Did you know you can ferment honey to make a wine? Yup. Honey, yeast and water fermented under an expert eye makes mead wine. I recently enjoyed my first (and definitely not my last) dining experience at the HIVE tasting room and kitchen in Woodland, CA. I enjoyed it; the food was delicious and customer service on point.

I went there with the intent of mead wine tasting but ended up not since I had driving duties. [Fun fact: mead wine has less alcohol content than grape wine.] Instead I ordered lunch and washed it down with their honey ice tea. The iced tea had a prominent honey taste. Hubs luved his, but my tastebuds were confused. Odd though because I luv honey and iced tea. We also ordered a Ruben sandwich $22 and an order of waffles. The sandwich was classic with the familiar flavors. Nice quality cut of meat, thinly shaved. The waffles $17 were topped with blueberries, slivered almonds, and orange blossom whipped ricotta cream which I asked for on the side. The ricotta cream was divine. The waffles tasted pretty darn good. However the pricing for both entrees seemed high for the serving size. But this is a type of place where folks can eat and linger to enjoy the grounds, atmosphere, and each other’s company without anyone rushing you out.

We enjoyed our meal out in the back outdoor patio. The landscaping is all organic with lots of pollinating and drought resistant plants and trees. The building is a zero energy building with an onsite brewing facility. The interior has a brand newish look and feel. There is a honey tasting and mead wine tasting counter, gift shop, and dining area. All of this is in an open floor plan. The indoor seating capacity is limited.

The place can be rented out for events (such as a garden wedding), private facility tours. Plus they host community events. Take a peek at their website. Some events are free. Events range from tours, book readings, yoga classes, flower bouquet class, gardening… etc.

First time visit to The Hive. It happened to be their anniversary party. I tasted mead for the first time. Excellent. They had tasty options for food. I went for the chicken shwarma pita. It was delicious. Such a relaxing and fun vibe for the day. Ill come back for the food, drink and to do some honey tasting for sure!!

Can’t stop raving about this place. I went with 4 friends for a tour and honey tasting, which were fun and informative. Learned all about bees and local plants and the honey business. I was impressed with the solid ethics of the generational family behind this place–especially their support for local communities (including SacLGBT center where I won this tour in a silent auction). All around good people. After the educational honey tasting (book today!) we had mead tasting flights in the beautiful patio shaded under the pergola and chatted while watching the plants sway in the breeze. Already planning our next visit. A perfect afternoon so close to Sacramento. Did I mention how spotless the kitchen was? No wonder the food tasted incredible.

They had a decent amount of options for mead and the service was great. We tasted a lot of different honey. There was lots of seating. The place was air-conditioned. My only complaint would be that a taster of four shot-size meads was over $30.

This was on my list to visit and I am glad I did finally. They have an amazing selection of mead and they taste fantastic. Pair that with food and I was happy and content. They have honey tasting as well from various locations and several flavors of honey blends and spreads. Definitely put this on your list to visit and have a great time with friends and family. They are dog friendly too and plenty of parking

I placed an order online for a 24 oz jar of blackberry honey for $28 to be delivered from Woodland CA to San Francisco CA. They charged a UPS flat rate shipping fee of $20 for this item. That’s a pretty steep price for a jar of honey, but I wanted it and it was a large jar so I figured just do it this once. For whatever reason, they shipped the honey to some random address in Los Angeles so instead of me getting it in two days, I got in four. I wasn’t expecting a full refund on the shipping, but I was expecting a partial refund as it was their fault for sending it to the completely wrong location in the first place. The manager Jason basically said they don’t guarantee any shipping time and he doesn’t see a reason why I should get any refund.

First of all, it didn’t go through the postal service it went through UPS, and the fact that there is a flat rate shipping option means that there is a window of time to expect delivery, whether they choose to admit that or not. Secondly, it’s not like I live in Nebraska, it’s the same state, so a couple days to get from Woodland to San Francisco is plenty of time.

I was buying it in Oakland at a local retailer but it sells slowly so they don’t restock it often. Looks like I’ll be giving up on this shoddy company and trying something different: I’m sure there’s more than one company out there that can deliver products to the address they are provided, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part. We’ll see.

Save your money and avoid this place.

This was our first stop after landing in SMF. Spacious patio with a garden feel. Went with the January seasonal tapas plate along with the seasonal mead tasting since this was my first time trying( there were 2 tasting options). All 4 meads were enjoyable but the earl grey one was easily my favorite. We added on the skirt steak plate which I highly recommend

I was looking for a place to eat with outdoor seating area and stumbled across this gem. Place was actually a tasting room with a surprisingly variety of food choices. I like that they have vegetarian choices as well.

My friend and I had the little gem salad, beet salad, mezzo board, grilled cheese sandwich and apple cider drink.

Little Gem Salad
The salad was a mix of radicchio and endives sprinkled with breadcrumbs. The endives were incredibly crisp with sweet/nutty flavor. It also had a pleasantly hint of bitterness. The vinaigrette took the salad up a notch perfectly balancing all the different tastes by adding a sweet, sour and savory flavor. It also helped the crumbs cling to each individual leaf rather than falling to the bottom like croutons. Croutons are so yesterday lol. It’s almost like breading for your salad. Sinfully tasty!

Grilled Cheese
Let me present to you this photo of the best grilled cheese sandwich. It hails from the Hive tasting room and it completely blew my mind. Picture two perfectly toasted slices of focaccia bread (probably dipped in butter, or at least one can hope), stuffed with melting lamb chopper, gouda cheese, dijon and caramelized onions. The sandwich is served alongside a cup of creamy tomato soup. Definitely a must try.

My friend had the beet salad. I had a taste of it and it did not disappoint. We enjoyed the mezzo board with the yummy hummus alongside the olives, veggies and bread.

Customer Service
Beatrice took our order and served us. She was amazing. We had questions about the mead tasting and she answered it thoroughly. She was super friendly and professional.

Restrooms were clean and parking was ample. Not sure where you would park if it’s crowded…maybe street parking. Restrooms were clean. Overall, love the ambiance. Lots of seating outside and makes me really comfortable to dine out with lots of room for social distancing. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place!

Came for a group brunch and really enjoyed this place!
Lots of shaded outdoor seating. Food was ordered at the front register and then they brought it out to our table. The clear winners were the charcuterie board, steak, waffles, and the cannoli. Also highly recommend the mead flights, all were tasty. Really enjoyed the Tripping Islands, and wish they made single servings to take home but it only comes in a large bottle.
We also did a honey tasting afterwards, and all the honey was really good. Favorites were the purple vetch, and the California avocado.
