Reviews
Food = Tasted burned and both burgers were overcooked, sloppy, falling apart, soggy buns, fries were bland and drenched in melted cheese.
Ambiance = Nice, good music. It was rainy out but there was plenty of covered areas (with umbrellas) to sit. Cold weather but the outdoor heater was off.
Price = Overpriced for poor quality, poor tasting, falling apart food.
Service = Kind, polite, answered questions.
Would I try it again? Yes because perhaps it was just a bad one off. TBH, quite possibly the worst burger I’ve ever had. I hope next time tastes better.
Read the sign and understand that patience is a virtue when it comes to this chefs food. Its worth the wait.
And if youre waiting a while, chefs wife is yelling at you for free drinks! Love it!
Got a bacon cheeseburger, PB Banana shake, cheesesteak and chicken sandwich to go. Downed the shake during the wait, 10/10. Burger 10/10 Cheesesteak is heavy as advertised, 10/10.
This place is awesome!
I’m an older San Diego native who has spent a lifetime devouring burgers of every kind, from hole-in-the-wall classics to high-end creations. Trying Burger Kook was genuinely one of the best food decisions I’ve ever made.
Pros:
• Quality that’s on another level. They use a fine-dining blend of meat you can immediately taste. This isn’t the cheap, mystery-meat patty you get from fast food. It’s rich, flavorful, and cooked perfectly.
• Fries made in beef tallow! Yes, actual beef tallow, not seed oils. The fries were incredible and had that old-school flavor that modern places forgot existed.
• Everything tastes like real food again. My entire meal reminded me of the way food used to taste, before shortcuts and cost-cutting became the norm.
• Owners are Amazing!
They make you feel like they have known you forever. Service is like, hello new best friend! If you don’t receive this kind of service, they must be slammed! It did get busy quick while we were there. We waited out front well before they were even open. It was worth the wait.
Cons:
• I ate too much, but that’s completely on me. Portions here are generous, almost dangerous, especially if you suffer from weak portion control like I do. It’s nearly impossible to look at leftovers and not take “just one more bite.” My stomach isn’t upset, it’s simply full past my capacity. Again, my fault… not theirs.
What We Ordered:
My buddy and I went all in, three burgers, each cut in half so we could try multiple. Big shout-out to the staff for happily accommodating the request.
We tried:
* BBQ
* OG KOOK
* OKC
Plus regular fries and the bacon cheese fries. Everything was phenomenal!
Service & Atmosphere:
The service is not super fast and it’s not supposed to be. It’s even posted on their wall. Their business model cares about what they deliver not how fast it gets there. If you want a quick, cheap drive-thru meal that leaves you with regret, there are plenty of places for that. Burger Kook is something different. Coming here feels like stepping into a modern-day time warp where food is crafted with care and the people are genuinely happy to serve you. It’s personal, it’s warm, and it has that old-school hospitality you didn’t realize you missed or some younger generations never got.
Final Verdict:
I LOVE BURGER KOOK! It’s not just a meal, it’s an experience, and easily one of the best burger spots in San Diego. I will crave this place from now on and visit often.
