Votre maison loin de chez vous! Who are we? In short, our aim is to serve French comfort food made with fresh, local, seasonal and organic produce. We also trace our produce back to its source so that we always know where, when and how it originated. Although living and cooking in SA for many years Parisian chef Julien Debray never lost his passion for the cuisine he grew up with. Now the time has come to share that passion with you. Here we don’t do what’s fashionable. Here we just do what we do. Come and join us for lunch or diner. We will have something for everyone’s liking but don’t look for an English breakfast, Bobotie or Melktert on our menu. We are a French Brasserie after all. A votre service!

On a boiling hot Swartland day, when the thermometer topped 40 degs, the cool terrace with the misters was just the place to be! Love the blackboard menu, and the French styled menu. We asked the waiter what to have and straight away he said the fresh tuna from Cape Point. Cooked to perfection, seared on the outside and perfectly rare in the middle.
This restaurant isn’t to be missed when you’re in the Swartland

Besides creativity and quality, what makes a excellent restaurant is its consistency… Au Bouchon never disappoints.
Always highly recommended.

Our evening was faultless. A night away from the hustle and fancy of Cape Town. A balmy Swartland Spring evening meant we got to sit on the stoep (verandah) Parisian style. With less feet traffic to watch. But the food was a very good rendition of chef Julien’s roots. Excellent terrine and the Moules was perfect with a lovely light white wine sauce. There is a very good winelist with great selection of Swartland wines but also including interesting examples from the rest of the Cape. Superb bistro.

We dined at Au Bouchon Rouge Brasserie on our first night in Riebeek-Kasteel this past May. We called to book a table just an hour before arriving, and from the moment we walked in, we were completely charmed.

The brasserie is located right on the main road, and by night it truly feels like you’ve stepped into a small village in France. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and unmistakably French—absolutely delightful.

The menu, which includes some classic French options, was very appealing with a great selection of starters, mains, and desserts. We started with the snails, followed by beef cuts for our main course, and finished off with a tarte tatin. Every dish was beautifully prepared and full of flavor.

The wine list is extensive, with a strong focus on local Swartland wines. We were guided in our choice and were not disappointed—great recommendations all around.

Service was top-notch: professional, attentive, and genuinely friendly. We felt truly welcomed. A lovely touch was the owner stopping by for a chat—two Frenchies crossing paths in a small South African village… of course we talked about food!

Will we be back? Absolutely… and we did, the very next day.

You will not find anything like this wonderful restaurant anywhere in the Western Cape. Jack is so passionate about his incredible wine list. Even though he is an absolute wine expert, he was quite happy to recommend some excellent wines that would suit our modest pocket. The food, service and ambiance were second to none. Very well worth the drive! Thank you N & C

A group of six of us ate here last night and it was the best French Bistro meal I’ve had outside of Paris! Literally can’t recommend it highly enough. The starters, mains and desserts were all delicious. Wine list was excellent and the service top notch. Will definitely come back.

Second visit, just as amazing as the first!**

I returned for another fantastic experience, and it did not disappoint. The food was outstanding, and the service matched it perfectly.

To start, I had the springbok terrine—delicious and beautifully presented. For the main course, the springbok shank was tender and full of flavor. And for dessert? The apple tarte tatin was the perfect finish, living up to the high standard set by the rest of the meal.

Can’t wait to come back!
