EXCELLENT first time experience! Staff was friendly, restaurant was clean, and food was delicious and affordable! They offer kids eat in free which was wonderful! I asked for a knife which they didn’t have and a kind younger male employee brought me smaller chicken for my daughter! We absolutely can’t wait to go back. I got the el toro! It was incredible! 10/10!!!

I just want to share my awesome experience at Roots Natural Kitchen. I had researched places where I could get a salad/healthy food option while traveling and Roots Natural Kitchen came up on my search. I have a nut allergy and I reached out to inquire about food allergens and food allergy precautions and recieved a friendly and timely email. Needless to say I felt safe eating at Roots Natural Kitchen. When I arrived at the store, I placed my order. I saw that the bowl would be more food than I wanted to eat and asked for the smaller sized bowl, not realizing that it was a kids size bowl. I am obviously not a child, but I wanted a smaller serving size and the servers obliged me and gave me the smaller sized bowl. I just want to state that I appreciate the kindness of the employees for not berating me for not knowing that I couldn’t technically have that size and continuing to serve me. The employees went above and beyond when serving me and in the future, I will know to ask for a bowl and just simply split it with someone. Employee service was excellent and the food itself was tasty, nutritious, and allergen friendly for me. I’m so grateful for your hospitality and to have found Roots Natural Kitchen as an option when I travel.

This place was the savior of my trip to Pittsburgh. The food scene in this city is hit or miss. The people are incredibly friendly. This place is what chipotle pretends it is. Which is ironic because there is one a couple doors down. I had the el toro which was delicious. Also got some extra sauce. I would definitely come back

This food is so freaking good. Way better than chipotle and healthier. Amazing portions, it is pricier for two people but it’s worth it.

Party of 4 went for lunch on a Friday afternoon in October. You have to order food at the counter, they prepare the bowl right there, you pick it up and bring it to your table. Not ideal for my party because we had 3 senior citizens. Food was really good quality, and enough quantity for 1.5 meals I’d say. I had the Balboa bowl which was really really tasty and also felt quite healthy. I replaced the feta with broccoli and black beans, to which they had no issues. The place is loud, especially close to the food counters. Total before tips came to around 70 bucks for 4 bowls and water.

I ordered pickup for a chk/rice bowl and a chk salad.
I was shocked not only by the quality of the ingredients, but by the number of add-ins and topping options available.
If you are looking for a quality Whole Foods place to grab a healthy meal. This is the spot.
The salad was good but the lettuce was about to turn.
The rice bowl was excellent.

We ordered two bowls on 10-11-25, Roots Cochran Rd Mt Lebanon. The “Mayweather and the El Jefe. I have mostly had pleasant experiences we meals from Roots, but today I was disappointed. I requested substituting the Arcadia greens for the Kale. The greens in my meal were wilted, old and slimy. It was quite disgusting. Disappointed!

My wife, daughter, and I recently tried Roots Natural Kitchen on Cochran Rd and were seriously impressed.
It’s kind of like Chipotle style ordering — build your own bowl — but better. The ingredients tasted fresher, more natural, and overall healthier. And the portion sizes? Huge. The bowls are packed. We actually ended up taking a good amount home because there was so much food.
The best part? Kids eat free. That’s almost unheard of anymore and such a blessing for families.
On top of that, the service stood out. We were cutting up our daughter’s chicken at the table and one of the gentlemen working noticed and brought us smaller pieces without us even asking. That level of attentiveness and kindness doesn’t go unnoticed.
Great food, great portions, great service. We’ll definitely be back.

So this was our first time at the Cochran Rd. Roots. It was an exceptional experience. The restaurant is very clean, and a staff member was actively cleaning tables and the service area almost the entire time we were there. It was great to see them so concerned about the customer experience. The food, although a bit on the pricey side, is very good. The service was fast, and the staff were very friendly and engaging. I visited the restroom while there, and it too, was very clean. Can’t wait to return to there again in the future.

I’ve loved the Roots in Oakland for years and was super excited to hear there was one opening right down the road from me in the South Hills. I’ve ordered delivery or drive thru from them about 5-6 times now since the grand opening. There has definitely been some consistency issues and forgetting of add-ons. I get the Balboa every single time because it is so darn tasty. This past Sunday was my last visit and they completely forgot to add the jalapeños I paid for as an add-on and also forgot the pita chips which are typically in the bowl. Half the time the chicken portion has been super light as well considering it’s supposed to be 1.5x serving…I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt and really hope they are just working out the kinks for having just opened. I hope the consistency improves because it’s really one of the best guilty free spots to eat these days.
EDIT: I am done with this location. They have consistently messed up our order the last handful of times we ordered delivery from here. They somehow forgot to add the chicken to my Balboa last night, again, which is the main ingredient….and this wasn’t the first time. My wife and I ordered from here about 15x since they opened and they have only got our orders correct around 30% of the time. We always do the Balboa and Pesto Caesar, yet they somehow continue to screw it up by missing ingredients completely or adding copious, inedible amounts of dressing… It’s ALWAYS something. I can’t imagine how it would turn out if we actually attempted to order a “build your own” bowl. It’s a shame because we really loved the first Roots location in PGH and were super excited about this store opening since it is so close and convenient to where we live, but the constant and now expected inconsistency at this point…we’re over it. We’ll stick with the Oakland location from now on.
