Like anybody from Chicago, I ordered a Chicago beef sandwich, hot, sweet and wet. It is literally impossible to eat such a messy sandwich without sitting at a table. Fortunately, for me, the manager/owner took pity on me and took down the velvet rope to allow me to sit at their table. (Thank you).
The sandwich was very expensive compared to most Chicago style Italian beef, but here’s the thing IT WAS WORTH IT. Great sandwich. Probably one of the best beef sandwiches you will find outside of Chicagoland.
If you’re up for it, step up to their counter and order a beef, hot, sweet and wet. Then grab a large stack of napkins cause you are going to need them and enjoy your amazing sandwich.
1/13/25: update
We returned for dinner. Again, simply amazing food. Fun dine in experience. And a super friendly and efficient waiter.
This place is amazing.
If you get one of the tables you’ll be happy, because the pizza is great.
We couldn’t decide between a deep dish and a buttery pan, so we got both.
The Miracle Mile is delicious.
We ordered cheese curds which were pretty good and a large thin crust pepperoni and meatballs, although the meatballs were VERY scarce. The pizza was good though.
The game starts (and if anyone knows football, games last 3 hours or more). The waitress, knowing our table of 2 was there to watch the game, she and another waitress and two other people huddle in front of the tv in front of us, no one else was sitting at the tables so why block the tv from customers watching the game, when you’re just chit chatting. I had to ask three times if they can move to another area.
The game had three minutes left, a very close game and anyone could win the game and then the staff turns the tv volume off and starts flicking the lights on and off continuously at 9:05 pm. I ask, Are you closing? They say we closed at 9:00. I ask why we weren’t notified before 9:00, the game has three minutes to go, we could have left 10 minutes prior to look for another place showing the game. No care in the world for customer service, they were too concerned with where they were all going out on a Saturday night.
Whoever owns this Alma School and Baseline location in Mesa, please have a talk with your staff. If they see customers in when it’s getting close to your closing time, it should be a requirement that your staff inform customers of your closing time; give a 15 minute warning perhaps. I worked as a restaurant and bar manager for 15 years and NEVER EVER in my 15 years would I have EVER push a customer out the door, when they were watching a ball game or tv show with only minutes until it was over. I always informed customers 15 minutes before closing and if they were still eating or watching tv, I’d let them know I am locking the doors so no new customers come in but let me know when you’re ready to leave and I’ll unlock the door . That is how you respect your customers and know they’ll return to your restaurant and recommend to family and friends.
I hope you can make the necessary changes here, we will not return. If you have cameras in this restaurant, you can see who the staff was that night and the staff huddled and chatting in front of us, who they knew we were there to watch the game.
