This place is literally and figuratively a “hole-in-the-wall” gem of a restaurant.

First, let me set the scene.

It’s 7am, my mom and I just got off the plane and we really want some soup. Almost every place we wanted to go was closed as it was still early. When I looked up “soup” on Google maps, El Granito de Oro was open and super close. So we went.

Initially, we weren’t sure they were open because when we walked in, we didn’t see anyone. But I could hear a constant “pat, pat” sound coming from the kitchen. Low and behold, a lady was in the back, making fresh, handmade tortillas! She didn’t even have the handpress some of my friends’ moms used. Nope! She was doing it all by hand.

We initially had trouble ordering due to the language barrier, but we were able to order 2 soups: chicken and beef (short rib).

Both soups came with 2 tortillas. The chicken came on the side rather than in the soup. We thoroughly enjoyed this breakfast. While it wasn’t anything fancy, the portions were large and it was delicious. Just like you would expect at grandma’s house.

Went in for tortillas which were made fresh and were good but feel like it was way over priced. Definitely a language barrier. There was a deal posted in the window for tortillas but was charged way more but not sure if it was because they were large flour tortillas that we got. $$$$$ will be looking for another place to get fresh tortillas.

i paid my food and before that the lady called Gloria Mejia. She told me before i paid that i didn’t give a tip and i gave her $2 in cash. i come home to look at my receipt and she forced a tip of $20.23 dollars without my consent. i would give 0 stars but i cannot. I Also put No tip, and she took out $20.23 dollars without my consent.

Place is not clean.
Food Is terrible never again
Pupusa was burned
They put the repollo and sauce inside of the containers?? They need to learn what condensation is and how it makes the pupusa soggy.

Worst xorn tamale no flavor and watery.

Worst place in northern va so far.

Nice cute shop. Very fair prices. Pupusas revueltas are good but mine were just a bit overcooked.

First time customer and will be going back for sure. Someone mentioned this spot during Easter Sunday, and was excited to try them out. Ordered pupusas, I was pleasantly surprised and will be a repeat customer for sure. Great find delicious authentic El Salvador food. I am not from El Salvador but enjoy their cuisine.

As a first time customer, I preordered and showed up to pick my order. I ordered the cheese and bean/cheese pupusas. They were a good size for the price. I like a little char on them but not burned with a little cheese falling out, delish.

If you are looking for perfect round pupusas that are more corn than filling this is not your place. You are better off going down the street to Anita’s, where there’s no flavor.

The lady here cooks all by hand. I also ordered the empanadas de platano and they were larger than what I have been getting at other restaurants. I got two steak tacos to try my luck and didnt get any salsa to go with it so I used the pupusas salsa. Thus the 4/5 star review.
I will be returning and looking forward to trying new dishes.

Ate here for the first time today—food was amazing! We got a breakfast plate, one of the fruit drinks, and a bunch of tacos. Super fresh, flavorful, and the sauces with the tacos were nice and spicy! All the portions were generous, the staff were very friendly and helpful, and prices great too. We will definitely be coming here regularly!

It’s the badest food I’ve ever tasted, I’ve gotten some pupusas in that place and unfortunately they brought about 4 hairs of person, it wasn’t the best experience in that place because of the bad food, the filling of the pupusas was horrible.
