This location is a gem. The interior of the restaurant is rich in colors and hand-crafted design, from the birch chairs and rustic plates to the heritage-imbued architecture. The menu is a refreshingly unique experience of the German and Old-World culture, with beautiful plates and absolutely delicious tastes. You feel really clear how the family here puts their love into what they create for you. Ernest and Cathy are a pleasure to talk with too if you catch a moment to let them share their knowledge and fascination. I highly recommend planning a dinner here with friends and family.

My family has been spending summers on Upper Saranac Lake for more than sixty years. During these times, four generations have enjoyed dining at ‘The Lodge’, encountering generational members of the Hohmeyer family along the way. There are too many stories to describe in this review, however I had the pleasure of reminiscing with the host (Ernest Hohmeyer) my remembrance of his father (as a boy I called him Mr. Hohmeyer) and the Cornucopia dessert he brought to the table at the end of the meal. (Ernest mentioned how challenging it became to find the proper equipment to make the Cornucopia, but he did and the pastry with the ice cream was delicious.) There were many more memories over the decades, but I always find myself back as a child every time we go– Mr. Hohmeyer’s polished manner and German accent, Mrs. Hohmeyer’s Weiner Schnitzel ‘mit the holstein’ (a sunny-side egg on top of the veal), and the sauerbraten with the red cabbage on the side. Those old memories will never fade, but in the wake of them are the new ones being made– we celebrated one of my daughter’s engagement with a pre-dinner surprise at the lakeside, took our middle daughter with her husband for dinner last week, and my wife and I are now babysitting our grandson while our oldest daughter and her fiance enjoy a dinner for themselves this very evening. It won’t be long before the fifth generation become ‘members’ of this special place and I can’t wait for them to experience the uniqueness of the ambiance, food, and hospitality. Thank you, Ernest and Cathy, for maintaining the spirit of ‘The Lodge’ and adding your personal touches to it. Fondly, the Samuels Family (Louis, Fania, Rosa and Mick (and Davey with another on the way), Sara and Keven (with a little one on the way), and Marissa and Mike (with our newest addition, Emelia).

My boyfriend took me here for a special birthday dinner, and I have to say that it was incredibly special! This family owned lodge and restaurant is much more than a place to eat; it’s a dining experience! You are greeted with warm and homey decor, and we got to have a speakeasy experience with a password that unlocks a secret entrance! How fun! We were then led to a downstairs room with a rich history and crackling fire, where we enjoyed some lovely drinks and conversation with other patrons. Upstairs was for the main dinner course. The food was authentic German style, very tasty and warmed us right up on a chilly autumn night. The staff were incredible. This is a family-owned and operated establishment, and it is very apparent that this family puts so much love and effort into their events. They are a kind and friendly bunch who go the extra mile to provide a special hospitality experience. My boyfriend and I are already planning another trip to the area, and this time are going to stay at the lodge!
