Living in the north bay or more inland from east bay it can be hard to find a great coffee shop. You are left with the way too sweet Starbucks style coffee that just doesn’t work for really coffee, latte, and my mocha enthusiasts. Enter States coffee. I used to mostly go to their location in Benicia because I live closer. But I recently decided to make the drive to Martinez to enjoy the nice weather and was dying for a great Mocha so when I decided to come through. I was so glad I did. Of course it was easy to find a seat outside to work and enjoy a coffee. They offered to walk my mocha out to me so I could get settled. The mocha They made was artfully done and the foam was prefect! If you hate oversteamed milk that leaves you’re coffee burning your tongue or the foam has bubbles like your doing the dishes then worry not. States is and should be you’re go to coffee spot anywhere from Pleasanton to Fairfield to Antioch and Brentwood. I have been searching for good coffee spots for “real” latte lovers and you wont find anything better then States. Did I mention they roast there own coffee! Go run, walk, drive or bike to States and see for yourself.

This place is good y’all! Coffee on point. Baristas are really kind. The space is large but inviting. The scone I had was delicious. It’s within walking distance of the Amtrak station so it’s a nice place to grab a coffee and a pastry before your trip. I highly recommend this coffee shop!

Best coffee I’ve had in a long time. Staff is great. They roast their own coffee on site. Lots of space to work or even events.
It’s simple… GREAT Coffee and a place to drink it. Indoor and outdoor seating.

Delicious drip coffee and pastries! This might be the biggest coffee shop I’ve ever been to – plenty of room to work and hang.

Disappointing Then, Disappointing Now

I don’t usually write negative reviews, and I especially don’t revisit places years later — but this one feels worth documenting.

I originally visited this coffee shop in 2021 and had a genuinely unpleasant experience during the height of COVID. The policies themselves weren’t the main issue; it was the attitude. Interactions felt cold, condescending, and unnecessarily harsh, to the point that it overshadowed the mediocre coffee entirely. When I shared feedback at the time, the response I received was dismissive, and I was ultimately blocked rather than heard. I noticed that Yelp removed any review having to do with cobid and masking for “violation of community terms”, although that is exactly what was relevant and made me want to visit or stay away from a business back then.

Fast forward several years later: we’ve since moved away, but my husband stopped in last week, not remembering our previous experience. Unfortunately, his visit confirmed that little has changed. The same rude tone, lack of warmth, and unwelcoming environment were still very much present.

Coffee shops are often community spaces — places people go to slow down, connect, and feel welcome. Sadly, this shop has repeatedly missed that mark. There are plenty of places that serve good coffee without making customers feel like an inconvenience, and I’d recommend seeking those out instead.

I truly hope the owners eventually take feedback like this to heart, because it’s not about politics or policies — it’s about basic kindness and respect.

States Coffee in Martinez is hands down the best coffee shop in town! What really sets them apart is their consistency—every drink is spot on, every single time. Whether I’m grabbing a cappuccino, a latte, or just a solid drip coffee, it’s always perfectly made.

The best part? There’s zero coffee snobbery here. The vibe is warm, welcoming, and down-to-earth. They care about making great coffee without the pretentiousness that some other places seem to thrive on.

The shop itself is a cozy, inviting space that’s great for catching up with friends or just taking a moment to yourself. It’s clear they put thought into every detail, and it shows. If you’re looking for a spot with amazing drinks and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, this is it. Highly recommend!

Enjoyed the seasonal coffee, should have asked if the bread couldve been warmed up. Nice seating area, spacious, high ceiling. Has wifi, wasnt too busy around 9am on a Friday. Has a few larger tables for big groups and smaller seatings inside and out. Metered parking nearby.

Also, watch out for that suspicious raccoon outside.

I found myself in Martinez during a trip and decided that since it’s early I wanted to get something to drink. A quick search led me to States Cafe where the atmosphere is cool, the drinks are delightful, and the pastries are just delicious. As for me, I ordered a decaf honey latte that as soon as I took I could taste the honey. It paired well with the banana bread I ordered as the sweetness of both balanced each other out. Now I wonder how it’ll pair with the pastries.

Anyways, this a great cafe to come to if you’re in Martinez it feels small but it isn’t and it’s additional space for dining and family dining make it a both a an area where you can socialize or work, and a kid friendly establishment.

Used to love this place but the coffee made me sick. Couldn’t finish it, tried asking them to remake it where they made sure to tell me it’s my fault because they make their cappuccino like a latte. What? Anyway, not even cute foam art & they don’t sell avocado toast anymore. Blah! I won’t waste my time driving over there anymore. Also parked outside and got a tool stuck in my tire. Lovely!
