THE BEST PART: there’s free parking on the back ♂️
Sunset Sushi unfolds patiently.
Each omakase bite, calm and precise,
Soft rice cradling fish like silk and ice.
Day fades gently, flavors stay —
A quiet feast at the edge of day.
THANK YOU FOR FAST DELIVERY!!!
, I digress. Due to the fact we were late the entire experience was rushed and just not good. We were told we would get a free cocktail and no one knew that was the case. Then we got our bill and we got charged for water…. Just crazy. The chefs were delightful but the Experience was horrible. We will never go back!
The 18 course was a bit tuna heavy lacking in a wide variety of Japanese white fish common in high end sushi locations. No uni on a premium menu also. The rice was a bit too firm. But all in this was a good meal, just not yet at the upper level of sushi restaurants.
First of all, it’s billed as a two-hour experience. We were finished in an hour (not counting dessert). Had I known it was so short, I would have just gone to Sushi by Bou for $65 per person. While our chef Yana was lovely, the seating was half empty and there just wasn’t any energy or showmanship that we have experienced at other omakase restaurants. 7pm on a Saturday during season should be full, but there were only 5 seats filled out of 12. The ambiance was also just off. I get that they were going for a speakeasy vibe, but it really just felt like a boring cold room in the back of a restaurant.
The menu, while tasty, pales in comparison to what they used to do. I know they reduced the price and amount of courses, but for $98, I expected a few more imaginative dishes. There was just not a ton of variation in format or tastes, and since they were out of the shrimp, they instead served a crab salad “taco” which was just a heavy unwelcome mayo bomb. The sweet potato cheesecake at the end was very good, but again, it felt like it didn’t belong as part of the meal. It was very heavy and I felt like it was meant to make sure you left feeling full.
With so much competition in the area, I expected more. We will likely not be back.
The chef’s creativity shone through each meticulously crafted course, showcasing the finest and freshest ingredients. Every dish was a delightful surprise, with flavors and textures that danced harmoniously on my palate. The omakase journey took me on a culinary adventure I’ll cherish.
The service was impeccable, with attentive staff who were knowledgeable about the different kinds of sake and provided fascinating insights into the preparation and origins of each ingredient. The pacing of the courses was perfect, allowing me to savor every moment.
What truly stood out was the chef’s passion and dedication to their craft. Their artistry in combining traditional techniques with innovative flavors made this omakase experience truly exceptional.
In summary, Sunset Sushi is a gem for anyone seeking an authentic and unforgettable omakase dining experience. It’s a place where culinary artistry meets top-notch service, and I can’t wait to return for another remarkable journey through their ever-changing menu.
