While the Philly cheese steak was fine, the salad my wife ordered (Traditional salad ) was in poor condition the greens were witted, discolored, and tasted spoiled. It didn’t seem fresh or safe to eat. I hope Troy’s improves its quality control because this shouldn’t happen with as simple as a salad.
I picked up the meals at 6:50pm, when we got home they close at 7:pm , when I called on Monday I was told the Kitchen Manager (Troy’s daughter) said she watched that salad being made, we use tri colored lettuce, it’s not spoiled, and we’re not giving you anything. All I wanted was a refund. I got an email from Troy stating if i were nicer, he would refund the money.
Its painful to harm any business. I worked for Sysco and this hurts me, never want to harm anybody.

After seeing tons of ads on Facebook and looking at other reviews, I was very excited to try Troy’s. Some friends and I decided to try it for lunch today, after getting past that this place used to be a funeral home, seeing it transformed into a sandwich shop was impressive. Our waitress was super nice and on top of it. Took our order promptly and got our drinks right away. I ordered the Spicy Italian with everything after seeing pictures of it online. Needless to say the sandwich was horrible. All I could taste was vinegar, not the meats, tomatoes, onions, pepperoncinis, bread or cheese. After looking at the sandwich I figured out why. Barely got any meat, tomatoes sliced so thin you wouldn’t taste them. Barely any cheese, 3 small onions and a half of a pepperoncini. Absolutely horrible sandwich, and I wanted it to be good. My Dad got the pizza sandwich, which to be honest a highschool lunch lady could make one better. The only good things were the cherry coke, spring salad and the waitress. For the price and amount of food, I would have rather had Subway, and that ain’t saying much.

I will say I am not from Waterloo, I live about an hour north of Chicago, and this is a hidden gem.

I would not consider Waterloo an exclusively good food town but it seems like the more often I come here the more I am pleasantly surprised with the food scene.

I can’t really compare this to any food chain sandwich (including Potbelly and Jersey Mike’s). This is a very traditional, but unique hoagie. I had the Italian topped with cotto salami, genoa salami, pepperoni, banana peppers, mozz, and a nice mountain of spring mix. The bread was also to die for, soft and fluffy yet absorbed the meat juices and didn’t get soggy, it kept a good crisp. This tasted homemade, it reminded me of something I would make at home on a night that I wanted to foodie out.

This in my eyes, is a gourmet hoagie with exceptional meat.

Waterloo residents, you got something good here, go and support this local gem. I only have one of these shops near my house and I go constantly. Take advantage of something that seldom come around to smaller towns.

Had an appointment in Waterloo today and saw Troy’s on our way home. I had seen a story about the restaurant on the news when they first opened so we decided to check it out. I’ll be honest and admit that, in the current economy, my wife and I don’t dine out as frequently as we used to. So being a bit more budget conscious, we decided to split a philly cheese steak and get an extra side.
I used to think it was funny that my grandparents used to go to McDonald’s on occasion and split a hamburger (along with free coffee for seniors) as a special treat
Now I understand
Troy’s Philly was definitely big enough to satisfy both of our appetites. And we both thought it tasted amazing! Troy’s obviously uses fresh, high quality ingredients. The amount of meat, cheese, and garnish was perfectly balanced.
We got the macaroni salad and a bag of chips. The chips were tasty. To be honest, the mac salad wasn’t my favorite. It wasn’t bad, just not what I’m used to tasting in more traditional mac salad (I guess I’m stuck in my ways )
The staff was friendly and everyone seemed to have great attitudes.
Troy’s is our new favorite place in Waterloo and we look forward to trying something else next time. Maybe the chicken bacon ranch

Today was our first visit to Troy’s Sandwiches in Waterloo, Iowa. Our visit was long over due. Our daughter and her husband hvmave told us how good Troy’s was. Other friends and co-workers had told us the same. Today I took the day off and we headed to Troy’s for lunch. Wow! What an amazingly flavorful hand crafted sandwich they make. We had a Grande Papa and a Philly Cheese-steak sandwich and split them so we could each sample both sandwiches. My spouse had a side of the house-made pasta salad and I had the coleslaw. My spouse loved thr house-made pasta salad. The coleslaw was equally as good. The sandwiches were amazing. The sandwich bread is flavorful and perfectly buttered and toasted. The Grande Papa sandwich was full of flavor, many different flavors making it our favorite of the day. But that is not saying the Philly Cheese-steak sandwich is not amazing, it was. The steak is thinly sliced and extremely tender and well prepared. Again, both sandwiches were very well prepared. The waitress was friendly, helpful and attentive to our needs and the needs of others around us. The owner was present greeting all the customers and stopped by each table to ensure their food and experience was spot on. Upon leaving we ran into the owner again and he again asked if the food met our expectations, which answered “Yes, amazing sandwiches and sides”. The owner shared they are working on adding and icecream parlor hopefully in around 6 months, expanding the dining area for Troy’s Sandwiches, and adding a Steakhouse in about one year. This is exciting news for Waterloo, Iowa, and the Cedar Valley. This business is locally family owned and we encourage others to support them by stopping in for a sandwich, hamburger or other menu item. Can’t wait to come back and try a burger and other sandwiches. We hear the Meatball sandwich is amazing!!!

Me and my daughter have heard amazing things about this place and we finally decided to go there tonight. We were absolutely blown away! The place was packed with people and yet we still got our food within a reasonable amount of time. The server, Tayden, was so sweet, respectful, and was very good about checking in on our table. The restaurant was clean and had a great atmosphere and vibe to it! The best part though was our food, I got a pastrami sandwich, which was full of flavor and even though I got a half, I was still full by the end of our meal. They make sure you get your money’s worth in toppings. My daughter got a grande papa which she was more than happy with. She said there were so many flavors and that it was hands down the best sandwhich she’s ever had! The chips we got were crisp and had a wide variety of unique flavors. Our drinks, iced tea and sweet tea, were just how we wanted them. We will definitely be coming back to this establishment, it is 100% worth anyone’s time and money!

The #1 is my go to with a gluten free bun! Troy’s can’t guarantee 100% gluten free but i’m just sensitive to gluten so I don’t have an issues. Always a very meaty sandwich. The chips are also very good. I love the dill pickle chips. Staff is super friendly and always fun to chat with while waiting for your food. Very fresh food!

Service was prompt and friendly, my server was very helpful even bringing me small samples of the pasta and macaroni salads, so I could check out the differences. The seating areas are bright and sunny with large windows. My sandwich and salad choice were excellent.

Tried Troy’s sandwiches for the first time. Spicy Italian was delicious! Loaded with meat. I didn’t like the strawberry Italian soda but the vanilla one tasted good, got vanilla one for My son. The pasta was very good. Will definitely come back to try other food. The hours they are opened don’t work with my schedule I work 3rd shift so hard to find time to come back. My bf works 7am to 5pm.
