most of what Black Mountain has to offer. It’s also a little out of the way, so tends to he less crowded.

Enjoyed an amazing birthday dinner at Cheshire Arms this evening, and it was absolutely perfect. From the crackling fireplace to the friendly waitress (Angela ) to the authentic fish & chips & bangers and mash…just wow! They have really captured the cozy elevated British pub fare in Black Mountain. Can’t wait to go back!

Heard about the Fish & Chips for a couple of months now but schedule finally allowed me to try them out for myself . . . y’all . . . IT. LIVES. UP. TO. THE. HYPE!!!
Sweet yummy deliciousness that gave literal waves of chills, it was so perfectly cooked!! Their tarter sauce, divine!! The portion sizes are HUGE!! While I wanted to eat the whole thing, I was good & stopped halfway . . . granted, I did finish the chips – but you better believe I ordered a side of chips take away to go with the rest of my fish!!
And the reason for stopping halfway, was to try their dessert – today’s choice: a Scottish Cranachan . . . aka delicious summer berries cooked with whisky to almost bursting (as the Scottish do), folded into thick heavenly whipped cream & topped with oat crumble. There was definitely a (few) moments of silence taken for the chill inducing enjoyment of this perfect ending to a superb lunch!!
Heather provided exceptional service & I’m pretty sure I just made a new friend that speaks my foodie love language. The only unfortunate thing about this experience is that this place is dangerously close to my house & now that I know how excellent this place is . . . I’m going to want to come here all the time!! (I’m not angry about it but will need to plan accordingly )
My British/Scottish taste buds have found their happy place & you better believe I’ll be back (with many friends)!!

Our first time…we had early reservations on a chilly Sat night just before our annual trek to the Arboretum for the Christmas lights display. We sat fireside, with a glass of deep red cabernet…which was positively divine. We began with their onion soup. Served piping hot… the flavors were so fresh and rich. Absolutely fantastic! For our main course, we had the Fish and Chips and the Pie of the Day, which happened to be a Shepard’s Pie. The fish was a huge portion of sweet haddock, fried to perfection, with a nice light breading. The chips (fries) were some of the best we’ve ever had locally. The Shepards pie, made with well seasoned, extremely tender lamb & veal and topped with mashed potatoes , was honestly just inhaled. Every bite a warm explosion of flavor.
If you haven’t been to this charming little gem yet…we highly recommend it! Wonderful, relaxed atmosphere…and excellent, fresh food at fair prices.

Nestled in the charming town of Black Mountain, The Cheshire Arms offers an unforgettable dining experience. From the moment you step in, the warm and inviting atmosphere sets the stage for an exceptional meal. The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the onion soup. Rich, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned, it was a culinary delight that left us craving more. The chef’s mastery in the kitchen is evident, and it’s no surprise that they’ll soon need to chase people away with a stick to keep up with the demand!

The menu boasts a diverse selection of dishes, all crafted with the freshest ingredients. Each plate is a work of art, showcasing not only the chef’s skills but also a deep appreciation for fine food. The service is top-notch, with attentive staff who go above and beyond to ensure a memorable dining experience.

The Cheshire Arms is a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy fantastic food in a cozy, welcoming environment. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this place is worth every bite. Don’t miss out on the onion soup; it’s simply amazing!

We went to Cheshire Arms for the first time today and it was an absolutely lovely experience, we will certainly be going back. Everything we got was a perfect 10/10. I got the pie of the day which was a Fisherman’s Pie served with mashed potatoes on top like a Shepherd’s pie with salmon as the main protein in the filling. My dad got the fish and chips which had a nice light batter. I got a drink which was very balanced and comforting and the dessert was light and delicious without being heavy and too rich. This is the kind of food that is worth the price point as you can see the increased quality shine through for the extra you are paying. I love that it’s family owned and it definitely feels like a spot that caters to all guests, but doesn’t forget about locals and only caters to the tourist market.

Black Mountain has a lot of good food, but The Cheshire Arms is one of the places that consistently delivers. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, and the staff is friendly and attentive without hovering. You feel welcomed right away, and service moves at a good pace.
The food is well done across the menu. The fish and chips really stood out. The batter was crisp, the fish was flaky, and it was not greasy at all. Beyond that, there is a good mix of hearty pub-style dishes and lighter options, so it works whether you want something filling or just a solid meal without overthinking it. The kids menu is simple and well done, with options like fish and chips or bangers and mash that feel like real meals, not an afterthought.
I find dining at the bar just as enjoyable as sharing a larger table with friends. Overall, it is a consistently good place to eat with great service, good food, and an easygoing vibe. Definitely worth stopping into if you are in Black Mountain.
