The bento box is amazing value and absolutely packed with good stuff — sashimi, tonkatsu, tatsuta, teriyaki beef, agedashi tofu and more. The Yosenabe is loaded with prawns, fish, squid, scallops and super-silky tofu in a really tasty broth.
We love their agedashi tofu — smoky and light, with dancing bonito flakes on top. Cold beer, good house chardonnay – very satisfying!
Come back. Beautiful food. I love the house bento box. Will definitely keep coming. 🙂 thank you for amazing food
Atmosphere – this is a small restaurant with lots of tables and not too much room to move about. The curtains above the windows need attention.
Still a good restaurant with lovely food.
We order food a la carte and we tried a few mains and entrees. We loved how flavourful everything was. The waitress made our experience pleasant.
Okonomiyaki – a personal favourite the version here is as a seafood pancake which is thin and served with BBQ sauce, kewpie mayo, and Benito flakes. Pretty tasty and a nice start to the meal.
Kaiso Salad – I got this seaweed salad to provide some balance against the mains and it’s a very simple but tasty dish. Refreshing, slightly chewy texture, sweet with the dressing and yet a bit acidic, this helps cut through the richness of the pancake and the buttery sauce in the seafood in the teppanyaki.
Kaisen Teppanyaki – prawns, scallop, fish, squid cooked in lemon butter sauce served on a sizzling plate
A lovely medally of well cooked seafood presented sizzling as per the menu description and served with veggies. The butter sauce is very subtle, the ingredients are cooked in it but there is very little of the sauce on the plate itself. Solid tasty meal, this was more than enough for me and had to pass on the dessert section I was eyeing!
Visited on a few more occasions for takeaway, this time for the Atami Kaisen Bento
A medally of seafood in a traditional bento
– Sashimi: 3 tender slices of salmon enjoyed with soy sauce and wasabi
– Deep fried oyster: so delicious, love the crunchy crumb and creamy oyster
– Calamari Rings: a very blonde batter, needed more cooking to bring that deep golden brown colour, however, the squid is super tender and is enjoyable
– Tempura prawn: deeper colour in the batter but needed a little more cooking. Nice crunch of the batter surrounding the tender delicious prawn
– Takoyaki: I love this dish and surprised to see that in the bento box. Tender chunk of squid, creamy filling and a lovely golden brown exterior. Yummmm.
– Teriyaki fish: tender fish with a lovely teriyaki glaze that is not too salty and has the just the right touch of sweetness
Enjoyed with a tempura zucchini slice, salad and rice topped with black & white sesame seeds. Tasty meal, love the variety.
Also tried the Atami House bento box which comes with:
– delicious salmon sashimi
– lightly battered deep fried tofu which is yum
– delicious crunchy deep fried tatsuta-age chicken with a blob of mayo for extra enjoyment
– lightly crumbed crunchy tonkatsu
– crunchy harumaki (Japanese spring roll)
– tasty tender teriyaki beef
– steamed rice with black and white sesame seeds and perfect for mopping up the teriyaki sauce
– salad for freshness to round out the meal

Unfortunately, there was a preponderance of bean shoots served with every meal – we’ve never seen so many outside of a green grocer.
Service was prompt and friendly, however we weren’t offered the menu to choose desert which we would’ve chosen if we’d be given the option – we were just provided the receipt.
FYI – I’m rating this as a surburban, Japanese, family style restaurant, not as a fancy, high-end place because it doesn’t pretend to be not should it be rated along those lines.
