If you are looking for an authentic, “if you know, you know” dining experience in South Minneapolis, El Travieso Taqueria on Xerxes Avenue is a must-visit. This isn’t your typical walk-in storefront; part of the charm is the unique entrance where you actually have to find the doorbell to get in. It immediately sets the tone for a meal that feels personal, private, and incredibly welcoming.
Once you’re inside, the atmosphere is defined by the really kind and sweet folks working there. The service feels like being invited into someone’s home, which makes the food taste even better. Speaking of the food, the green chicken enchiladas are a total knockout—perfectly balanced and packed with flavor. To start, their chips and salsa are on point, providing that essential crunch and kick to wake up your palate.
If you aren’t in the mood for enchiladas, the quesadillas are great, and the nachos are a solid, satisfying choice for the table. To wash it all down, they keep the cold brews ready, and for those looking for something a bit stronger, they offer a decent selection of tequila and mezcal. Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer willing to hunt for the doorbell, El Travieso delivers a curated, heartfelt Mexican meal that stands out from the crowd. It’s the kind of place you’ll find yourself returning to again and again.

As a chef myself, not some Martha Stewart wannabe chef, this place is great. I split seven tacos with my brother, two margaritas, and a guac and chips. It was amazing and I can’t wait to come back. To those saying it’s bland, did you only eat the paper bag the chips came in? To those complaining about size, you clearly don’t understand food cost and mark up on properly flavored food. The tacos are more than enough and sized perfectly to get a few and experience the variety of flavors. El Traviseo, keep doing what you’re doing. I love it.

Second time here and I had forgotten how amazing the food is here! If you haven’t been, you need to go. Sure, maybe $7 for an Inquieto Taco Arabes seems like a lot, but it isn’t. They are that good. And where I get 3 street tacos at most placed, I only need two of these. Although I wish my belly was big enough to eat 5 they are THAT GOOD! Plus, they have a solid patio and decent beer to help enjoy the meal.

Tasted good and everything seemed fresh and it was fairly quick. Good place for a quick bite. Wish they had some “taco Tuesday” deals though.

this is not an amazing place. i ordered ceviche and it was TINY. I PAYED 14 dollars for A CEVICHE THAT LOOKS LIKE IT JUST CAME OUT OF THE LAKE. THE APPETIZERS IS JUST CHIPS. no salsa. THIS IS SUPPOSE TO BE A MEXICAN RESTAURANT NOT A CAUSASIAN RESTAURANT.

We WANT to love this neighborhood place. Location is wonderfully walkable. Interior is fun and the patio is perfect. Handmade tortillas, chips and guacamole all excellent. But after 6 visits, we have found nothing to like on the menu. Chicken is dry. Vegetarian entrees (while we appreciate the nod) are numerous but pair awkward flavors. One dish throws together bacon, hot dog slices and iceberg lettuce with a theater of other meat and mush.
Consider: A couple great entrees can sometimes be better than the many. We believe this little spot can and will find its niche. But not yet!
