This place is really good for certain things. Be careful what you order, like most restaurants in Lynchburg. They do some things really well and other things not so much.
The diet menu… Listen if you want beautifully steamed vegetables and some really nice protein order off that menu! Try the white sauce, that’s my personal favorite. The tofu is beautifully steamed, firm and delicious, and I cannot stress enough that this is the only Chinese restaurant in Lynchburg that does not overcook their vegetables. The broccoli is actually green when it gets to you, not a grey brown. I lost a fair amount of weight eating their diet menu a couple of times a week. Not joking.
Also some of their dishes like their chicken and broccoli and beef and broccoli are top notch, just order light sauce. This is a trick that I have learned eating American Chinese food. Typically they smother the dish in so much sauce that it overcooks everything in it and gets slimy. The light sauce trick eliminates that. Also they use really nice chicken; white meat, sliced thin, cooked quickly so it’s still actually tender. That’s an accomplishment for most restaurants not just Chinese ones.
I also really enjoy their chow mei fun. Their lo mein is not greasy, another thing to be excited about! Sometimes I order the diet dishes with the side of lo mein and stir it all up when it gets here, and I have a delicious meal that’s not too high in calories because they don’t smother everything in oil.
The dumplings are awesome! Heavy on five spice, handmade with a beautiful dipping sauce. Truly don’t skip those. Additional appetizers are average, with the exception of the crab rangoon which are delightfully predictable and wonderful. The Chinese donuts are always a hit! They fry them up right there and deliver them hot with sugar all over them.
That said, some of their dishes are a little strange. Stay away from their American classics like General Tso, orange chicken, sesame chicken, etc. Something weird happens to those.
Bottom line, order smart, try different things, when you find your favorites, keep ordering them. Don’t veer off too much.
