The dining room is spotless, showcasing the wooden beams and French posters on the wall that give it a true French bistro feel. A bistro is where you find excellent food in a more casual setting than you would for fine dining, and Bistro 42 succeeds admirably. The menu changes seasonally to reflect the seasonality of the ingredients. Chef Dom is well known among Capitol Region chefs, and on an earlier visit an iconic Albany chef was enjoying dinner with his family at the next table.
Now let me tell you a story that illustrates both Chef Dom’s creative approach to his restaurant and his skill as a chef. A few years ago, Bistro 42 was closed on Mondays, as are most Capitol Region restaurants. One Monday evening I was at a business meeting just down the street from the bistro. As the meeting ended I mentioned how much I liked Bistro 42, while observing that, as it was Monday, the restaurant was closed. On a whim I turned down Classic Street on my way back to NY 7 and was surprised to see that I had been wrong – Bistro 42 was open. I swung into the parking lot (room for a dozen cars, about) directly across the street and went inside. Chef Dom had decided to open on Mondays for customers to enjoy Monday Night Football on the tv in the bar. Shortly after I walked in, two couples entered and were greeted by Dom. They had never dined there before and asked what kind of food was served. Chef Dom replied “tell me what you would like and if I have the ingredients I’ll make it for you.” Of course they stayed! That’s Chef Dom in a nutshell – always looking for new ways to serve and delight his customers.
I cannot recommend Bistro 42 highly enough. Go. Soon.
And one last story. It was a Chef Dom’s long-held dream to have his own restaurant. When the opportunities lined up, he dove in. His Grand Opening never happened because the Governor chose that day to order the closure of all restaurants, during the COVID crisis. So there he was, all his money invested in a restaurant he was not allowed to open. Chef Dom pivoted. He set up a food truck on the street nearby and operated it until he could finally open Bistro 42. The energy and passion it took to bring his business through Covid is evident today in every aspect of Bistro 42.
The atmosphere was relaxed with no tv screens.
Serves slow at the start.
He made a top shelf from scratch margarita that was overly sour and strong. It is hard to get a margarita perfect from scratch. I have only had one even do it. I had to ask for it to be lightened up so i could drink it. He never asked if i wanted another drink. I had to ask for a water. I loved the fact that him came over and set up the table with the silverware that i needed for what i ordered.
Shrimp cocktail great presentation. Sauce is different not like a cocktail sauce I have ever had. Creamy very mild cocktail sauce. I really like it just needed a little more zip to it (Horseradish)
Santee potatoes great taste but a little on the saggy side. Brussels sprouts haven’t changed, not a big fan but i think it could use a sauce.
The steak was cooked just right. Good taste but not a lot of seasoning.
Ended with Crème brûlée. I personal never had this. I don’t think i will ever get it again. The sugar crust on top had a sour bitter taste. The strawberry was the best flavor in the whole dish.
The whole atmosphere, presentation of the food and the professionalism of the service was top notch 4 stars. Price was $$$ but was reasonably for the times. Parking not much of any. The window needed to be cleaned, had dead flies on it. The bar table was wobbly. The little things that could be fixed easily 2*.
