~ Hundreds of years of tradition is in every dish that Blue Toba offers. With spices Chef Birong brings back from Indonesia, he imbues not only the alchemy that is inherent in Indonesian cooking, but also its depth of culture & heart ~
In August 2022, Blue Toba expanded to a downtown Ashland location after 8 years in a tiny ‘hole-in-the-wall.’ You might see old photos and menus and an old logo from our previous location, or even when we first reopened in our new location when searching through the photos here, and other places on the internet. Our website is the only place for all things updated & current. There you will see our beautifully expanded space, and the expanded deliciousness of what we offer now. Tues-Sat Lunch & Dinner.

This was our first time eating at Blue Toba, my parents and I loved it! My mom got their special which was a seasonal soup as her meal and it was exactly what she was craving, as the hostess described it, “a hug in a mug” for this rainy day. My dad and I got the Ayam Bakar, a grilled chicken dish that was well made and so flavorful just as described in the menu. My younger brother (who’s a picky eater) devoured the Mie Goreng fried noodle dish before any of us finished ours
Their black rice pudding dessert was delicious! I highly recommend giving this place a try if you’d like to try Indonesian food! The service we received was warm and welcoming, we will definitely come back again!

I posted a Yelp review before posting this one and received a response from the owner filled with no openness to feedback, pride, and passive aggressiveness like a child. If you look at other 1 star reviews you will see the same.. the owner barks at anyone posting about their unsatisfactory experience. It is not a professional practice at all but I will not let that effect my actual review which continues…
Upon entering the restaurant I was happy to see the beautiful masks hung up on the walls, I was sat immediately and my waitress was very friendly. I ordered the opor and gulai with no chicken or tofu. Both dishes were $26.50 each. Upon receiving the food I was shocked at how tiny the portions were. These dishes were money grabs at the highest level. They claim the ingredients are made fresh but the vegetables tasted like they were frozen and thawed out instead. The dishes had nothing inherently special about them in terms of the tastes. For how small the simple dishes were (which were vegetables rice and a sauce), I expected flavors that would clearly impress me and I’d be very happy with. I was not impressed although they were not bad. The small portion sizes are the main reason for this poor review. I understand how these negatively impact a business but giving reataurants honest feedback is also proper practice. I hope the owner has the awareness to realize that negative reviews aren’t just “crazy people complaining”( I saw the owner comment on someone else’s poor review saying that they watched a video explaining the kind of people who post negative reviews, and the owner said how basically they’re all sick and deranged people. See other 1 star reviews on Yelp and google. Quite a foolish and immature way for a business owner to react to poor feedback from what their reataurant is providing to people coming in the reataurant and hoping for a good experience. Due to seeing the owners reply to my Yelp review, and then reading I’m not close to the only customer to receive unprofessional snarky responses to our feedback. There is absolutely no chance I give them another chance. I hope the owner is nicer to the employees but based on another review I read I have a feeling that isn’t the case :/

This one felt like a sleeper. We went on a whim after a long day and it ended up being one of the better meals we’ve had since moving. Got the beef rendang and it was tender, spicy, and super aromatic. Staff was kind. It’s small, so maybe call ahead.

Dropped in early in the dinner hours, and we were promptly seated. The menu seems streamlined, with excellent Indonesian dishes that one might call classics. The rendang was a surprise for its tenderness and multiple flavors within. The soup was another highlight. Staff was friendly, and the service timely. For downtown Ashland, prices are more than reasonable. Looking forward to trying more dishes soon!

Our whole dining experience was a series of delights, and I’ll be dreaming of this place until we return to Ashland someday. The Rendang was a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth, nuanced explosion of flavor; the mocktails were bright and refreshing; the ambiance was soothing and full of charm; and everyone who works there was kind and quick to offer helpful and intriguing information. I loved getting to learn about the ceremonial yellow rice that is served here, and it reinforced the feeling that, in dining here, you have been luckily invited to a ceremony or a special family meal. This place is a gift and a gem – I’ll be back as soon as possible to try everything on the menu!

EDIT: We came back a few days later, early in the evening. Everything was great! We had nice cocktails, the Rendang was delicious, and my soup was “a hug in a bowl”, as promised. Also the service was very fast, and the food very filling. Show up hungry!

I am a fairly well traveled 32 year old and have to say this restaurant is in my top 5 of all time. I don’t ever write reviews but feel compelled too by how good the Rendang dish, service, and atmosphere was. I literally got it 2 nights ina row. Stop looking on Google maps, go here

We are so excited to have found this gem. It will be our number one dinner stop whenever we are in Ashland from now on. We loved the food and drinks, the calming atmosphere and the attentive enthusiastic service. Our favorite foods from this visit were the Bakwan Jagung (corn fritters), the Mie Goreng ( fried noodles) and the Black Rice Pudding. The cocktails were also not to be missed. As a bonus we arrived at 4:30 for discounted drinks and appetizers (the Bakwan Jagung) from the happy hour menu. The Bersama Kita was like an aromatic spiced Manhattan and the Matahariku resembled a mai tai with a hint of banana. Both drinks were great but the drink that blew our socks off was kind of a creative project between us and the bartender. It was the Coconut Bajigur, a great non alcoholic option, but with a shot of Flor de Cana rum added. Wow! Like a tropical eggnog but so much better. One of the best cocktails we have ever had. We highly recommend this restaurant for drinks and happy hour and for dinner.

This place is outstanding and definitely a must for southern Oregon. We ordered 3 dishes and an appetizer and each one was tasty in a different way. Can’t wait to go back!! Well worth the prices bc of the spices and time it takes to make the dishes!! It’s also cute inside and the staff is so helpful.
