I had been wanting to try this place a couple times and finally time allowed us too. So my bestfriend and we on a double date and we came here. The place looks nice, it definitely has a nice couples vibe to it. The food was good. I wish they had macaroni and cheese on the menu but they don’t, but my loaded mash was delicious with those lam chops! They were seasoned to perfection. I definitely recommend trying those. The salmon bites were delicious too. The only issue we had was 1st walking in. All the female waiters was standing at the desk but when we got to the front they just left. My bestfriend and I was tempted to walk the hell out. But then manger came and sat us and luckily none of those clicks who left was our waiter. So we kept it cute and classy. Our waiter was super nice and very attentive. I wish I would have remembered her name but she was bright and skinned and tall, we tipped her very well. She changed our experience from a negative start to a great experience and good time!

I had a very disappointing experience at Checkmate. Unfortunately, the service was extremely unprofessional from start to finish. Our waiter checked on us only once during the entire visit. When we attempted to get her attention, she rolled her eyes and put her head down, which was both disrespectful and inappropriate.
To make matters worse, the host/bartender openly bragged about having rude exchanges with guests. That kind of attitude speaks volumes about the establishment’s customer service culture.
Gratuity is automatically included and charged per guest, which makes it seem as though the staff feels no obligation to provide quality service. Regardless of automatic gratuity, professionalism and attentiveness should still be a priority.
Additionally, the bathrooms were not maintained. The server was informed that there were guests inside and that the restroom had no toiletries or paper towels, yet nothing was done to address the issue. It appeared as though it was not considered important.
Based on this experience, I would strongly suggest opting for takeout instead of dining in. If you choose to visit Checkmate, please be mindful of these concerns.

The restaurant has a nice ambiance and is clean, with good drinks that we all enjoyed. We had the Torched Mango Martini and Checkmate Old fashion.
The Asian cauliflower was absolutely delicious, but the chicken wings were disappointingly small. The lobster fried rice was overcooked and a bit too salty.
The checkmate burger was good, but nothing special. The ribeye was ok, but not worth $65.
Overall, it was a decent experience, but we probably won’t go back.

Checkmate is small on the inside. I suggest making reservations. The Checkmate burger was really good. The Caesar salad (not pictured) was good. The lamb chops were pretty tasty. The lemon pepper wings (party size wings) were okay. The fries could use more flavor. The lobster fried rice was NOT good at all. The potato cakes were nothing special. We had to send it back for sour cream and green onions (nothing like the picture on the website). We wanted to try the Beignet flight but they didn’t have it. The Knights Ending (Expresso martini) and Queens Crush was just okay. For $16/$18 the glass could have came full. Even though I asked for the Expresso martini creamy option. I didn’t get it. They have Happy hour. The food overall was mediocre. The service was mid. Our waitress wasn’t that friendly. The atmosphere is really nice for date night or a night time vibe. It’s really dark inside. I do love the TVs every where. The bathroom could be attended to a little more. We were charged automatic gratuity even though my son and his family came in later and sat at a different table.

The restaurant is dark but inviting. It’s small but can accommodate a larger groups. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Thursday is lady’s night free lemonade drop. We ordered from the happy hour menu. Jerk and lemon pepper wing and potato cakes. The potato cakes are excellent and delicious. Could eat many of them but $8 for 2 I’ll have to settle. The jerk wings were tiny but the sauce was sweet a little bit of spice. The lemon pepper wings were small too and tasted ok. Got the torched mango martini and it was good. Definitely taste the mango. All in all I would go back and try more things on the menu. I’ll go with my husband next time. We went the girls before a concert.

1st time here…5/10
Food needs improvement. Everything has a funny taste. The menu is very minimal. I’m not sure why the dishes aren’t mastered since it’s so basic and minimal.
The atmosphere and is inviting and cozy. However we had to fetch for our waiter so many times because she was so busy on the phone! Also, please list that there is a 20% gratuity makes since why our waitress cared-less.
Can’t say that I would be back, unless the menu changes!

My husband made a reservation to celebrate our anniversary on 2/13/25 at 7pm. Parking was free at that time on the street across from the restaurant. The sidewalk was not shoveled from the street to the door, only from the parking lot next to the restaurant, which is unfortunate considering our attire for anniversary celebration.
We entered the restaurant and the decor was great! It looks like a fine dining restaurant for an intimate evening. The host did not take us to our table or help with our coat removal like a fine dining restaurant would do. The host pointed to our table and said this is your table. It was close to the door so no problem there. The table we had was a booth. It was a tight squeeze to get into the booth with the height of the table and the closeness of the booth. I would request no booth table next time.
The host noticed my husband and I trying to photograph our visit and informed us of the upstairs set up for optimum photo options. There was a very nice Valentines day decor. The host took us up stairs and took our photos for us. It was great!
The restaurant is a mix environment of fine dining and bar. The staff were dressed in club/bar attire, the waitress’ wore all black tight leggings and t-shirts. I saw people smoking hookah at the bar. The food prices and options scream 5 star restaurant. The decor also seems 5 star at first sight.
The waitress and staff were friendly. We scanned the bar code for the menu and ordered with the patient waitress. The food was excellent!!!!! The best lamb chops I have ever had! OMG the sauce/seasoning, tenderness, and presentation was great!!! I will be back for the lamb chops! My husband ordered the lobster rice and jerk chicken. I ordered the lamb chops and stuffed chicken. The food was good!
The only improvement I would suggest is shoveling the entire area outside, make the reservation memorable by acknowledgement of occasion for visit, and get taller tables at the booths. I will return, it was a pleasant experience overall.

The service was slow. We needed to be ready to give the server our full order whenever we could catch them. The server wasn’t that friendly; he barely spoke to us and most asks seemed like he was doing us a favor – but gratuity is auto added. Most of the food had more sauce than sustenance. The udon noodles and lobster fried rice were both very sweet. It tasted like it was cooked in a teriyaki concentrate that wasn’t properly diluted. The rice was also crunchy. The Cajun pasta was overly rich and greasy, and had more cheese than pasta – we were getting sick at the table. We asked for ginger ale and it came out clear, as if the syrup needed to be changed, so we had to switch to ginger beer. The salad had so much dressing on it that there was a puddle of it at the bottom of the plate, you could scoop it with a spoon. The oysters had a heavy cream sauce on them, but not much ‘oyster juice’ which made them seem like they were prepped days ago, not prepared fresh that night. Wings were tiny and overcooked. The food was flavorful, but everything needed the sauce to be dialed back. Lastly, we were told they didn’t have any desserts that night. The reviews are so mixed, it seems like you have to go when the right person is cooking and we went on a bad night. It’s too pricey to be so inconsistent.
