He suggested the paté, French onion soup, duck, and chicken and we loved every single item. He was great and we would for sure go again!
SUGGESTIONS:
1. Parking is street parking, so give yourself a few extra mins to get to the restaurant
2. Get reservations
3. Attire is pretty relaxed however the space is a bit more high-end. We wore a suit and nice cocktail dress, but others were in more business casual or golf casual
4. Try something new. This was a very flavorful environment for trying something we’ve never had before and we loved it.
Our server’s engaging personality set the perfect tone for the evening. He even surprised us with an extra plate of broccolini, noticing my admiring glance upon entering the restaurant. Now that’s service!
We shared several dishes between three, including the decadent beef tartare, melt-in-your-mouth escargot, and a rich onion soup. The main courses were equally impressive: a perfectly cooked cod, a divine medium-rare filet mignon, and a half chicken with crispy skin that brought all the flavors together beautifully. The cod, though smaller, packed a punch of flavor, while the filet was absolutely divine.
While the price point might be a bit higher (we ended up averaging $122 per person with tip), the combination of exceptional flavors and attentive service justifies it. If you’re looking for a memorable French dining experience in Denver, Jacques is definitely worth the splurge.
===================
Met one of the owners shortly before opening and was really excited to try Jacques. Gave them some time to settle in and despite being open for over three months, there were a lot of small things that detracted from our experience.
First, let me start by acknowledging the staff was wonderful – educated on the food, upbeat attitudes despite how busy it was, and made it a fun experience. The atmosphere was intimate but lively – could be a great spot for a date night.
Ordering is where we started to run into issues. Jacques does not allow you to order apps separately from mains. Typically, we order apps with drinks so we can munch while deciding what to order for mains. Did not think much of it.
For drinks I ordered a house gin martini with a twist and my partner ordered red wine. The wine was fairly bland, bad choice on our end. My martini was delicious, beautifully botanic, waiter said they use a French gin.
The appetizers were wonderful! Highly recommend the baguette w/butter, both are made in-house and the baguette was sourdough with a beautiful crumb (we ended up ordering two of these). The beets were an underdog, much better than expected.
Despite ordering apps and mains at the same time, there was around a 40-50 minute lull between the apps and mains arriving at our table. Realized this is probably why they have you order them together.
The owner had specifically mentioned trying the burger, so for mains we had the Jacques Burger and Half Chicken.
Half Chicken was perfectly moist with a crunchy skin sat atop a thin bed of choucroute and apples. The chicken was delicious but I was expecting either more on the plate or at least more connection to the rest of the plate. There were literally four or five small pieces of apple and a thin layer of the choucroute, neither of which really added anything to the chicken.
The Jacques Burger is not worth the money. Ordered chef’s recommended temp, which was medium rare. One patty came out medium and the other well done. I believe the bun was brioche which sounds good on paper but personally I think brioche is too soft to support the weight of a burger and, as brioche does, it inevitably fell apart. Overall the burger was really dry and lacked any discernible flavor. In sharp contrast, the french fries were far too salty.
Lastly, we had the Chocolate Chip Cookie. Honestly, another underdog on the menu. Highly recommend.
When the check arrived, there were a few more small quirks. The cookie is listed on the menu at $3 but is on the receipt for $4 – did not even mention it to the waiter but was another small thing. However, below the $24.00 for two Martinis there was another wayward $7.00 with no descriptor. The waiter explained this was for extra gin to make the martinis. I think it was actually an upcharge for the French Gin, despite asking for house gin. Ignoring the rational, there should never be a blank line item on a check.
Considering my favorite things on the menu were some of the cheapest, I do not think the price aligns with the experience. The many small things really detracted from what could be an awesome experience. I hope they continue to improve and work out these kinks.
Jacques brings classic French bistro dishes in an elevated preparation and presentation.
Everything we had was delicious. We will come back!
Onto the food, which was excellent. We started with the French onion soup and pate. The French onion soup was divine. Sometimes French onion soup has way too much cheese and is very heavy and this was not the case at all. It was delectable and complex with a hint of sherry or wine incorporated. The pate was delicious as well with the bread perfectly toasted and fresh.
For our main meal we had the steak frites, beets and tempura mushrooms. My husband said the steak was perfectly served medium rare and the fries were a great complement. I personally would have liked a bit of rosemary included on the fries but they were still very tasty. The beets were a pleasant surprise. They were refreshing and the goat cheese sauce was a perfect complement. My only regret was not having more of the bread from the pate to sop up the sauce!
Our entire meal was accompanied with really great cocktails. We had a combination of mezcal old fashioned and mezcal negronis. The cocktails were a real standout. Great presentation and quality and we would come back just to have those at the bar.
We ended our meal with the creme brulee and wow oh wow was that a great choice. It was a special on the menu and we hope it becomes a staple.
Overall, we loved our time at Jacques and very much look forward to returning.
