Their restaurant is very beautifully constructed. The location is at the start of the Delmar loop and the servers are very good — treating all guests nicely.
They have two areas to work on — the food and the expense. The food quality is actually decent for the St Louis area… uni and otoro (sea urchins and fatty tuna) are on their menu which isn’t common for most. Yet by our personal experience the quality in sushi grade doesn’t quite match the level presented here. Also the cost was considerably higher than most St Louis sushi experiences. We had expected this, and suspect it is partially due to its location, and partially due to their newness.
Overall, I personally love kaiten sushi (conveyor belt style). It is a first for St Louis, so I hope Sakatanoya (Sakata’s Shop) does well and gets even better over time.
Now about the restaurant…I wanted to try the new “sushi on conveyor belt” restaurant so here we are. We were there at 5pm when they just opened for dinner and it was filled quickly. All plates are color coded and each color is different. Once you are done with one plate, put it into a slot like you are returning a movie at Blockbuster and it tracks the total. Your server still has to bring you the bill. For appetizer, choices other than conveyor belt sushi, you can order from a tablet above your table. This is not a new concept in St Louis. Years ago, we had a sushi buffet on conveyor belt in Ballwin. Price seems reasonable until you realize that it’s for 4 pieces of Maki on each plate, that’s half of a roll. The orange plate sushi are fancier Maki, but $7 for 4 pieces, that’s $16 for a full roll. HOWEVER, you get to try many different kinds of sushi so that’s good. Speaking of selections… they did not have a lot of choices. The same 4 to 5 selections keep coming around on the conveyor belt. It’s a fun experience but the sushi are generic. It’s as good as Dierbergs sushi so by no mean that it’s badthat means it’s bad. It’s “just okay” This is like the Texas Roadhouse of sushi.
Tip… don’t sit at the end of the conveyor belt! The good stuff will get picked clean before you!
We kept an open-mind, knowing that it’s their first week open and there may be kinks to work out but our experience was seamless and fun. We look forward to returning when they have their full menu available!
The atmosphere was cozy but modern, making it a fun spot whether you’re dining solo or with friends. Everything felt well-organized and clean, and the whole experience was smooth from start to finish.
This is the kind of sushi spot you come to “just try” and end up planning your next visit before you even leave. Definitely a new favorite and highly recommend.
Save your money, dont recommend.
Came in, joined the waitlist with a 30 minute wait, and when we were sat down at our table the table was still sticky and had crumbs from the previous guests. We asked staff to clean it, which they did, and then we started ordering. The ginger served to us was old, and theres little to no variety in the rolls. If the sushi has cucumber on the menu picture, dont expect it. It wont be there. The quality of the fish (and sushi as a whole) is inconsistent and subpar. I was disappointed because they advertise themselves as “Authentic Japanese” and that is NOT accurate at all. Also be prepared to dine next to a lot of dirty tables that no one is bothering to bus (even on a somewhat steady Saturday night). Staff is not using sani-buckets for their wash cloths as well, btw. I understand conveyor belt sushi isn’t meant to be a mind-blowing experience, but when you order your sushi from the kitchen and you get an inconsistently prepared roll that’s missing the ingredients included in the description (avocado or in our case: cucumber!), what is the reason? I don’t understand how such a simple concept can be so half-assed and lacking. We did bring some of our concerns up to the manager and not only were they not helpful, they didn’t seem to see what was wrong with serving discolored/old ginger or that it’s misleading to show cucumber in the description/picture and then to exclude it just because. I’ve managed restaurants before and if you receive a subpar ingredient, you can reject it and even go somewhere in person if you need to restock urgently.
To the restaurant management: Do better! You should be ashamed of yourself, please learn how to run a restaurant you can be proud of. The quality tonight was embarassing and that “authentic japanese” is a standard you’re clearly not prepared to emulate at this time.
To prospective customers: Save your money, dont recommend. Grocery store sushi is better value than here.
Even on their very first day of soft opening, the team showed strong professionalism and great potential. You can feel they are already fine-tuning the details. We’re definitely looking forward to coming back to try more items. Wishing them great success!
The staff was friendly, and the food was tasty. It’s such a fun concept. You order from the iPads and can also take food off the conveyor belt. We did some of both. We didn’t love everything, but some of that could be preference.
The Delmar roll was great … Would recommend that for sure.
