Lunch at Tonya’s felt like being invited into the kitchen of your best friend’s mama growing up. That is to say, Southern done right! Counter service, yes, but with a side of friendliness and welcome. I opted for old school favorites – fried chicken livers that may have been the best I’ve ever had, potato salad perfection, and sizzling fried okra, finished up with a sweet cornbread muffin that felt almost like dessert. Added bonus- shopping at the bake counter on the way out! Hats off to Tonya and her staff,; we will be back!

Food was delicious and very filling. The food was seasoned to perfection, NO salt or pepper needed. I gave them a 3 because the service could have been better. For example we waited 31 minutes for the cornbread flight while others received theirs in a shorter time frame. After hitting the 55 minutes mark we got our main entrees.

Some of the best friend chicken in the south (owner is from the Mama Dips family), definitely worth the visit just for the chicken. Cooked fresh when you order it. I wasn’t overwhelmed with the fried green tomatoes, not bad but the cornmeal breading wasn’t particularly crisp and not enough sauce (but the portion was great). Service was very friendly.

We had the fried chicken and fried catfish which were both delicious and perfectly crispy. The stars of the show for us were the sides – mac n cheese, collared greens, mashed potatoes with gravy, and squash casserole. Tony was so nice and welcoming! We will definitely be back!

Husband And I wanted some brunch food, but we have different ideas of what that should look like. Well, in doing some searching, and we found this place! We’ve been in the area for a few years, but this was my first time coming for brunch— and OMG it was DELICIOUS! Not only were the pastries (glazed donut and key lime pie donut) delicious, but the food really hit the spot. We had the banana puffing waffle and a bacon plate and pimento cheese + chicken biscuit. That waffle really hit the spot. By the time I got to my actual food, I was too full (but that bacon was so deliciously crisp!). The biscuit was nice and buttery too. The service was exceptional as well. There is a young man who is constantly going back and forth, ensuring that folx are getting what they need; and the staff in general is super polite. We ended up asking for more pimento cheese (because my husband loves it) and they were so gracious about it.
Truly, I know I’ll be coming back! Theres just so much more I’d like to try.

We had just a wonderful lunch here, everything was delicious. Staff was lovely, Tonya was hard at work. Fried chicken was the best in town, sides were great (fried okra was a real hit), kids loved their chicken and dumplings. Fried green tomatoes were perfect. Everything tasted bright and fresh. You can hardly find food like this in Chapel Hill anymore, and if you can it’s not this well prepared. We got an assortment of desserts, and I have to say their pecan bar must be one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. Unfortunately, my kids agreed and ate most of my bar on the drive back!
This place is a real gem. If you’re new to town or new to the south, you’ve got to give it a try. And if you miss the old Mama Dip’s you’ll love how their classics taste fresh and updated here. I really enjoyed our meal and look forward to going back and trying other things on the menu.

We went for brunch, and everything was delicious. I had Chicken Salad w/two sides, Mac and Cheese, and Collards. My daughter and granddaughter really enjoyed it too. We look forward to going back. My only suggestion is to make the sides larger. They are on the small side. Your sides are little more than a taste of the wonderful items.

Stopped in here to get a bite to eat while doing some errands. I’d been here once before while picking up an order for someone else and wanted to try it for myself this time!
Upon entering, the atmosphere was clean and bright. In addition to their dining room area, they also have a delightful small market of house-made baked goodies and other items for sale.
I ordered their daily specials, which today was a Chicken Salad Wrap with either potato salad or fruit cup. I opted for the fruit cup. I didn’t have to wait long for my food. I took a bite of the wrap and that’s where my culinary experience kinda plateaued…. the chicken salad was completely lacking in flavor. I’m picky about my chicken salad and this was far from great. To be honest, it tasted store bought, though I’m sure it was made in-house. I say that because I found a lovely piece of cartilage in the chicken salad.
As for the fruit, it was pretty basic, cubed watermelon with most of the seeds gone and blueberries.
I get this isn’t fine dining but guys come on…let’s put a lil more effort into our dishes, shall we? At least add some salt and pepper, perhaps some celery and a little onion to that chicken salad. And oh, make sure all the bones are removed. As for the fruit, get seedless watermelon for crying out loud, and it’s summer, so use other summer fruit and punch up that fruit cup.
I was charged $14 for this plate of food. That means it cost about $4.60 to make each plate. Bit over priced for bland chicken salad and boring fruit. $11 or $12 would have been better.
Their bathroom could also use some attention as well.
Bottom line, might be back, might not. They had other tasty looking options on the menu, but if what I had today was example of how they other dishes would come out, then no thanks!

My husband ordered the Basic Burger with a side salad. No complaints. I had chicken fried steak (something different for me).with mashed potatoes and collards. The steak was delicious, and the sides were tasty. My only issue was the price of iced tea. $4? Really? That’s a bit of a stretch. My husband ordered it and I tasted it. Very good not-too sweet iced tea, but at that price, I’ll just have water. Service was great, not much of an “atmosphere” to speak of. Order at the counter and food is brought to your table. Support local businesses!

A rare find, a wonderful quiet atmosphere to meet and eat with friends without distracting/annoying background noise. Nicely decorated, comfortable seating, and quiet. No background music interfering with a warm conversation with friends. A limited but delicious menu with a level of service that is “I care” customer centered and thoughtful. Definitely a goto breakfast destination. The bakery, so far I am hooked on the lemon bars, its an addiction. This is an eatery and bakery that has deep generational roots here in Chapel Hill. Visit once and you will be hooked.
