For starters, being a new resident within their second year in San Mateo & now attending CSM for some courses I must say how pleased I am to find a gem of a restaurant such as Shiki. For it’s convenience and location being an approximate 12 minute walk from campus I intend on visiting again on special occasion.

The service from staff was direct and accomadating as they allowed my cousin and I to enjoy our dinner over the course of our visit which spanned for almost more than an hour. This alone sets the tone of the atmosphere as the restaurant is moderately quaint with enough space to host a party of 4-6 comfortably according to the layout and tableing I could vaguely go over again in my mind.

Now, for the food commentary. The chirashi was a great choice for the night!A well displayed array of fresh fish placed on top of a balance of light seasoning topped sushi rice & garnish of thin clear noodles that could’ve been substituted from tamago kinshi. The hamachi was the highlight due to the robust sweetness that was propelled through the natural texture of the fish. The maguro being a typical favorite of mine did not disappoint at all!

Overall, the service was great as well as the atmosphere being perfect for intimate and relaxed occasions with loved ones. Not only was the chirasu fresh but the pork tonkatsu paired with a beautifully chopped sweet citrus fruit on the side among a fresh romaine leaflet embedded underneath was simple and clean. Thinly sliced and fried to a crunch with ease.

Thank you to the wonderful staff employed at Shiki! I most definitely want to thank the chef & kitchen crew for the delicious meals made tonight. Blessings!

Stumbled upon this sushi place while in the area and it was one of the best I’ve ever been to! Got a variety of menu items and each one was absolutely amazing. Their portions are huge and the flame roll we got was on fire, made for a cute picture and video.

This review is not about food service. Service has been top performance!
Rather feedback about customer relations. I wish this can be more positive.
I had an unfortunate experience as a super regular customer of many years.

I sat at the sushi bar and the owner was making sushi that night for three nights. I was not greeted nor even acknowledged!!
A customer sits directly 2ft in front our your sushi station and you do not even acknowledge? To me this was disrespectful as a regular customer or if I was not regular.

By the way; this happened THREE times and on the third time I as the customer had initiated a greeting. Too busy to take 3 seconds to say Hi?

I never felt welcomed. I should have left but I stayed as a customer who appreciated the service staff.

Note: In Japan, sushi chefs will always acknowledge or smile at respected customers who support their restaurant.
Actually this is simple basic human respect.

Summary:
Shiki needs major customer service adjustments.

I ordered from DoorDash and I was more than halfway through my salad when I found a thick BLACK hair even though my hair is light and thin. I am absolutely disgusted. The food was mediocre at best and the hair made it even worse.

Food here is great. Best agedashi tofu I’ve ever had, and I love the red evil roll! Spicy tuna rolls are fresh and delicious. The guys working to the sushi are super nice, and if you’re at the bar, put out good food really quickly.

They do roll out this cart to buss the tables. Clanging, banging a cart right next to people eating, with rags and cleaning products hanging off it. Just…super odd.

But if you can have a laugh about the cart, the food is totally worth it.

Right after I got in I realized this restaurant was run by Chinese, so I didn’t expect much. But they definitely surprised me. All my sushi were very fresh, and they serve the agedashi tofu with soup/sauce on the side, which is super thoughtful!

Great little place. Been here twice. The chefs greet you as you are walking in. I didnt notice it because of a loud diesel passing by out of place but the chefs greet everyone as the come in, even the obvious deliveryman that was lost. I should know by now, this is just a standard in japanese culture and i should keep this knowledge with me when walking into Japanese establishments. The environment is nice. Feels a little cluttered but i definitely dont sense it when having a seat. I love looking at the booth side. I believe it is called “Izakaya” decor. It is a cozy feel, especially in booth. The Bathroom is western style, modern, and clean.

The hostess is very sweet and endeering, always smiling. I ordered a sushi lunch combo and very well worth the price. Along with miso and salad you get to choose two fish items, which i went with salmon nigiri and spicy tuna roll. The rice portion was standard, the salmon was doubled and doubled again. Ill attach a photo but you know how other sushi places charge six bucks for two pieces? This place basically gives you 8 pieces of fish as it basically covers the rice entirely. Again, the rice was a normal portion. The spicy tuna looks like it was handled a little too heavily but the taste was there.

Is this something I can always expect? Probably not, just extra salmon maybe paired with an aggressive sushi chef for the day, but I am coming back for sure!

Nice little sushi restaurant with about 40 seats. The fish was fresh, and their various rolls and sashimi pieces were quite tasty. We just found the amount of food could be a bit more. For example, their California roll consisted of only 6 pieces.
The staff were pleasant, but the service was quite slow. In fairness, every seat was taken, and a few guests were waiting to be seated, so they were quite busy.
Overall, for the quality of their food, the price was fair.
We would definitely go again.

I stopped by Shiki by accident, and was pleasantly surprised by their excellent sushi and service. It is a tiny place with a cozy atmosphere and outstanding food. Will certainly come back for more and bring the family there soon.

Very nice neighborhood Japanese restaurant run by Chinese. Food is pretty authentic and good. We’ve been coming here for about 10 years whenever we are in the neighborhood. There is another restaurant in San Mateo near Whole foods. I prefer this one.
