Alright, El Charro, nestled in the Ambassador Suites at 716 21st St, Virginia Beach—you’re not a total disaster, but you’re not exactly setting the world on fire either. This place has the makings of a decent Mexican joint, but it’s stumbling in a way that leaves you hungry for more.
I went for the beef monstrosity, and it starts with a promising hit of spice that gets your hopes up. But then it falls flat—missing some of those key ingredients promised on the menu. You’re left with a bowl of beef and broth that’s just too fatty, making it more heavy than hearty. It’s not awful, mind you, just not the fiesta it could’ve been with a bit more care.
The Mexican soda? Spot on—crisp, bubbly, and a proper refreshment. But the chips and salsa? The chips came out cold and a bit limp, and the salsa, served ice-cold, tasted more like mild ketchup than the zesty kick you’d crave. It’s a starter that doesn’t quite start the party.
El Charro, you’ve got a great spot by the beach—tighten up the execution, bring the menu to life, and warm up those chips. There’s potential here for something proper tasty. As it stands, it’s a middle-of-the-road three stars. Step it up, and you could be brilliant!

There is nothing special here. Move along. The staff was welcoming, but I noticed a couple of times they were making fun of customers. One employee was blantantly eating food behind the bar. We asked for white sauce for our nachos and was told they didn’t serve white sauce; but we noticed that another table was served it. It didn’t matter anyway because they served us stale nachos. Luckily, those are complimentary, or I would have just sent them back. I can not speak on behalf of the bar. No one in our party had an adult beverage. They have one large screen TV, and when it had a signal, it was a political channel. There’s not much of any ambiance here. The one good thing I’ll say is that the grilled chicken in my salad was seasoned well. Overpriced for quality here.

No complaints about our visit at all. A group of us went and the food was quite good.
Chips and salsa are bottomless, drink cups are large, and the Fajitas I got were delicious. This was a great combination for a group that hadn’t had time to eat up to that point in the day.
I’d happily go back any time.

Absolutely wonderful place. Food is amazing, people are kind, drinks are strong and prices are good. I had their carnitas burrito last summer and had been anxiously awaiting their reopening for the summer because I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Lets start with the welcoming and friendly service to the homemade and freshly made salsa . I had 2 rounds of the salsa alone; its soooo good. I ordered the strimp chimichangas & let me tell you … the cook put his foot in it. I never had a chimi so good in my life. Im on vacation but if I lived down here, I will probably visit this place every other day. The strimp tacos was also bomb. The strimp are cooked to prefection. I been to alot of places down at the beach & i took a uber to this one & its well worth the trip. A true master piece this place 🙂

Our server Jocelyn (also our bartender) was attentive and made the best spicy margaritas and also table side guacamole I’ve had in a long, long while! We had the fajitas for 2 and they delivered! Very generous portion! We will be back

Located next to Ambassador Inn. Very good Mexican restaurant. The MARGARITAs was the best I ever had! Don Julio’s tequila was on point. Had the enchilada supreme and was very delicious They have karaoke on Sunday night. Staff was very attentive and they kept my salsa and chips full.
