Zoot! Some places feed you. Others nourish something less easily named — that part of the soul that craves beauty, surprise, and the particular alchemy that occurs when food, setting, and serendipity converge.
Chez Marie on Shelter Island is such a place.
It announces itself not with pretension but with quiet confidence, the kind earned through decades of understanding what truly matters. The beauty here isn’t merely decorative — it’s structural, woven into the weathered elegance of the space, the way light falls across white tablecloths, the sense that you’ve stumbled into someone’s exceedingly well-curated dream.
And then there’s the food. The shrimp arrive as small revelations. The Caesar salad — that perpetually bastardized classic — is executed with such integrity it reminds you why it became a classic in the first place. The salmon, perfectly yielding, needs no apologia. The wine list reveals a curator’s hand rather than a comptroller’s spreadsheet.
But what elevates Chez Marie from excellent to unforgettable is its capacity for the unexpected. On our visit, Steve Nieve — Elvis Costello’s longtime collaborator and formidable talent in his own right — simply materialized and began to perform. Not as spectacle, but as gift. These moments can’t be manufactured or scheduled. They emerge from the particular atmosphere Marie has cultivated: a place where art, hospitality, and genuine human connection aren’t competing interests but complementary forces.
One leaves Chez Marie not merely satisfied but renewed — reminded that dining, at its best, remains one of our most civilized and profound pleasures. A place to return to. Repeatedly.

We had the most incredible meal at Chez Marie last night — the grilled caesar, pate, and shrimp were hits across the table, and the chicken milanese is not to be missed! Jay made us feel very welcome, and we can’t wait to go back on our next visit to Shelter Island

The grilled Cesar was very good as was the homemade country pâté. My husband didn’t care for his filet mignon- he felt it did not have a lot of flavor and had a strange sauce; not a traditional peppercorn. My chicken Milanese was flavorless. The Apple tarte for desert with vanilla ice cream was delicious.

Another success by Marie! My husband and I visit Shelter Island a couple of times a year, and there is a reason why Marie’s food and her charm has a grip on the island. The restaurant is small and cozy, food is fresh and delicious. When you go try the shrimp rolls and the burger. The French fries are…. Well, French!

First time on the island. Was greeted by Jason as if I was a favorite cousin. Ambiance was perfect. My salmon was perfect with a really great light sauce. My significant other had the chicken Milanese which was a great portion and unbelievably tasty. Will definitely be back. Maybe tomorrow.

Rushed over here late night shortly before closing on a recommendation of the B&B owner across the street and it did not disappoint! Note to these with allergies: a lot of the menu is gluten free and marked as such. Vegan/veggie options also. Everything is fresh so they were out of some of the items by the time I got there, but I prefer my restaurants that way. Delicious, friendly + knowledgeable service, and the softly lit ambiance was lovely with soothing background music that was a perfect way to unwind at the end of a very long travel day.

The best restaurant that I’ve eaten in in 2025 so far! From the service to the decor to the food, everything was perfection. Jason, one of the owners treated us like family members. I will make a special trip to Shelter Island just to eat there again soon.
