I love this bakery. They have Dutch Letters (a pastry filled with almond paste – delicious! ), beautifully decorated & yummy sugar cookies, donuts, different types of sweet rolls, scones, creme horns, coffee cakes… so many goodies! The employees are so friendly.

Make sure to ask what is fresh. Since this is a small bakery they don’t have a lot of things cooking at once. We got a Dutch letter, a cherry donut home, a butter pecan sweet bun and a chocolate Bismarck and a strawberry rhubarb bread. The letter was delicious and the ends are caramelized for a crunchy sweetness. The cherry donut hole, was like a glazed bready maraschino cherry. The Bismarck had a cream that was like boiled frosting (marshmallow texture with a frosting taste). The let down was the sweet bun, but they did warn me that it had been sitting out for a while. The bread was probably the worst strawberry rhubarb pie I’ve ever had, but then again it was bread with small tastes of pie throughout which is kinda interesting.

We were told to go here as there’s a more popular bakery in town but they said the Dutch letters are their favorite here. It was Pella’s holiday weekend so there was a lot of people. The line was long and I wish they had more than 2-3 people working behind the counter because the line went extremely slow. But I’m sure on a different weekend when there isn’t so much action, it’s probably faster. I love the vibe and I couldn’t take as many pictures because there were so many people and I wanted to respect their privacy. I’m glad there’s more competition in town for a great bakery. Both can succeed! Their decorated sugar cookies were amazing!!

I’ve been coming here since I was a kid. Every time I’m in town, I make a stop! My favorites are the bismarks, Dutch letters, and frosted cookies. The bismarks are so flavorful, friends and family members ask me to bring some back home with me. Overall, I would highly recommend trying out some of these bakery goods!

Best Dutch letters in town. Everything is fresh and delicious, unlike the other bakery. I bought Dutch letters from both Vander Ploegs and Jaarsma. Vander Ploegs came out WAY ahead: fresh and flaky vs. stale, and the filling is more almond-y plus they just look nicer with their slightly different shape and sparkling sugar.

Their white walnut bars were plumper and fresher as well. Have decorated sugar cookies, a nice selection of bars, muffins and pastries. The shop has been remodeled and it’s really beautiful and clean. There are even stools by the window to sit and eat your pastry.

Went to visit pella with my girlfriend and son and our friend and I was impressed on the different pastries especially the conchas as they were very soft! Will definitely love to visit again and also the service is very nice!

This was a great bakery. They had a good variety of various pastries, all freshly made.

Our cheddar jalapeño sausage kolaches were recently made before ordering them and were delicious. Just the right amount of spice with a rather light bread surrounding the meat.

From the local Dutch letters to filled croissants, fried fruit pies and cannolis, there were plenty of options to choose from.

I was very satisfied with my apple cinnamon scone. Something light, fluffy, and flavorful.

Between the excellent pastries and friendly service, I will definitely visit this bakery again when I have the chance.

Almond Marzipan Heaven! I was walking through the Des Moines Downtown Farmers Market, and saw these pastries in the shape of an S called a Dutch Letter. I am so glad I asked about them. I was told they had almonds inside, so I had to give it a try.

My goodness was this the best thing ever. It was filled with a sticky marzipan and was absolutely delicious!!! Better than any croissant I’ve found.

Their almond bars were so good!!! I wish I had gotten another one. The person behind the counter was helpful as it was our first time and she helped us pick unique options.

The bakery is clean and looks like it’s newly renovated. The atmosphere is not friendly but the goodies look so good. We where trying to have something different than the usual treats and we were not disappointed of the detour. The goodies are delicious.
