What makes it even better is the price—it’s very, very good considering the level of food and service you get. Honestly, everything about this place is just wonderful. Highly recommend!
Particularly enjoyed the mussels (very fresh and no fishy taste at all) and beef wellington (cooked perfectly) would recommend to get those. Cosy vibe which I personally think is an ideal spot for a date or gathering with friends/family. Also enjoyed the nice warm service from the team x
We booked a little late and ended up at a roadside table outside, having missed out on the garden seating—not the best start. Things picked up briefly with the oysters and prawns, which were fresh and delicious.
Then came the mains: beef Wellington and skate wing. I hadn’t had a Wellington in ages—it’s one of my absolute favourites—so expectations were high. Unfortunately, it arrived smothered in a thick, dark gravy that completely masked the meat. I couldn’t tell if it was pink inside, and the pastry was soggy. It looked more like someone had taken a paintbrush to it than plated it with any care.
As for the skate wing, it had a deep red vein along the bone, which made us question whether it was fully cooked. It was taken back to the kitchen and simply never returned. About 15–20 minutes later, the waiter came back to say the chef had confirmed it was cooked—but the plate itself never reappeared. When we asked about it, the waiter looked a bit sheepish and asked if my friend would like something else. By that point, the rest of us had already finished eating, so she declined. The only apology? They didn’t charge for the skate wing.
In hindsight, we probably should have gone to a more fish-focused restaurant and stuck with the obvious choice.
Upon entering Birdies other than a table of four the restaurant was empty, we were greated with “you are late”, we explained and made our apologies. We sat at the table and was told whats not on the menu, which restricted you as the menu itself is not very big, our host the birthday boy, opted for four fresh oysters and king prawns in garlic butter.
We selected our main courses, and my partner opted for the beef wellington, which she commented was delicious but was served with a minimum amount of potato, which amounted to one small potato, accompanied by two carrots and two small baby parsnips, that were rather over cooked and soggy.
At somepoint during our meal we was made aware that we only had the table until 8pm, this was brought to out attention when booking the table, upon ordering a second bottle of whtie wine and a large glass of red wine, we was once again reminded that we only had the table til 8pm, by the waitress with long dark hair and glasses.
On a couple of occasions we caught a couple of waitresses and a waiter called Mark looking over and gossiping, which is not only unprofessional but also intimidating, our plates were cleared very swiftly and i felt they were hovering a bit more than normal, our host at 743pm asked if we could have some irish coffes and a dessert only to be told “we did not have time”. Our host questioned it to be told by Mark that “we need the table back by 8”.
The bill was then presented in quite and abrupt many, the bill was £198, although we wouldnt have quibbled over £2 change it was not offered. Under any other circumstance i would have left a £20 tip.
When leaving we observed Mark doing a sarcastic oversized grin and discussing us with the two people waiting for our table which was only a matter of minutes. His behaviour was childish, immature and patronizing, although not a regular we have eaten here half a dozen times with no problem, but our host eats (the birthday boy) here on a regular basis, cannot express how disappointed we were with the mediocure food and the poor service. There are plenty of other places in Whitstable who serve higher end food and with a lot more professionalism.
I would like to point out that i was a hospitality manager in London for 18 years and ran a pub for 10 years. So i am fully aware of how to treat paying customers, and to be told you cannot have coffees or desserts was disappointing.
