Checked out The Whale’s Tail for their monthly comedy open mic night, and it did not disappoint! It’s free to attend, draws a solid crowd, and the vibe is relaxed and fun, perfect for a casual night out downtown.

Let’s start with the drinks. Their original espresso martini is fantastic. Easily one of the best in town: smooth, well-balanced, and you can actually taste the espresso instead of just sweetness or vodka. Highly recommend it.

For food, the seafood chowder was a standout, rich, creamy, and full of flavor. Honestly, it beats out versions I’ve had at several other Anchorage spots. The pulled pork fries were also a hit . Super hearty, definitely enough to share between two people. The only downside was running into a few big chunks of pork fat, which made some bites less appealing.

Service-wise, things were just okay. If you’re seated at the bar, you’ll get quick attention, but if you’re at a table, expect a bit of a wait for refills or your check. Not terrible, but something to keep in mind if it’s a busy night.

All in all, The Whale’s Tail is a great downtown hangout, awesome drinks, top-notch chowder, fun crowd, and the comedy night is a bonus. I’ll definitely be back!

Great place but the downstairs bathrooms have always smelled like sewer for years! I think they have a problem with their septic down there. Also the carpet in this place smells like cheese it probably needs to be deep cleaned. Another thing is that when you call it always says they’re closed when they really aren’t and they do not check their Facebook or Instagram page messages. Their promotions and notices to the public could be better. We showed up all dressed up for a night of dancing once and it was closed for a private party but they did not put any notices on their website or any of their social media. I really love this place but I’m hoping someone in management with the power to make these changes sees this.

This place is decorated beautifully. We were late getting into the hotel from the airport and they let us put in an order for food right as they were closing, we were very grateful. The food was delicious and the service was superb.

The Banh Mi doesn’t look like a banh mi but luckily it was yummy. Substitute the fries for a big bowl of house salad which should be a healthier choice. Service was fine and we were also served tap water with ice. I’ll come back to try their own menu in the future.

The staff is exceptional! Ali is so personable and his staff is top notch! Every one of his team (Will, Hannah, Alice, Jasmine, and Ron) provide excellent customer service and go out of their way to cater to individual needs!

Please do not order the lemonade, it tasted terrible. Not sure if it an issue with the machine. Please do better with the chicken tenders, and the fish and chips. The fries were way too salty. Also the fried cauliflower appetizer was way too greasy. Restaurant space was beautiful, and clean. But the food could be way better.

This restaurant was highly rated but was a big disappointment. The restaurant had one bartender/waitress for the whole place. Ally did an amazing job. Also the food was disappointing. The teriyaki salmon special was good, but the seared halibut was so overcooked it was not eatable. I do not recommend it.

Seared halibut entree was very good. Cauliflower shareable was unique and yummy. Our server was excellent. Live music was waaayyy too loud.

A great bar to have drinks with friends. Plenty of tables and bar stools. The music is very loud, so you’ll need to yell above the music at times. The drinks and food are good. If you’re staying at the Captain Cook Hotel then Whale’s Tail is a great choice instead of going out in the cold.

This is a fun place to meet up with friends to chat, have a bite, and enjoy some music. The appetizers are great and the cocktails are made well! Plus they have the amazing wine dispenser to pay by the glass for variety.
