Quaint, long-running (since 1986) cafe for country French fare & wines, plus weekend breakfast.

We had dinner for our son‘s birthday. He loves their duck. The trout almondine was also excellent. There was only one waitress working and the restaurant was completely booked. She did an amazing job attending to all the tables. Cafe Normandie is always a great experience!

At 4.3 with 820 reviews, my girlfriend and I had high hopes for this place but calling it mid would be too generous. We came in right when it opened at 5pm and were greeted by a Gen Z stare – she wasn’t rude but it wasn’t the most welcoming tone to set. As another reviewer noted the decor is a bit drab and in dire need of redecorating. Our server was polite but didn’t seem enthusiastic about her job. We also noticed that she poured the water from the bottle for another table but not for us. We ordered from the prix fixe early dinner menu but stuck to water for beverages since we didn’t want to drink alcohol and their menu had only two non alcoholic drinks at $8 each. The food came out at a reasonable time, but as you can see, the presentation was not spectacular. Most of the food was pretty bland – not terrible, but absolutely not worth the price we paid at $45 per person. My duck was tender with crispy skin, but really lacked in flavor. So much about French cooking is in the sauce, but mine only had a hint of raspberry flavor and the dish came with so little of it. Unbelievably vegetables are not integrated into their entrees, so I elected to add “green vegetables” for an extra $4 – a dish that resulted in extremely lightly seasoned steamed green beans with a few slivers of carrots – hardly what I’d expect from French cuisine. The steak was cooked to medium rather than medium rare and was very chewy. The meat in general tasted low quality and cooked from frozen. The crème caramel turned out to just be box-made flan with the worst presentation I’ve ever seen. The fruit tart mostly tasted store-bought and the tart base tasted freezer-burned, though the custard was fine and the berries all tasted fresh. The best and quite honestly only good part was the potatoes, though their texture was inconsistent and some were a bit oily. I really don’t understand how this restaurant has so many positive reviews. One last note is the bathrooms in the basement were very dimly lit – I could barely see the urinal. I shudder to think how well the place is cleaned under the surface. One toilet stall was not even flushed (even though we were the first to use it after the restaurant opened). This lack of attention to detail makes me wonder about the state of the kitchen they cook in. Overall not a horrible experience but I plan to never go back so take that as you will.

My friend and I went here for brunch and it did not disappoint! I got the seafood omelette and it was amazing! The flavors worked so well together and the amount of seafood was fair for the price you pay. The home fries come with the meal and those were perfection. My friend ordered eggs Benedict with Canadian bacon. She said it was tasty but not nearly as good as the apple cinnamon Belgian waffles she also got. If you go, which you should, make sure to order the bread. It’s delicious. Not your typical French baguette. It’s served warm with what seemed to be house made butter. 10/10 would go again!

Was expecting the best and got the worst! The reviews all sounded great but the truth hurts. We walked in on time , actually few minutes early for our reservation was greeted by a lost soul unsure of what to do, maybe it was her first day, we were seated next to a blazing hot fire place that made us feel like we were what was being cooked for dinner (next day met a local who told us yes that fireplace seat is a killer and to hot to sit next to), made the drinks warm and melted the butter it was so hot . The interior decor dated to the point that Gordon Ramsey would tear it all out , needs an extensive make over, service was pitiful, Tatiana our waitress took out drink order then came back for our dinner order, never saw her again after that till we asked a busser for the check, no visits to ask if we wanted another cocktail, no visits to see how anything was, the worst service ever, food runners dropped the food and ran, this was a Monday night and not horribly busy but food took forever and service non existent! Horrible Service. Food quality and menu, we tried a supposed signature dish the salmon with blueberries and a beurre blanc sauce , the blueberries did absolutely nothing we wondered before we ordered so we figured we’d try it and we’re left still wondering, just didn’t work, ordered the Chef Jean Louis special which is like a mini tasting menu of 4 dishes sounded splendid and a can’t miss boy were we wrong, the salmon blueberry concoction need we say more, the crab imperial which was ok, the shrimp provencale which was like scampi and a piece of filet mignon which was ordered medium and served so rare it was mooing, the website says Chef Jean Louis has been cooking since he was 13, with what was served a few cooking lessons along the way would have helped out tremendously. Our impression, good thing it’s in a tourist town as Jean Lousy has a steady stream of first time last time never going back suckers like us! Way better food, service and places to go!

I don’t normally leave negative reviews, but unfortunately I have to this time. My fiance and I went here for lunch on Valentine’s Day, and while the food was all delicious, the service was completely unacceptable.
When we were sat at our table there was only one cup and two knives (no forks). The waitress had to grab a cup from another table, and we had to ask multiple times to be brought forks. We decided to order appetizers and entrees at the same time, but it took twenty minutes just to get our appetizers, and when they finally did come they forgot our bread – we had to ask for it.
At one point we’d asked for another bottle of water for the table, the waitress told us she’d bring us one, but she never did. We had to ask again about twenty minutes later before it finally arrived. It was over an hour after placing our order before we got our actual entrees delivered to us. During that time, I noticed another couple who came in after us had already been served their food (their waitress seemed much more diligent in checking on them). When the food finally did arrive, they forgot the fries that came with my sandwich and I had to ask for them.
I completely understand that kitchens get busy and staffing issues happen. However, there was never any acknowledgement or apology from our waitress for the delays or the multiple mistakes. She barely checked on us the two hours we were there – we ended up being helped by the hostess (who was very helpful) more than our waitress.
I would probably go back to this place – the food was genuinely delicious – but if I experience this level of service again I won’t be going back.

Great lunch today!! Excellent food as always. Our seating beside the fireplace was nice on a cold day! We were welcomed by Randall & quickly seated! He was friendly and engaging with such a fun attitude! Our server, Alex, was helpful, also friendly and gave perfect service. BOTH staff members elevated our lunch with their friendliness, professionalism and great service. Thank you! We will be back

Excellent Veal Normandie, Duck in raspberry sauce, Crepe Suzanne and Creme Brulee very good too. Top quality cuisine and service is what you pay for and appreciate here. Highly recommended, perhaps the best cuisine in Maryland.
10/11/22. Incredibly consistent. Still highly recommended.
02/14/22. We chose lunch on one of the worst days in the year to test a restaurant. Turned up 20 mins before the booking. Seated immediately. They seem very short of staff but this hardly impacted service much at all. They all work really hard. Excellent and patient service from Matthew. Shared a starter Charcuterie which was excellent.
Chose the day’s special Pork Osso buco (Italian recipe ;-). Superbly cooked. Meat fell off the bone. Sauce really good, and the tagliatelle shone through a beautifully balanced, and large dish.
Yes they charge for bread, but what bread… Get some! We had two portions!
Profiteroles were a tad delayed so I suspect my portion was a bit bigger than usual… 😉
7/19/25 Another excellent visit. Lovely recommended Coc au Vin. Veal medallions in lemon butter sauce was superb. Tagliatelle cooked and served to perfection. I had another Crepe Suzanne and it was a huge desert. My wife had another crepe with caramel and it was just as huge. Staff caught unaware by a sudden influx of customers. Tatiana and the others all worked extremely hard. As soon as they saw daylight they recapped to make sure everyone had what they wanted.
I noticed that their lunch menu has something for everyone at just about any price range.
Still highly recommended. 5 Pictures att.

Escargot is highly recommended: served classically, no add-ons that ruin the flavor. Just escargots, butter and garlic. Among the drinks, Normandie Fizzes are fine, the elderflower one is sweeter than the pomegranate one.

Went here for our 24th anniversary and it was pitiful. We stood at the entrance for 27 minutes while staff ignored us. Our table was still sticky and had crumbs from the previous group. For our drinks, we ordered the L’Elysee and La Peche and they arrived after our appetizers hit the table. The drinks were ridiculously sweet and uninteresting. The escargots were so chewy, we assumed they were microwaved. My wife got the Veal Francais and it had a weird metallic taste that we alerted our server about, but the owner never came out to address us for some reason. Absolutely did not stay for dessert.
What a shame how much this restaurant has declined over the years. Would give zero stars if I could.
