Full disclosure, we are on a sacred, holy quest (think Blues Brothers mission from God but with burgers) to find the best hamburgers in the Midwest – a journey that has only started in January.
Cosmo is… not that. It wasn’t bad; it was more practice to make sure we understand truly what makes a burger good or bad.
The good: greasy, messy, smash burgers with grilled onions. Yum! The assortment of add ons was simple but sufficient, and you can get fries or tots. If I was partying late in downtown and needed something so soak up the booze, it would pass. And it’s a hip environment with great service. The other patrons were also generously tattooed miscreants like myself, so I felt at home in it’s hip-diner vibe atmosphere. And the tater tots were solid, much better than the fries. I ordered a double a gooey fried egg and bacon – solid choices.
The bad: Burgers were pretty basic without adding a bunch of extra treats. Also, they only have American cheese – no cheddar, Swiss, gouda, or pepper jack. Simple is good, but that borders on hipster fastfood. The French fries were basic at best, nothing special.
Overall evaluations:
The 13 year old: 6.5 out of 10. Tasted, but she’s had better.
Grandma: 4 out if 10. “This tastes like a McDonalds Quarter Pounder.”
Wife: 4.5 out of 10. “Who only uses American cheese?”
Me: 6 out if 10. I like the simple, straightforward concept. But if you’re going to do simple, it better be spectacular. It was fine, but it’s nothing I’d be eager to go back to.

This little smash burger place was worth a try. We brought our daughter here for her birthday. She wanted to try the smash burger with peanut butter (goober burger). We didn’t notice on the menu where it said goob is peanut butter and jalapeño jam, slightly disappointed about that. We tried the double and it was so good, flavorful and the right amount of crisp on the edges. The fries are really good too and you get a lot, might as well add a milkshake to top it off! They have a cool retro style vibe with a fairly simple menu.

This place is confusing. Apparently their location in Waldo is online order only, even for dine in. This location is the opposite. Nowhere on their ordering website does it say that online orders are for takeout only. I was kind of chastised for doing the online order and wanting to eat in. I understand the process, but if you’re going to be so strict about the rules, then either have consistency between your locations or make it very clear during the ordering process what the rules are.
The burger itself was quite good – one of the better smash burgers I’ve had. I don’t think they got my order correct, though. I ordered pickles on the side and got no pickles at all, and I paid two dollars extra to “goob” it and there was no hint of jalapeño jam or peanut butter. The fries were mediocre and the tots were basically the same thing you can buy frozen at Walmart. I certainly wouldn’t spend six dollars extra for those next time.
Not opposed to there being a next time, but given the annoyance of their process, i’m not sure I will be in a hurry for there to be a next time.

I’ve heard about Cosmo Burger since I moved back to KC. Originally we went to the one in Brookside after 10 minutes driving around looking for it we found it in a bar. Then found a place to park and finally making it in, we were pretty disappointed because, one…you have to order online, two…gotta be over 21 and we had a 19 year old. Silly rule. However we decided to go to Cosmo XR and so glad we did. The sever (Sarah?) was excellent and the burger was excellent. Although pricey for a burger fries and drink it was worth it.

The food came out quickly. The burger came out as I had asked but the sauce they say comes on the burger is actually on the side. There was a lot of black residue on the fried egg indicating the grill was not very clean. The flavor and everything about the burger was good. The fries and tots however had been recooked to the point of being overcooked and greasy. I ate the tots and about half the fries. They were fine with the sauce that was supposed to be on the burger, but definitely not a highlight. Service was very good, everyone was friendly and upbeat. Cool vibe.

Cosmo Burger XR just opened in the Crossroads and it’s already a KC favorite for me! The space has a fun retro diner vibe with a modern twist—perfect for a night out or a late-night bite.
We kicked things off with drinks: the pickle margarita (way better than it sounds—refreshing and tangy!) and the prickly pear seltzer (light and crisp).
The burgers are the star—juicy smash patties with crispy edges, melty cheese, grilled onions, and their signature burger sauce. I added lettuce, tomato, and pickles, while my friend went classic with a double and fries. Both fries and tots were perfectly crispy. Love that they also have vegan options!
We finished with the Elvis Shake (peanut butter, banana, chocolate, and bacon). I skipped the bacon but it was still so rich and delicious.
Friendly staff, creative drinks, and seriously good burgers—Cosmo Burger XR is a must-try in the Crossroads!

My wife and I went to Cosmo Burger for lunch yesterday, and we were really disappointed. The bartender was also the hostess and our server, which made everything move very slowly. It took quite a while just to get our drinks, which were okay at best.
When our food finally came, it was marginal — nothing special — and the service was below average. What really stood out was how expensive everything was. There was an extra charge for just about everything, even lettuce and tomato on our burgers. We ordered two double cheeseburgers, and the total came to $44.
For just a few dollars more, we could’ve gone somewhere much nicer and had a quality steak dinner with great service. Unfortunately, this experience wasn’t worth the price, and we won’t be going back.
