Bottom line: this is one of the best and most affordable Chinese restaurants in the Pittsburgh area.
A lot of nearby spots serve “fried rice” that feels like plain steamed rice with a bit of coloring and barely any egg or ingredients. The fried rice here is the real deal—traditional-style, well-balanced, and packed with eggs and fresh ingredients. It was genuinely satisfying.
I’ve tried Chinese food not only in LA, San Francisco, and New York, but also in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, mainland China, and Hong Kong—and I can honestly say I’ve never had spring rolls as fresh and generously filled with cabbage as they are here. Their sweet and sour pork is also unusually good for an American Chinese restaurant: the batter is thin, the meat is fresh, and it doesn’t feel heavy or overly doughy.
At some other places, the sweet and sour pork is mostly thick batter—so much so that even my son refuses to eat it. But he happily eats it here, and he specifically asks for this restaurant’s version.
I really hope more local residents recognize how great this place is. They truly deserve to keep growing and doing well.
*** It’s a tall order to find a good one indeed as the average so-called “chinese-food” in America is very bad: deep fried, battered, greasy, salty and/or sugary…
The menu is longish, somewhat pictorial. The listings consists of fairly common familiar Americanized dishes, even the Chef Specials section of the menu.
The Shrimps Snow Peas is incredibly bright green, aromatic and flavorful. There’s a generous portion of Prawns (not shrimps), sautéed with peas and married together with a rather silken slightly thickened white sauce… A great dish that my palate reminds of Fujian / Taiwanese cooking. .
The Buddha Feast, is a familiar American chinese-style dish. It’s good tasting BUT nothing special. VISUALLY, it looks stunningly beautiful medley of veggies, cooked Al Dente BUT low on seasoning and Chinese herbs/spice.
Service is outstanding.
The eatery is well lit and rather minimalist yet a good ambience.
The beef was far superior than Lin’s Garden and the broccoli had the perfect crunch. Not to fancy of a meal for me but the options are endless with special requests available. Low-sodium, fried or not fried etc…
Velvet Chicken? I mean, what do they do to make the meat have such an unnatural, rubbery texture? I’ve heard of velveting with saltwater and cornstarch, but the overall quality of the chicken is very low. The veggies were ok, but everything tastes like MSG. I got a rotten snow pea. I would not eat here again.
When I said that I didn’t like the food, they just ignored me. Being friendly doesn’t equal a focus on the quality of what is being served or a commitment to satisfied customers.
However, the customer service really took away from the experience. It feels like the staff is more focused on making sure we tip than actually providing good service. They not-so-subtly hint that they want a tip which makes things uncomfortable. Additionally, the staff begin treating you badly once you dont tip and they have verbally asked me to tip before. A good restaurant should earn tips through great hospitality, not pressure or expectation.
They should reconsider how they approach customer service especially in regards to tipping. Now Ill be getting my takeout from Lins Garden since they dont haggle me for a tip and the food is just as good
